The “know your enemy” post – Intertoto version
By: Joe | July 15th, 2008Napoli begin their first European adventure since the 1994-95 campaign. A full 13 years have gone by since Napoli played in Europe. It’s no wonder President Aurelio De Laurentis was anxious to get Napoli some continental competition. We’re not too proud to get into the EUFA Cup via the Intertoto.
Facing the partenopei will be the Greek side Panionios. While the Athenian side have never won the Greek Super League, they finished 5th last year and posted an impressive 8-3-4 record in the league at their 11,700 home stadium. The first match of the two-legged tie will be played in Athens on Sunday, July 20 and the return leg will either be played at the San Paolo the following Saturday or Sunday. Can you imagine the first European night at the San Paolo in 14 years? On a Saturday night? Napoletanos don’t need a reason to get crazy…but that would sure be one.
Panionios’ leading goal scorer from last year, Frenchman Rafik Djebbour (14 goals – 4th) normally plays in front of the two attackers in coach Ewald Lienin’s 4-3-1-2. Italian fans may remember striker Lampras Choutos from his brief time with Roma and Inter. He actually only played for Inter in one match and was loaned Atalanta, Reggina and Mallorca. In the summer of 2004, Choutos signed a 3-year deal with Inter but never found his place and wouldn’t until he returned to his home country last season. The former Olympiakos striker shrugged off a series of injuries to bag 10 goals last season and his two goals against OFK Belgrade in the Intertoto 2nd round sent Panionios through to this stage of the EUFA Cup.
24-year old Croatian Dario Krešić minds the nets for the Athens side and he took his lumps last year. Krešić appeared in 26 matches last year and his defense allowed a 5th worst 42 goals (Superleague has 16 teams). In the midfield, Panionios just signed young Ghanian Bennard Yao Kumordzi. The attacking midfielder was coveted by Bayern Leverkusen and was voted as the first half MVP of the Greek Superleague last year where he played for Egaleo. Anything else I have to say about Panionios would be complete fabrication. So that’s all I got. A score draw (road goals rule is in effect) would be a fantastic result for Napoli.
Meanwhile, Napoli hasn’t had the greatest run up to this Intertoto tie. They lost 1-0 against Hajduk Split (Hamsik missed a PK) and drew Hungarian 2nd division Uebelbach 1st division side Zalaegerszeg 1-1 today. Zalaegerszeg finished 7th last year in Hungaria’s top flight. Inacio Pia has played well in both matches and has a legitimate shot to actually stick with the team this year. We’ll see.

Good luck to Napoli. I really like what they have done in the offseason. Perhaps they could use another big time forward to guarantee more goals.

Don’t underestimate Ewald Lienen. I’ve seen what he can do to a mediocre team at 1.FC Köln…
But I wish you the best of luck. Forza Mezzogiorno!

There’s the eternal rumor that we’re signing the Italy U-21er Russotto. I really hope this is true as I believe he will develop into a strong player. Wish I was back in Napule this summer for all the game.

Didn’t he play for lazio a while back? Great news Joe G! Keep up the good work.
So does your employer know you research Calcio from work or is it all done at home?Posted from

He did come up through Lazio’s youth system. Deal is confirmed. I can’t believe we picked up Russotto. Simply blows me away. I love Marino!

Looks like they have him on a loan deal with an option to purchase him later on. Russotto is with Casiraghi’s Azzurrini preparing for the Beijing Olympics and won’t be with Napoli until after the tournament. So Marino picked him up without knowing whether or not we’re going to advance in the UEFA Cup. Pretty ballsy if you ask me. Not that I’m against it at all, it’s just interesting that he was picked up without knowing for sure if we’re going to keep playing in Europe this year.
He plays a trequartista role but I wonder if they’re going to play him off on the far left since it looks like Mirko Savini may be on his way out. Wow, just wow.

According to the Channel 4 website, the 1-1 draw was with Hungarian 1st division Zalaegerszeg. In any case, pre season results don’t matter. Teams aren’t even trying to win games, they’re looking to improve technically and tactically. I don’t think pre season wins build morale either. A victory against Panionios will offset any 1-1 draws or 1-0 losses.

Sounds great. Time to make a run at Europe.
Since they announced last week that the SCup (inter-roma) will be played on American soil. I think we need to get a group together and all show up in are Napoli jerseys. Represent are pride. I am probably going just to support the serie A. I am gunna need a few more people to come if I am to wear my NAPOLI jersey. I don’t need to run into a bunch of roma ultras from Italy. Cause I know I won’t be able to shut my mouth. Anyways just a idea!

Napoli need three new players.

Fernando Tissone(central midfielder)
Paolo De Ceglie(left back)Posted from

Thanks, Neil. I made the update. See what happens when you post after a few Scotch ales? Thanks for the heads up, Neil.
Would love to come to NY, Joseph C, but it just won’t happen. My vacation days are all booked up. I do wear my red Napoli jersey for all Chicago Fire matches (I grew up near where they play) and take any opportunity I can get to play up our side.

Getting in the Uefa cup via Intertoto your first year after promotion is nothing to be ashamed of, Joe!

Wow, that became official a lot faster than I anticipated. That’s huge news about Russotto. Here’s a little background for some. Not very detailed, but it does touch on the agent problems, which is another reason why so many root for this kid.

So Russotto refused to sign for a big agency… I like that kind of character.

CapoCorso:
I don’t believe RAI International has any rights to EUFA Cup/Champions League. I believe it’s on Sky Sports in Italy but there’ll be nothing on TV. I’m hoping we can listen to it via radio stream on http://www.radiomarte.it.Posted from

hey guys check it out i finally found out where we can follow the game, after some hard core researching. it will be shown on sunday at noon on myP2P.eu. I looked it up and they are definately showing the game via internet on that web-site. if you go on the website and go under the search tab and type in football, the uefa cup, napoli, 20-7-2008 it will give you all of the info you need. If you are not a member i suggest that you go to the website asap and register yourself. you are going to have to download a few simple programs in order to view the game. but the best part of it all is that it is free. good luck and FORZA RAGAZZI FORZA NAPOLI vogliamo l’europa. remember myP2P.eu

Just a word of caution to go with Eric’s tip, it looks like they’re only expecting one stream as of now, so it’s not a guarantee that we’ll be able to watch. Sometimes streams are poor quality or cut out. Fingers crossed, though, I’d like to see the match!
Also, for anyone unfamiliar with MyP2P, you don’t have to register with the site to get the streams. There will be links to the stream/s on the day. You can get their upcoming schedule by clicking on “Live Sports” at the top of the main page, and then picking the sport you’re interested in. If you’re totally new to streaming, download a couple of the more common programs BEFORE Sunday and try them out with other games. The last thing you want is for kickoff to roll around Sunday and still be fiddling with the software. (Install is usually simple, but sometimes getting the programs to play nicely with firewall/security settings takes some trial and error.)
