The Importance of Set Pieces
By: Neil | January 25th, 2009Napoli 0 Roma 3
I’m going to get attacked for writing this, but Napoli played a better game than Roma this week. How do I explain the decisive scoreline? Roma converted two set pieces in the first 35 minutes to take control of the game. A comeback was possible, but it was always going to be difficult against a really good team. In the big picture, Napoli came out strong and had Roma mostly on the defensive for the first half. The two goals, especially the first one, came against the run of play. I can’t remember the last time set pieces cost Napoli this much, but in big games you have to execute and Roma took advantage of Napoli’s inability to deal with a free kick and a corner. That was the difference right there. If Napoli had been able to field Iezzo and Hamsik, the score might have been flipped around.
A game like this shows how important Iezzo is to the team. Gianello doesn’t command the six yard box very well, which led to the opening goal. Offside or not, anything that close to the goal line has to be the keeper’s ball. Admittedly, it was a well taken inswinging free kick but the keeper has to be more aggressive and not stay rooted to the line. On the second goal the defence gave Juan a clean header from the heart of the penalty area. It went just past Gianello’s fingertips, but Iezzo might have been able to get a hand to it. I really like Gianello but today he showed why he’s our third best keeper and can’t realistically compete for the starting job. He’s a really good shot stopper but a keeper has to do much more than that. Both Iezzo and Navarro seem to read the game better.
Offensively, the team missed Hamsik’s ability to create offence. Pazienza did nothing, and I hope he falls well down the pecking order for midfielders. When Bogliacino came on at halftime he was able to make some penetrating passes, something the midfield couldn’t do in the first half. Gargano and Blasi are really good at getting the ball out wide to Mannini and Maggio, but those kind of breakout passes don’t trouble the defence unless they lead to a fast break. If Bogliacino had started instead of Pazienza I think Napoli’s offence would have been much better. As it stands, the offence is struggling. Lavezzi can’t do everything by himself, and even when our other striker plays well – I thought Zalayeta was our best player – they need help from midfield, and except for the Hamsik role the other four midfielders have too many defensive responsibilities to jump into the attack every time. In the first half of the season Napoli’s inability to create consistently good scoring chances was masked by our clinical finishing ability. Today it was Roma who had that clinical ability from the start, and it won them the game.
Highlights:
If there’s any consolation it was good to see Napoli back on form again. After the first two goals Napoli kept playing their game, and there was a positive reaction unlike previous weeks. If we had been able to score the first goal I think we would have won comfortably, but it just wasn’t our day. We keep getting lucky in the standings – Genoa tied, Fiorentina and Lazio lost – but we need to keep playing at this level for the rest of the season if we want to hold on to a Europa League place.
In his post game comments Reja pointed to the referee but I think he’s using the ref as a scapegoat for Napoli’s problems with set pieces. It actually might be good for the players’ confidence. If they think the ref cost Napoli the game, they’ll come out with the same approach Wednesday against Fiorentina. But if they think set pieces were the problem, it could dent their confidence even more. In any case Napoli was beaten by a team with a little more experience in big games the last couple of seasons. Hopefully the squad will learn from the mistakes and play better defensive games against Fior and Udinese. Forza Napoli.
Le Pagelle:
Gianello: 5.0 Needs to command his area better
Santacroce: 5.0 Rusty after a long layoff
Cannavaro: 6.0 Not as sharp as usual
Contini: 6.5 Shouldn’t be our best defender, but was today.
Maggio: 6.0 Outplalyed by Riise
Blasi: 6.0 Average game
Gargano: 6.5 Yet again Napoli’s best midfielder
Pazienza: 4.5 Could have been subbed even earlier
Mannini: 6.0 good defensively
Lavezzi: 6.0 tried to do too much
Zalayeta: 7.0 showed a nose for goal that hasn’t been there this season
Subs: Bogliacino 6.5, Denis 5.0, Montervino 5.0
Reja: 5.5 Should have started Bogliacino
Collectively the team played well but at an individual level nobody really stood out. We needed someone to rise to the occasion and have a big game today but it wasn’t meant to be.

i disagree, the first 20 mins we played hard but after we went down 2 to 0 i saw a lot of mistakes in our defence who played horrible and our mid field who when we got the ball back often made really bad mistakes (bad passes that were constantly intercepted by roma, no creativity) often when gargano wins the ball back he passes it directly to the other team. since hamsik wasn’t playing bogliacino should have started the game or i could even see the young russotto play hamsik’s position he’s fast he can create and i believe that if he got more playing time he coul evolve in to a nice player. then reja subs zalayeta who was finally playing a good game and and puts in denis the stiff he sucks. also if you see that santacroce is rusty take him out and put in aronica who is usually pretty solid. I’m sorry but if delaurentiis doesn’t start spending some money i think this team could be in some real trouble, he keeps talking about the team needs to grow together well they’ve been playing together for a while now and a 3-0 loss at home should be a wake up call to our president to quit being a cheap bastard and start buying a few big name players so we can compete with teams like roma, juve,, and milan and also not lose away from home with teams like chievo and torino. napoli is a big city with the best fans and home field advantage in the league we deserve more. hamsik hasn’t played well for months and i believe that its because he is starting to lose faith in the team’s project i feel if we don’t start spending money and bringing in more talent we will lose him in june. lavezzi still plays his heart out but lets face it he’s alone up front and i fear that he to will soon want to leave and play in a more competetive club that doesn’t want to settle for 7th place. delaurentiis you’ve been great so far in bringing us back to serie A but its time to spend some real money and bring some more talent to this club before we lose the talent we have and end up fighting not to relegate next year. don’t bring us this far just to tease us SPEND SOME MONEY AND BRING IN SOME MORE TALENT WE ALL WANT MORE THAN LOSING 0-3 AT HOME. THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN AT HOME NO MATTER WHO WE PLAY, HOW EMBARESING. MAN UP DELA AND BRING IN SOME TALENT WE’RE A FEW PIECES AWAY. I just hope Marino has a couple of colpi a sorpresa up his sleeve before thr mercato is over

i was fuming yesterday but have calmed down, so i can look at this a bit more clearly. still think the loss was a disgrace but i feel its rejas fault. like you said pazienza is not the same type of player as hamsil and maggio should have been shot he was playing against riise for gods sake! all aurelio needs to do is pull out his wallet for cigarini and iaquinta this january and then nocerino and criscito and a replacement for hamsik in the summer as i cant stand players who just give up and start acting the way hes has been

I totally agree Alex..Cigarini and Iaquinta would totally transorm the team..Enough already with the 3-5-2. In order to compete in Europe we have to field a a 4-3-3 and start Russotto NOW..what the hell is Reja’s problem with him starting?

lavezzi behind russotto and zalayeta it would be lethal! even more lethal would be iaquinta in for zalayeta in a trident no defence would deal with it. then you have gargano and blasi mopping up the midfield and cigarini to pick out through balls for the forwards. im really starting to dislike the 3-5-2 no top club uses this formation

The only problem with the 3-5-2 is that Lavezzi has the freedom to go wherever he needs to be, and the result is often a 3-6-1 with Lavezzi dropping to help out the midfield.
I still think Lavezzi’s best position is trequartista, but as long as Reja is manager Lavezzi will be a striker.
It’s unlikely DeLa will make a major signing this mercato. He’s only going to spend if there’s a chance we can compete for the Champions League, but it’s looking more and more likely we’ll finish near the same as last year.

my god how depressing! i hope this is rejas last season. im so happy what he has done for the club but we need a change we need ferrara to come in and do what guardiola has done for barca and just rejuvinate this team. all de la has to do is get iaquinta on loan and buy cigarini for 7m then we will have a better chance of getting champions league. if we get something at fiorentina i will believe again!

I disagree on everything. Napoli was bad, and didn’t deserve a shit. Except the first quarter, we were real bad and didn’t create anything worthy San Paolo. Sure, Lavezzi had a free kick and Zalayeta a wasted hands, but then none. Nothing. Reja swaps for Montervino, come on!! Where is Russotto. Try to win or stay home!!

I didnt watch the game, but did anyone think that the bad handball call and disallowed offsides goal disrupt Napoli’s momentum?

when zalayeta scored i was over the moon. it took the wind out of our sails a little bit but when that offside goal happened……that sealed our fate. we gave nothing although praise has to go too de rossi who bossed our entire team pretty much and had lavezzi on a lead. hes the best midfielder out there i would love if we could produce someone like him from naples although i would be happy with nocerino. and what the hell was mannini thinking with the crazy clearance BACK to our keeper that resulted in a corner and goal. i think if iezzo was in the net it would have been different like neil said he would have been in charge of the box

I think everything I have been critical about the last few weeks was born yesterday- Reja, the 3-5-2, Hamsik[playing or not], Denis, Zalayeta, Santacroce rustiness, etc…
Cracks are showing and need to be fixed soon.

About the handball call. When I first saw the replay I thought it was a bad call – the ball clearly hit his chest. But if you watch carefully, shortly after the ball hits his chest it changes direction ever so slightly. The ball must have hit his hand, and there’s no way the ref could see that in live action. In the end they got it right, and if they didn’t Zalayeta would have been the first one protesting.
I think Napoli responded well to the offside goal, but as the match went on, after the second and third goals, the concentration started to go. The combination of the disallowed goal plus the offside goal eventually got to the players, but they did well to stay on course after going down 1-0.

neil, i’m glad you wrote that. i was going to say the same thing earlier after reading alex’s last comment but thought it would get dismissed purely on the fact that it is coming from a romanista. they showed the replay from some new angles (compared to what they had during the live telecast) on rai’s la domenica sportiva, and it is pretty clear by those views that the ball rides up onto his upper arm and then guides the ball with his outstretched arm in a downward after hitting his chest initially. i thought they had blown the call originally but the linesman got it right as you said. there is no question that the mexes goal was slightly offside – it was very close and given the crowd and the push off from p. cannavaro in the scrum (again, seen in the replays on rai last night) it may have made the difference in not calling that correctly.
in the end, i think the scoreline was flattering for roma but, overall, were the better team on the day imo. i was a bit surprised by santacroce’s play who i think is a very promising defender but just seemed to have an off day. regardless, napoli have a very exciting team with the likes of lavezzi, hamsik, gargano, denis, santacroce, maggio, et al in the mix and as a club they have made some amazing strides since coming back to serie a. even if napoli do not hit the cl zone by the end of the season, i don’t doubt that they will get there and be a top force in the not-too-distant future with the collection of talent they currently have…and it still may even happen this year. good luck to you guys for the remainder of the season.

i know it was a blatant handball im saying though when it went in it looked like we could go on to win it 2-0 we were playing good stuff. that slowed us down and then the offside goal and the rest is history…my biggest problem with this team is they have no battling spirit sometimes as in when we concede we crumble and just start playing shit. we need a true leader in the team and that is fabio cannavaro. paolo has done well but we need true world class experience if we want to make the step up. the more i think about it the more i want us too sell hamsik in the summer get around 30m then get some real quality and depth especially a world class striker to go up top with lavezzi. if torino get relegated (or we should just put in a bid anyway) we should make rosina a main priority to replace hamsik. with him, fabio, cigarini and iaquinta or even borriello and maybe a young understudy for iezzo (fiorello is meant to be the new buffon) we would have depth and experience

and no more stranieri we are getting linked to so many argentines, paraguayans, uruguayans its not funny! there are so many young italian players coming through that will be amazing we need them! and get some more neapolitan players as well

if we let iaquinta go to russia im going to be pissed. and borriello is crocked for another month i can see ac milan buying another striker in the summer meaning we might be able to get him quite cheap, hes had a really unlucky season with injuries and i reckon we could get him scoring again all those crosses into the box. we need someone this january cigarini would of been perfect we rely to much on the wings

Alex- glad to see someone else is starting to see selling Hamsik for some serious dough is the move we need to make.

if a player is unsettled there is nothing more useless to a team. and shows he is a mercenary. look at lavezzi he battles hard for 90 minutes thats what we need
