The Outlook of A New Project
By: Neil | October 12th, 2009When a football team’s dictator – wait, that should read owner – fires the director of sport on live TV, says he’s going to fire the manger and does so a week later, you can call it the end of a project. The first cycle of Napoli’s renaissance has officially come to an end shortly into its 6th season. There’s two ways of looking at the last 5+ years. You can say that the team climbed from Serie C1 into a UEFA Cup place, and it was a huge success. But then there’s the question: if it was so successful, why did the owner need to replace the entire management team? I think in the day to day world of professional calcio, the direction a team is going is always more important than past achievements. And in that light, a new project was absolutely necessary.
It’s difficult to anaylze where the new project is going. First, the management team isn’t completely in place yet. Second, new d.s. Riccardo Bigon is a lawyer with little or no history in calcio. Yes, his father Alberto Bigon lead Napoli to a scudetto in the Maradona era. But that’s no guarantee that his son is going to follow in his footsteps. Just like Donadoni, Bigon could be a raccomandato – a person who gets awarded positions because of his name rather than his experience. It also remains to be seen who gets to work with Bigon as technical director. I’m hoping that De Laurentiis brings in an experienced football man, someone who can identify talent and value players according to their market worth.
One of the certainties – for the short term at least – is new manager Walter Mazzarri. The ex Reggina and Samp manager has a repuatation as a good motivator, something that Donadoni was missing in his brief stint as Napoli manager.

Mazzarri has already spoken of the emotion needed to succeed in calcio.
“I want to see everyone celebrate good news and everyone suffer when it’s time to grit our teeth. That is the only way to build a team. And if we lose, it is only me who is to blame.”
This kind of thinking was completely absent from Donadoni’s analysis of the team and its problems. Of course, bringing a more emotional atmosphere to the dressing room and pitch isn’t the only requirement for long term success. The team was united and in good spirits under Reja for the first season and a third in Serie A, but all that vanished as other teams adapted on field to Napoli’s approach.
Mazzarri knows there is more to do than to boost morale, and reports indicate he’ll use a 3-4-3 system similar to the one Gasperini has in place at Genoa. In the most notable adjustment, Hamsik will be moved up to the forward line to play with Quags and Lavezzi.
Possible Napoli lineup:
De Sanctis
Campagnaro – Cannavaro – Contini
Maggio – Gargano – Cigarini – Aronica
Lavezzi – Quagliarella – Hamsik
But Mazzarri knows there’s a lot more to a tactical system than simply putting it in place. Again, that was an area which Donadoni neglected. Once he settled on the 3-5-2, he made few adjustments with both personnel and the duties of each position. Mazzarri’s new approach is fresh and should be entertaining to watch:
“It is not a tactical system that makes the difference, but rather how you apply it. I want the lads to play with a fast tempo, intensity and the right timing
From a personnel standpoint, there are rumours that Napoli is going to upgrade the left side of the field in the January mercato. The ususal names have come up – De Ceglie and Molinaro – but this time there’s a difference: the team has a manager who knows the type of player he wants in each position. For every new player that Mazzarri gets, I have the impression that he’s going to integrate them into the team according to their strengths. In terms of the on field performance, the short term looks very good. Mazzarri has a clear vision of what he wants to see, and he has a deep squad to make use of. I’m predicting that Napoli’s results will start to improve immediately.
For the long term it depends on how well the team of DeLa, Bigon, and the technical director can work together. De Laurentiis, after seeing millions of dollars get wasted on risky transfers, has spoken about upgrading the youth infrastructure. If you look at many successful teams in Europe – Man United, Barcelona, Arsenal and others – they’ve done a great job of bringing in good young players that came up through the academy and didn’t cost a fortune. I’d rather see the President invest a bit of money in the youth sector instead of spending big money buying established players who might not be a good fit for the starting eleven.
For the goal of playing consistently in Europe, it will take at least one more year of making adjustments before we can qualify. In my humble opinion there’s been too much instability this season to mount a serious run at a Europa league place. If Mazzarri works his magic Napoli might come close, but even for that to happen most of the roster will have to rediscover their top form. The good news is that there’s still lots of time, and if the new management team acts smartly in the January window it could be an exciting second half of the season for Napoli fans.
Until then, it’s one week at a time starting with Bologna at home. Let’s hope the team can show improvements and the Mazzarri era – and the new cycle – can begin with a triumphant win. Forza Napoli!

alex has a good point. if Mazzarri was able to tame and control Cassano into Italy’s finest player, I have high hopes for the likes of Lavezzi, Santacroce, Cigarini, and Hamsik.

I am really hpong to see some better play this weekend. And team spirit also. That seemed to visibly drain with each game. I still don’t like a 3 man backline, but will give the new manager some time to work his magic.
Sick of the Lavezzi and Gargano attitudes
And I also like investing in the youth system

what i really want to see is quags scoring some super goals! lavezzi really has to improve his teamwork i think and the team should be constantly setting each other up instead of taking 3 players on at once.
although the stuff about the primavera is very positive i hope dela realises what the team needs more than anything is experience and a real leader.
any idea of how ciano, cosmo palumbo, mario d’urso and luca giannone are doing on loan??

EXACTLY!!!! There is no leader on this team. Somebody must emerge. Lavezzi is too immature, Hamsik could potentially be one, but I don’t think he is there yet. I’d like to see Quags do it, but I don’t think he is there yet.
Now there are reports that Zuniga will get sent to Juve for molinaro. Now as I read the article is says that he can play left back>? Is that true? Aren’t we missing a left back?

so frustrating that fabio could of been signed for free and enzo maresca went to olympiacos for 3-5m or something stupid.

Molinaro does play LB Luigi, the question that remains is how well can he do it haha. However, watching Juve play a lot, the comforting fact is that he is one of those tireless defenders. Last season he played an absolutely obscene amount of consecutive minutes running up and down the flank. But if that exchange did happen you’d have to think we got shafted a bit on that 8 mill price tag for Zuniga… Molinaro isn’t worth that.

Dear friends,
Rather than buying and selling players already, I would see how we do with the new coach. We have already used rivers of ink to tell that our team definitively needs some reinforcements if we have high expectations. However, I would observe a few games to understand how far we can go with the current players and then I would express my opinion. Anyway, this guy (Mazzarri) seems to have the right credential to motivate the team. Time will tell….Posted from

Agreed Gennaro. Zuniga wasn’t used to effect by Donadoni. Let’s see what influence Mazzarri can have on the underperforming players. Already the players are speaking postively and hopefully this will be shown on the pitch against Bologna.

Let’s see what Zuniga can do with a new coach. Molinaro is average at best. I am hoping for a much more positive performance this weekend and some team spirit. Hopefully the fans will get behind the team as well.

renovating the san paolo and sorting the primavera out dela your spoiling us! 2 things that have really impressed me and are fundamental to the future of the club.
still not so sure about a 38 year old lawyer as the sporting director. surely he will have someone working alongside him? with all the wheeling and dealing related to football transfers you need someone who knows the business or people will take the piss!
as for molinaro hes literally cant cross in a decent ball to save his life. juventus can have zuniga in exchange for paolo de ceglie or half the rights of criscito!
“Playing for the Azzurri would be the top for me, since I was born in Naples and I have always supported the Partenopei.”
fuck juventus and genoa if napoli pay the money criscito would join

Quagliarella started against Cyprus, and De Sanctis made the bench. Currently 1-0 Cyrpus.

Wow… 2-0 Cyprus. You’d think Italy’s backups would do a little better even if the game means nothing.

shit just seen quags has scored the winner, was going to tune in but the england match is on! was it any good?

ok thats a bit strange, sky score centre just changed the scorer to gilardino??

I didn’t see it but apparently it was Quagliarella’s shot that took a light touch from Gila.

Literally as the ball was about to fully cross the line Gilardino got a toe on it. He was being safe as a defender was coming in but it was really Quagliarella’s goal.

New stadium would be very nice indeed. Just give the 3rd Italy goal to Gila and give him his hatrick.

Wow….that is all I can say.

De Laurentiis recently said that Cassano will remain a dream… unless Napoli qualifies for Europe I don’t think Dela wants to pay his salary

i was just about to post the same article luigi. i think we all agree cassano would be perfect for napoli. i dont see any reason why if hamsik or lavezzi were to leave dela couldnt make a bid.
quags cost 18m and as much as i love him cassano is on a different planet.
im ecstatic that dela has chosen to renovate the san paolo instead of moving, any ideas of how he will do it?
ive said it a couple of times, it would be quality if the second tier ran down towards the pitch. just imagine a sea of napoli tifosi going wild right next to the pitch

With all these articels talking about Lavezzi leaving, let’s sell him, while he is still high. Use the money on Cassano. I mean I now that we still are in DIRE need of defenders, but one can dream.
I am very curious to see how Napoli plays on sunday.
Anybody have any insider information on how the next sporting director will be???

Lavezzi lost his passport and might not make it back for the match on sunday? Awesome.

“We are tired of having to deal with these Argentines who are not paying attention, and who are less than professional,”
haha dela is wild! i guess we wont be signing argentines any time soon. id had enough of lavezzi in the summer now i cant be bothered with him anymore. hes had plenty of chances and still hes just wasted his talent
Posted from

Amen to that. Are you that fucking stupid that you lost your passport? And then you have the BALLS to ask for a raise?!?!?!? Imagine if DeLa had given him a raise and this occured? Careless. DeLa should let him know, through the papers how he feels. Good for him.

no wonder young italians are moving away from serie a, you had russotto clearly a talented young player that showed he had the skill and the right attitude to succeed but he wasnt bought because we have lavezzi. even if dela wants to sell him who would buy him?
