Transfer Rumours and Lavezzi Update

By: Neil | April 29th, 2009

Here is a list of names that Napoli is tracking. Note that some of them are very old. Sergio Floccari, Marco Borriello, Luca Cigarini, Cristian Ledesma, Roberto Acquafresca, Edgar Barreto, Nikola Kalinic, and Daniele Galloppa. Napoli players tracked by other clubs include the two usual suspects, Lavezzi and Hamsik, plus Matteo Contini. Who is following Contini? Answer after the jump.

Contini is being scouted by Roma, as potential cover for Phillipe Mexes. Given that Contini is not a complete defender, and has had consistency problems this season, I wouldn’t mind seeing him go to Roma. He’s 30 years old, so hopefully we can still get a good chunk of cash for him.

The Floccari deal, according to President De Laurentiis, is off. DeLa claims that the player doesn’t want Napoli, and this could mean a couple of things. First, Napoli isn’t his first choice. Floccari had admitted he wants to join Genoa, presumably to fill in for Diego Milito if he leaves. Second, DeLa won’t pay for players who view playing for Napoli as a consolation prize. I like this kind of bargaining. Why pay top dollar for players who are only at Napoli because their other plans never materialized? Napoli are also looking at midfieldeer Luca Cigarini. Defender Gyorgy Garics could be used as a part exchange, similar to the alleged Floccari deal.

With Floccari out of the picture – for now, at least – Napoli are looking at other strikers including Roberto Acquafresca and Hajduk Split’s Ivan Kalinic. I would love to get Acquafresca. He’s a quick player with a good shot, and could probably play any number of attacking roles. However, Inter is his probable destination for next season. The Nerazzurri have already said they will be recalling him from his loan at Cagliari, and it will take a lot of negotiating between Napoli, Cagliari, and Inter to change that.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has called the 21 year old Kalinic the future of Croatian football. Napoli has been following him since last summer, but instead of Kalinic the club signed German Denis. Kalinic has scored a ton at every level for both club and country – he has lots of experience in the Croatia youth setup – and apparently a number of European clubs, including Palermo, have been scouting him.

The Borriello story is old, so I won’t repeat anything just now. The Galloppa rumours are old too, but with Napoli in Siena this weekend the story was bound to come up again.

Napoli is also after Lazio’s Cristian Ledesma. Going the other way in part exchange would be Mariano Bogliacino. The last couple of seasons Bogliacino has mostly been used as a backup for Hamsik, and he has struggled this season after suffering a major injury in the Intertoto Cup in July. Even though I like his style of play, he’s very expendable and probably needs a fresh start somewhere else. I haven’t watched Lazio as much as other Serie A teams, so I don’t know too much about Ledesma. The former Boca Juniors player has been in Italy since 2001 and has lots of Serie A experience.

Another new rumour is Reggina’s Paraguayan midfielder Edgar Barreto. The former teammate of Napoli’s Salvatore Aronica will almost certainly be sold if Reggina is relegated, and many clubs are lining up to get him at a cut price deal. Barreto has a silver medal as he was a member of the 2004 Paraguay Olympic team that lost the gold medal match to Argentina.

As usual there is the ongoing soap opera involving Lavezzi and Hamsik. Lavezzi strained a thigh muscle in the Inter game and should probably be shut down for the rest of the season. He’ll miss at least two to three weeks, giving other fowards a chance to show their quality. There are also the usual reports that he is unsettled in Napoli, and that he wants to play in Spain’s La Liga.

Hamsik is also a player in demand. From the feedback in the comments, many fans wouldn’t mind selling Hamsik to free up some money for other players. I have to respectfully disagree. Hamsik won the best young player in Italy award last year, and I don’t think those kinds of players should be sold. If someone offered stupid money, I would say take it, but since Hamsik’s form has declined this year I don’t think anyone is going to do that. Yes, he’s going through a rough moment, but form is temporary and class is permanent.

That’s all for now. Next up is a Siena preview, and although it’s meaningless as far as the standings go I’m hoping Napoli can end their winless streak on the road now that it’s been done at home.

The same old rumours huh. Don’t want Ledesma, don’t want Baretto, maybe on Kalinic. It’s seems a lot of Italian players say how great it would be to play for Napoli, etcc etcc. but when it comes time to put their money where their mouth is, they don’t want to come. What do they want to do, sit on the bench or be in a “rotation” policy at Juve, Milan, or Inter? Out of those teams, Juve are the only ones that actually look for Italian players. The other two are Brazilians and Argies.

We’ll have to see what kind of players we actually get, but it’s all about posturing now anyways.

Neil– have to disagree about Hamsik- sell him. I don’t think his heart is at Napul anymore.

Just saw a “report” from Goal.com that Lavezzi feels like a prisoner in his own home because Napoli fans “besiege” him. I never know what to think of the goal.com articles but is there any truth to this? It would actually hurt to think Lavezzi doesn’t want to be there anymore.

I can’t believe the comments that are now coming out of lavezzi’s mouth. So now as it stands both lavezzi and hamsik want to switch teams, thats great our 2 best players. I was afraid of this. As this team is right now with out our 2 young talents we are no more than a team that would fight to not relegate to serie B next year. I cant believe that he is acting like this because the fans are showing to mch affection. I dont understand why a team like Napoli as important as it is and as large as our fan base is(3rd or 4th largest in italy) can not keep their star players, its like napoli is nothing but a stepping stone to these players. Maybe they are to young to remember how great it was to play for Napoli in the late 80’s and that is what De Laurentis is trying to establish again, but if every time we find a good player they leave and no big name players want to come its never going to happen. Its like we discover and grow the young talents just 4 other teams 2 come around and snatch them up right when they are about to explode. This is making me sick 2 my stomache players should be proud to play for Napoli not use it as a stepping stone. Dela might have 2 step up and pay the better players what they are worth. I’m tired of hearing that he doesn’t want to upset the other players in the locker room. If you are better than u get paid better, its simple.

a big NO to ledesma. if he was any good there would be other clubs interested in him.

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=34070

read what russotto has said in that interview. hes honoured to wear the shirt of one of the most important teams in the world, and he wants to stay at napoli for a long time. thats why i want young italians they understand the importance of this club. stranieri only know the club as where maradona played

players like floccari and d’agostino want to go to the inters and the juves because they are heading towards the end of their careers and want to win something/play champions league which is understandable.

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=34067

if lavezzi wants to go sell him same as hamsik. i would rather see russotto get his place. get around 40-50m (or cash plus players) for them and reinvest it into some young italian talent that will actually play for the shirt and more importantly the city and fans.

“heading towards the end of their careers”

makes them sound ancient! i mean that at that age, a footballer wants to go to the club thats most likely to win something, or play in the champions league

    this is from gaetano fedele fabio cannavaros agent;

“Napoli never made an offer. There was never any interest. Fabio would have been willing to make enormous economic sacrifices to once again wear the Azzurri jersey. Would he have accepted a contract of just a £1m a year? Let’s just say, for Napoli, Fabio would have made extraordinary sacrifices,”

why is it only de laurentiis who thought signing him was a bad idea?

I’m going to throw out a name and see what you guys think? Carlos Tevez from Man U. He recently stated that he wanted out. I know DeLa said that he wanted more Italians to play but if they Italians that we want prefer to go to Juve, Inter, etc then why bother? Even if we can get him on loan I think it might make a great combo with Lavezzi. Just a thought.

hes worth about 30m and his wages would be insane. having watched him in the premier league hes quality but not a target man.
its not that any italians wont join, its the fact napoli has to focus on the younger ones with high potential. players like cigarini would join if they like the project. acquafrescas agent has said he would join, then you have players like criscito and nocerino who say they definitely want to play for napoli. it really is down to marino, he could of bought bocchetti and cigarini last summer but for some stupid reason didnt.
if genoa, sampdoria and palermo can put together competitive teams full of italians there is no reason napoli cant

Tevez would be a really awesome player to get, but the transfer fee would be huge, plus his wages. That is the kind of straniero who would be worth it, not the scrubs we usually get.

And still, not wanting Cannavaro is just mind blowing to me. Just work out a freakin’ deal, for pete’s sake!!!

Hopefully we can get the 3 big points on the road this weekend. When’s the last time we did that?

make a concrete offer marino! no clubs seem interested in him hes young and absolutely amazing at passing. exactly what the team needs. just think where this team would be if marino had bought him last summer.
if they end up buying ledesma i would be pissed another argie plus hes laziale.
the only defender i would be truly happy with seeing as though there is no chance of f.cannavaro, is criscito. the way he plays, he could be fabios heir on the national team and an absolute neapolitan legend

they already have robino and craig bellamy so not really sure where he would fit in.
seriously though if hes unhappy then he should go. same as any player. if they offered 25m+ then de laurentiis should at least think about it. if they ended up paying 30m+ then imagine the sort of player napoli could bid for. cassano would be the top of that list

I like Lavezzi and would like to pair him up with a genuine target man. Saying that, if Man City offered us crazy loot for him, I would sell him. I hate selling our best players, but money talks. Plus, we are mid table with him, and if he’s unhappy, we could build a nice squad with the dough

    this is from cigarinis agent;

“Cigarini likes Napoli, right now there is no concrete offer, but in the past Napoli has tried to acquire him,” revealed the player’s representative, Giovanni Bia, to Radio Kiss Kiss.”

    this is from de laurentiis;

“Hamsik and Lavezzi are not on the market and I would like to reiterate that. However, if there is a crazy offer which would be hard to refuse and allow us to buy several other players…
Floccari will not come here. I think he has gone to Genoa. I have seen that Italian players have a problem coming to Napoli. It happened with Bianchi, and now it has happened again,”

rolando bianchi is shit so his point about him is moot. floccari is nearly 28 and wants to play in europe. if it was the other way round and napoli was going to qualify for europe im sure that he would join. young italians would love the chance to play for napoli. the older players like d’agostino and floccari want to play in europe which is understandable.
de lauentiis and marino better not use this as an excuse to sign more overpriced, overrated, unproven stranieri!
if floccari goes to genoa then good, milito will join inter and that means acquafresca will probably leave. i would prefer him anyway

de laurentiis wants a defender, midfielder and striker so far criscito, cigarini and acquafresca, or their agents, have hinted they would like to play for napoli. those 3 would probably be cheaper and easier to get than the more established players. i can almost guarantee marino will sign jodlewic, ledesma and kalinic. the transfer policies of marino are absolutely shite

Seems that way. I see the point in that some of the Italian players want to play in the CL, but I have seen to many go to Inter, Milan, Juve, Roma and end up in a rotation policy or sitting on the bench.

Look at Juve, they have great young players like Giovinco, Marchisio, De Ceglie, and yet they are still trying to bring in big named stranieri. Back to the bench for Gio and company.

Come to Napoli, get a starting place evey week, and work Napoli into the CL! Could you imagine a CL night at the San Paolo???

Alex, DeLa is referring to Ottavio Bianchi who coached the Maradona led teams of the late 1980’s. Even when Napoli was the best team in Serie A, Bianchi still had problems getting some players to come to Napoli. That is what DeLa is talking about.

“Floccari will not come here. I think he has gone to Genoa. I have seen that Italian players have a problem coming to Napoli. It happened with [Rolando] Bianchi, and now it has happened again,”

its from goal.com so they probably screwed up the translation, wouldnt suprise me. if it was a newspaper it would be the worst tabloid of the lot they just make things up.

its not suprising the older players want to go to clubs that are in europe and are more likely to win something, thats why napoli has to focus on the younger italians who just want to play for a big club.

whats interested me is with all the transfer speculation regarding hamsik and lavezzi, neither of them have publicly stated they want to stay at the club. even hamsiks agent has come out and said he will be reviewing things when he visits italy. the only person whos desperate for them to stay is dela.

on the flipside you have russotto a 20 year old roman who hardly gets a decent run out stating that hes honoured to wear the shirt and wants to stay for a long time. thats a potential club symbol, not lavezzi saying he feels like hes in a prison.

at the start of the season i would be furious at even the thought of selling either of them but if you can get 20-25m for marek plus players and 30m for lavezzi i say good riddance a dip in form is understandable for any player but they both have been terrible the second half of the season, especially with hamsik

Agreed alex. I would love to see Russotto to get the start at Siena. With that said, losing Lavezzi means losing essentially anything good with our front line. If anything, I think we need Lavezzi + a true finisher; Denis and Zalayeta are woefully inadequate in my opinion.

Out of Hamsik or Lavezzi, I would sell Hamsik. Really want to keep Lavezzi, but money talks.

Lavezzi upfront with a Boriello/Floccari/Iaquinta type target man would be so sweeeet
