Welcome Erwin-’Jimmy’-'The Rocket’/ ‘Need a New Nickname’-Hoffer

By: Christopher | July 31st, 2009

What’s the cure for nagging transfer rumors of over rated or over aged strikers joining our revolution? Erwin Hoffer of course. Duh, you mean you didn’t see it coming? De La must have just seen Jack Nicholson playing the hard knock US Teamsters union boss James R. ‘Jimmy’ Hoffa in the 1992 film ‘Hoffa,’ and immediately fell in love with the enigma. The guy mysteriously disappeared after being released from prison. Erwin is probably a subtle reincarnation of Jimmy, which explains why I’ve never heard of him, pheuph! Finally found an explanation.

Aside from his past life enamored in mob dealings Erwin has put up some stellar numbers with Rapid Wien, scoring a goal for every game he started last year! Wow take that Mr. Goalonlyeveryothergame Benzema, and what, a fifth of the price? He’s also carried over his form on the international stage making huge impressions at the U-20 tourney at Canada two years ago and then making his way on the senior team, scoring almost a goal per start last year for WC qualifying matches. Albeit he was no cheap acquisition in realistic terms, but he makes me feel a bit better after shipping away Russotto. Hopefully what Hoffer lacks in Italian heritage he will make up for with goals. Eh, guess we could have said that a lot of times for many of the players on our team. From his personality and reported playing style I feel it could be different with this lad though. Despite the crazy hair styles, Hoffer grew up in a large working class family in the suburbs of Vienna. This is the beginning of his supposed similarities to Wayne Rooney. But they don’t stop there, speed is another one as he is hailed the fastest player in Austrian football. He’s got a rough ’street style’ to his game, which I think will fit well in the league that does not sport many Austrians (sorry Garics). He’s known for slamming tackles and creating something out of nothing.
cool hair #2
last cool hair pic I promise

This guy has the strength to play at CF or as a support striker. His role for Napoli could be many, a target man in a 3-5-2, a support striker in any other formation, I say we stick him at the top of a 4-3-3 and have Cigarini boot the ball up the field on counterattacks and then watch as The Rocket’s flames engulf half of Serie A’s aged center backs. Just a thought. By the way Hoffer’s old number is the same as Cig’s new number. 21. Coincidence? I think not.

Apparently Denis is dumping his number 9 on the newcomer for number 19, in hopes of surpassing the single digits in his goal count this season. Well, there are still some unknowns in terms of formation and starting line ups, but simply because interactivity is fun, who nets more often?

WHOA!!! I read that article. What the hell happened?!?!!?!?!? One night De-La was kissing Lavezzi on that specteacular gala and the next minute, he’s blasting off with Donadoni. Again, in my opinion, I’m not a big fan of airing out your dirty laundry to everybody. Keep it inhouse. No need to say (even if your right!) for Donadoni to buy players. My guess is that Donadoni just wants depth? I could be wrong.

Alex from reading your posts you were saying how Lavezzi was making some beautiful passes. Would you think that Lavezzi would be better suited behind Quags and another striker, kind of like Totti, where he can be a ridiculous playmaker as well as a scorer? Just throwing out ideas.

Not having seen the game, I was a little surprised we didn’t put one in the back of the net..

I agree with everyone’s comments on Gargano. He is so solid and works so hard to keep possession. His passes move the ball to the right player who has the vision to get the ball to a playmaker. Its like he sees the whole field. As a commentator said about a match last year, “If you noticed, every play on goal, started with Gargano.”

lavezzi made some unreal passes last night but is far from beng able to play as trequartista. i think i exaggerated the passes because i was shocked lavezzi had it in him! with the current squad hamsik is ideal to play behind the 2 strikers. what would of been great is russotto playing behind quags and lavezzi but we all know how that ended…

ive said it a 100 times but i will say it again, the 3-5-2 isnt going to work. last night the defence played well but because the wingbacks were constantly up the pitch its always a mad scramble to get back and the midfield was overloaded, which led to a lack of sustained pressure and espanyol time to build up attacks.

the biggest reason the 3-5-2 wont work is because it doesnt suit quags or lavezzi, neither of them are target men.

the way quags and lavezzi were linking up they could play in a 4-3-2-1 i think (borriello bein the 1 hint hint! will he be a traitor if he goes to roma as he wasnt to keen on a move to naples?) but the team needs 4 at the back if donadoni doesnt see this then hes maybe not the man for us, although i wont pass judgement on him until ive seen at least 5 games, by then the team should be scoring at least 2 goals a game the quality is there.

as for de laurentiis i would be pissed off if i had just spent 50m+ and the lads played espanyolat home and drew! then you have a perfectly good left back but your manager wants more?

    what really impressed me about delas rant is this;

“Why didn’t we just bring along the youth players who have impressed in the Primavera team? Enough is enough.
I am also sick of this talk about lacking international experience. If someone is talented, he will be good at the age of 20. Who else am I supposed to sign in order to target success? You tell me.”

thats the right mentality and with the talent in campania i hope to see some young bucks sooner rather than later like ciano and giannone who are already doing well on loan.

sorry for the long post just love to babble about footy, one last thing fiorentina are apparently signing 2 new players tommorow and santacroce didnt play at all last night? coincidence? remember you heard it 1st here if he makes the trip to firenze

I’m with Alex! I agreed with a lot of what DeLa said and I think Vitale is a decent player. Also need to play 4 at the back and empty out the midfield with some chaffing off the wheat in it. We have waaay to many mids right now.

It would be nice to see Boriello and Belen in Naples soon. If he can’t get the hint with Milan signing KJH, he is blind. Plus, it’s a WC year! Come to Naples my brother, forget about Rome

Anywhere I can watch the Napoli game tomorrow? I saw this link:

Not sure how good this will be. Alex, I think you were saying something about Justin TV being good?

Now what the hell is up with Gargano?? Jesus, can’t we get to the opener without people f-in complaining? Ughhhhhhhhh

I read that Milan also signed Fabiano. Please bring Borriello back home. Hopefully he won’t want to go to Milan.

I hope Mr. Donadoni knows that if he wants to keep his job for a long time, he needs to get 4 defenders on the field.

looks like gargano is on his way out which is a huge shame. not sure if we can bring in another player of his quality in such a short space of time, although im confident zuniga can replace him.

luigi, justin tv was awful last season and a lot of the streams were truly stinking. they have changed the player or something because ive watched a couple of matches and the napoli presentation with the quality being really good. the best place for streams is definitely myp2p.eu, they have streams to hundreds of games and with napoli gaining prominence the quality of the streams will get better as well.

with the team as it is, and if lavezzi can pull out the sort of performance he did in the 1st half of that friendly, there is no reason 4th spot isnt a realistic objective. the lads have the quality my biggest concern is donadoni and the fact hes still using a 3-5-2 with 2 supporting strikers upfront…

F off Gargano. I am sick of this crap. He is a decent player in my humble opinion, but not a make or break element. We have plenty of cover in midfield with Blasi, and if we go to a four man backline which we should, we need even less.

    Forza Napoli

Gargano sounds like such an asshole. De La is absolutely right too about Gargano’s big mouth agent. It is becoming so obvious that you’re so much better off signing italian talent; people who actually have some pride in the club not just a bunch of stranieri money hunters. While I was singing his praises just a couple of days ago its not worth keeping ungrateful and uncommitted players, and apparently he has no problem admitting that. Unreal.

Napoli played well, but not great… a 0-0 scoreline was probably fair, but Quags was decisive. De Sanctis also looked really solid. Great to see the team get a road win, even if it’s a friendly.

neil good link man, cheers watched it on line with me old man who once played for napoli, thought we looked ok, hammers were fitter, of course they kick off next week and english football bit more reliant on speed and fitness anyway, el pocho looked a bit stronger, nice to see him hungry even for a pre seasone friendly, was meant to go with a mate of mine who is a hammers fan, (Same guy was gettin sick during the hammers cup final against liverpool few years back, his first cup final the fucking loser, haha) didnt materialise, anyway got drunk, liked what we did, nuthin spectacular but got the job done, anyone know why zuniga didnt get a game. maggio back is a big fuckin plus, for us and nazionale. fuck it after the crooked ferlaino years this year is gonna make me wet my fuckin pants, dunno how long long y’all been watchin napoli but this pre season has me up beat and entuisastic, never seen the likes, used to get excited about signings like freddy rincon and vidigal but thankfully we are signing a better class of baller so long darks years of shit, forza fucking napoli!!!

Thanks for the story Ciro… you’re right, Hammers looked in better physical shape, but as you pointed out they start next week in a more physical league.

Zuniga has a minor injury which kept him out today, but I don’t think it’s serious.
