The Reja Era Comes To An End
By: Neil | February 15th, 2009Napoli 1 Bologna 1
It’s not a question of if, but a question of when Reja will be dismissed. I’ve been watching sports long enough to know when a team is trying to get their manager fired, and Napoli’s performance against Bologna on Saturday certainly fits that description. To say that Reja has “lost the dressing room” is misleading because I think the players respect him as a man. But Reja clearly doesn’t have enough skill to lead this team, and the players need someone who can bring them to the next level. As a Napoli fan this is a frustrating time because situations like this can drag on with the team picking up mediocre results until a change is finally made.
Here are the highlights from Saturday’s game:
There’s something really disturbing about the way Bologna equalized almost immediately after Napoli took the lead. It’s not like Bologna put us under all kinds of pressure to get the goal back. We basically handed them a goal with mistakes by Rinaudo and Navarro. When a team makes a series of blunders like that after taking the lead, it’s a sign they’re not all that interested in winning.
But there’s more evidence that Reja is on his way out. Here are some wonderful postgame quotes from Matteo Contini:
“We have decided to go straight into ritiro (training camp), so that we can stay together and go over our mistakes and prepare the match against Genoa as best as we can.
“This was our decision and not a punishment inflicted by the club. Unfortunately, our physical condition and a bit of bad luck are preventing us from winning games.”
“This is not the coach’s fault,” continued Contini.
You can read the entire article here but I want to go over some of the lines and what they really mean.
We have decided to go into ritorno (training camp)
What it really means: We want a brand new start on things.
This was our decision and not a punishment inflicted by the club
What it really means: We can make our own decisions and we don’t need Reja’s guidance
This is not the coach’s fault
What it really means: This is the coach’s fault.
I wish I could compliment all the teams that have picked up good results against Napoli recently: Roma, Udinese, Palermo, and now Bologna. But the truth is that Napoli has been their own worst enemy those games. In two of those games, Roma and Palermo, we gave them the game in the opening half. In the games we drew against Udinese and Bologna, we just didn’t show any desire in the second half to win the game. In the Bologna game in particular the Napoli players had a lot more space to exploit than the other games. I’m not suggesting that Napoli has been throwing games – that’s unprofessional – but if you want a new manager then winning games or picking up good results will just ensure that the old manager stays. I’ve played on a couple of teams where the team really wanted a new manager, and at that point you stop caring whether you win or lose.
The Bologna game was the new low point of the season. The previous low point was just last week after we didn’t show up for the first 15 minutes. There’s definitely something going on, and I wouldn’t use the word ’slump’ or ‘crisis’ because once a new manager is in place the rough period will quickly disappear.
Reja is not helping himself either. In his postgame comments he said “I don’t know any other way to work.” In other words, his approach is not going to change. He actually believes once the side picks up a win, the old Napoli will return. I kind of feel bad for him. He’s doing his best and staying optimistic but he’s simply out of his league managing what should be a European level Serie A team.
I was hoping Reja could finish out the season as he has done so much for SSC Napoli in his last 4+ years. But calcio, especially at the Serie A level, is a cruel business sometimes. Let’s hope the change is made sooner rather than later.

very good article! same situation at boro, southgate has just run out of ideas but we have no one to replace him with. ive given up hope of staying in the premier league unless we win the next game and as for napoli ive given up on europe next season. my biggest worry is that if we dont qualify for europa cup then will we be able to attract quality players? will de laurentiis want to pump more money in the team?
if we get people like conte, cigarini and iaquinta in, then that would give us league experience and in conte we would have a manger that would be able to connect with the players as he was a excellent player and legend. and he would get the players pumped unlike reja. biggest problem with reja is he cant change his tactics and whats the point in attacking down the wings without a quality striker. iaquinta would be perfect for this team. i am almost positive with how poor secco is we could get iaquinta and criscito in exchange for hamsik and that would be amazing for us. what i really want is fabio cannavaro to come back but if we dont get into europe then there is no chance of that. we really need a leader paolo has done well but we need someone experienced. and why the fuck does reja not play santacroce our best defender and give russotto a chance?!!!

Was it me or was Santacroce not playing? Man that was some horrible soccer being played yesterday. I hope Navarro goes as well. It seems that ever since Iezzo went down Napoli has not been the same team. Very frustrating.

all those players can be bought but we will end up trying to find the next lavezzi

Santacroce didn’t play. He lost his starting job a long time ago. Why, I have no idea.
Iezzo has been out for a while. Both Navarro and Gianello have been disappointing this year, but I hope Navarro stays because with the right coaching he’s still valuable.

Reja has no ryhme or reason to his decisions anymore? Why not play Santacroce? Why take off P. Cannavaro when Rinaudo was worse and just sucked up the joint? Why keep playing 3 at the back?
I do hold the players somewhat responsible as well. Like Neil said, they aren’t exactly helping out with the attitude.
We just don’t have the players Inter, Milan, Juve, Roma , etc have .
I still think selling Hamsik is key to get enough funds to strenghten the squad. I agree with Alex

we need a new manager with a modern mentality i dont understand why italians are so against playing young players? if a player is good enough then they should be used. pato is the best example of this. im afraid that without uefa cup next season and how reja has monumentally fucked up this team, players like santacroce and russotto will want to leave when they could have become the future of the team. lavezzi should be rested as he is clearly burnt out and he doesnt score enough and maybe he would if he wasnt ran into the ground every game. i hope that we lose against genoa and reja gets the sack because im sick of him and his fucking 3 at the back and wing play when we dont have any out and out strikers to get the ball to. and we desperately need a midfielder that can create something in the middles. how did datolo play the other day as well?

Datolo played well..we didn’t see any of his trademark free kicks though, most of them went straight to the keeper. Russotto didn’t get many chances with the ball although he was wide open a number of times. Right now the offense solely concentrates on Maggio’s runs up the left flank and Lavezzi trying to dribble through the entire defense. Our midfielders can not keep the pace for the entire 90 min as they are forcd to constantly help the 3 man back line as is evident with Gargano’s horrible passes. The team deseratley needs a new manager with a new way of looking at the game.

Rather than Conte (who is Pugliese, bitches, hands off) you should go for another Juve legend, Ferrara. He’s splitting time between the Juve youth team and helping Lippi with the Nazionale, but I think a full-time coaches position at Napoli could change his mind.

thats who ive got my heart set on ciro would be my first choice but nothing has been mentioned about it apart from a while ago. i hope we can bring him in and that would surely make us attractive to italian players because of how much a legend he was for us as well. i want us emulate roma on bringing in some quality local lads from the youth teams as well there are so many players we could have playing for us if we hadnt of gone through hell in the late 90’s. players like borriello, quagliarella and nocerino would have played for us i think instead of going elsewhere
