The Joy of Football
By: Neil | March 23rd, 2009Napoli 0 Milan 0
It wasn’t the best-played game I’ve ever seen, but there was a certain joy in watching Napoli return to form after nearly four months of mediocre to downright ugly games. Milan threatened several times but never really created a great scoring chance and Navarro’s best save might have been tipping a Beckham cross away from danger. Napoli’s team defence was outstanding and they contained a Milan team that had scored eight goals in its two previous games. With all due respect to Maldini, man of the match had to be Daniele Mannini, who returned to action following more than two months off for a questionable suspension. Mannini played with the enthusiasm of someone who rediscovered the meaning of football after being exiled. It’s watching competitors like him and Maldini that make the game fun for the spectator.
It was great to see a vintage Maldini in what might be his last game at the San Paolo. His technique was perfect as usual and watching him chase down Lavezzi was priceless. I was hoping Milan would win the UEFA Cup this year so Maldini would go out winning one last title, but now I’m hoping he’ll play another year so his final season can be better than the current one. Either way I don’t think we’ll see a player like him again.
Here are the highlights:
Also, props to DeLa for coming down to the bench and making himself one of the boys. I think the players all respect him because of his character, not just because he writes their paychecks. After the gamed DeLa addressed rumours of Borriello coming to Napoli by saying he will listen to Donadoni before making any moves in the summer market.
This week I’m going to do a rundown of every Napoli player, followed by their pagella:
Nico Navarro – Yesterday we saw the good Navarro. He was alert but calm, and showed great technique. If you were scouting Navarro yesterday, you would have seen why Napoli paid a lot of money to make him the keeper of the future. I have a feeling he was one of those players that Reja, for whatever reason, could not get the best out of. Let’s hope he develops some consistency and plays at this level week in week out. (6.5)
Fabiano Santacroce – Another reliable display. Looked a little uneasy early on, but got more comfortable as the match progressed. What makes a great defender is getting the job done when you’re not at your best, and Santacroce was effective yesterday even though he wasn’t as dominant as other games. Napoli’s best overall defender. (6.5)
Paolo Cannavaro – A solid 90 minutes from our captain. Didn’t do anything spectacular, but he still reinforced his value to the team. I just can’t imagine this side without Cannavaro in the middle of our defence. The only replacement you can get for him is his brother. (6.5)
Matteo Contini – Napoli’s best defender in the first half. Made some crucial interventions and showed more composure than usual. We need this Contini every week. One of the funnier moments was when Contini had the ball but was pinned against the corner flag. He faked a clearing, and then casually stepped around a Milan player into space. Like Navarro, needs to establish some consistency. (6.5)
Gianluca Grava – I believe this was Grava’s first Serie A game this season? In any case he played to his potential, and like the rest of the team he got stronger as the game went on. Showed great stamina, and almost got a mini-breakaway after Lavezzi put him through only to be flagged for offside. Played the wingback position well, and didn’t get caught upfield at the wrong times. (6.0)
Michele Pazienza – An accomplished performance. Defended well, and didn’t try to do too much going forward. I think Pazienza, like many other Napoli players, will benefit from Donadoni’s attention to detail. (6.5)
Manuele Blasi – Put his stamp on the game. Forced the Milan players out to the perimeters of the field. Won’t get recalled into the Italy squad, but yesterday he showed how good he is when motivated. (6.5)
Marek Hamsik – Unlucky to see his goal called back. Had a quiet first half, but in the second half he showed his passing skills and his ability to find space in the midfield. A step forward after some recent struggles. (6.0)
Daniele Mannini – Defended and attacked well. Beckham could not do anything on the right except whip in some long range crosses. Was able to penetrate Milan’s defence and got some scoring chances. His only mistake was hitting an off-target shot when he had an open Lavezzi cutting into the 18 yard box, but I don’t think he even saw Lavezzi. Great to have Mannini back again. Man of the match. (7.0)
Marcelo Zalayeta – Missed a couple of chances in the second half. Looked good physically but didn’t have his technique with him yesterday. I think Marcelo is better suited for La Liga or the EPL. The Italian game is often very technical and precise, and Marcelo is a power player who doesn’t always have the control you need in tight spaces. (5.5)
Ezequiel Lavezzi – Delighted the San Paolo crowed with his amazing dribbling skills. When it came to the final ball Lavezzi was a little disappointing, and made an unusual number of stray passes. Not his best game, but at least it looked like he was having fun again. (6.0)
Roberto Donadoni – In just one and a half weeks Don has Napoli playing its best football again. The team was calm, collected, and tactically sound. I was surprised that Zalayeta wasn’t subbed earlier, but I guess Don didn’t want to change a team that was obviously playing very well. (6.5)
Here are the reactions from some of the protagonists last night:
I have not been able to find any comments from David Beckham, who was clearly overwhelmed by his first game at the San Paolo. Welcome to Naples buddy.
Once again, it was great to watch a game where both teams competed and showed their quality. Napoli’s next game is a tricky away game against a Samp team that’s on fire. Based on last night’s performance I think Napoli will slowly climb up the standings. Many of the games Napoli lost under Reja will be draws under Donadoni.
One final note: the next time you play football, may you play with the youthful joy of Mannini and the quality and class of Maldini. Alla prossima.

im still in awe of how good maldini was last night. how on earth did he manage to catch up with lavezzi?! a couple of times as well, absolute legend of the game. im hoping at the game against samp the lads play with as much heart, but i reckon we will get beaten as they are playing amazing football both in attack and defence and of course cassano and pazzini are just playing unbelievable stuff. but you never know in football, donadoni has definitely had a positive impact on the team and with a couple of good signings we can challenge for europe next season! borriello would be perfect hes a strong classic bomber and has some quality skill as well

Ya, Zala was poor at times but I’ve done enough criticizing over the last four months when things have gone wrong. When the whole team plays great it kind of lifts up everyone’s individual performances.

great article by the way neil you truly are the voice of reason.
thats positive news as well because he hasnt said he wouldnt join next season it all depends on milan buying another striker. if they do i reckon he would leave. even though there has been a rough patch players that are linked with naples arent coming out and saying they dont want to join like d’agostino, what his agent said was very positive, that he could fit into the midfield easily. and as for fabio well thats as clear as day. lets hope donadoni brings in some quality and he gets the best out of our current team

Funny, from what I saw Maldini was continuously beaten by players like Mannini and Lavezzi. He still has ability, but he’s too old now. He should have retired when Milan last won the UCL in 2007. Now he’ll just go out possibly injured and without a title. Sad for a great player like him, but it’s his own doing for delaying his retirement so many times.
Mannini was great though. Hamsik had a good game too, but Mannini was undoubtedly man of the match.

Neil, great write up, many people say it was an ugly chippy game but as a fan of calcio you come to appreciate these grudge matches, tense, and full of energy. I agree with you ten fold on Contini and Manini, who easily were the thorn in the side of Milan all night long. No shame in Napoli’s game last night, and The Don while prove his time with the Azzuri was fluke and filled with unfair circumstances. I will say though having the Prez on the bench might not be the best of circumstances but you do what you got to do. Again great match and great review. Wish the best to The Don and his new boys in blue…

can someone explain why de laurentiis was on the bench? and why did some ultras attack galliani? and why did someone throw a molotov cocktail at the milan fans didnt think there was that much bad blood?!

Great write-up Neil. You do a great job on this blog. For the first time in months I have some hope for the rest of the season. Hopefully the team will come together and stay a compact unit, because the goals are just not there right now. Donadoni is getting to grips with the squad and will get some ideas on what we need for next year.
Forza Napoli!

alex milan napoli was the rivalry of all rivalries in the early 90’s so many beautiful matches. So many games to decide titles, there is also the issue of the 90 WC when Napoli fans cheered Maradona instead of the Azzuri, that Italy team had many players from Milan and the rivalry only strengthened. The derby is great, and so is playing Juventus, but even as a child I knew when Milan played it was a treat!

we’ve always hated milan

look up about the mock funeral we held for them when we pipped them to the title. that’s why old silvio wanted to split the country up, never forgave us, haha! forza napoli!

i always knew there was a rivalry but never thought it was that heated! roma, lazio and juventus yea but milan?! suppose they do symbolise the posh north more than any other team and i remember a couple of matches from the 2nd season napoli won the scudetto being reported on bbc. two amazing teams battling it out. seeing the san paolo on saturday night made me think, imagine being there for the first scudetto win

and these transfer rumours regarding borriello are gathering momentum lets hope milan buys another striker (reports of kanoute?!) i thought borriello would be class for the team but now there could be a chance im convinced he would be a beast for us

look at the milan injuries this season. there is something very wrong with the training and medical aspects of milan, juve and roma this season. when he played at genoa he played 35 games. hes not injury prone i dont think

I still dont like the Donadoni hire..I hope you guys dont turn into Milan South
and you know thats how the north would see it

Floccari would be an interesting addition… and since Atalanta want full owernship of Garics it would bring his price down.

he has great skill but i would rather have borriello. we need an out and out goal scorer and target man which marco fits the description very well. either would be quality though and its encouraging that top players agents are saying their clients can play for napoli. d’agostino and borriello would be amazing signings if marino can sort it out plus they are exactly what the team needs

Floccari would be a sweeeeeet pickup. I also like Boriello, but either one is ten times better than Z-Donkey and Denis the menace. I am down with Alex in that all these links are good to see. Players want to come to Napoli.
Hopefully Canna will too

all these names! another quality player being linked with napoli. he has scored some brilliant goals. raises the question though what was the point in wasting money on datolo?

When Napoli bought Datolo it looked like Mannini would be gone for a whole year.

ahh good point forgot about that. if donadoni is after someone like mauri do you think he will go for a more wing attack based formation? mannini on the right (he is right footed?) mauri on the left? with lavezzi running through the middle? if marino can pull out some top class transfers then donadoni could shape up with liverpools formation and using the players being mentioned it could look like this
iezzo
maggio-santacroce-f.cannavaro-vitale
blasi-d’agostino
mannini-lavezzi-mauri
borriellothats if hamsik goes of course. but thats a fine looking team and that attack would be quality
