State of the.. Serie A

By: Christopher | July 7th, 2009

At Alex’s suggestion (thanks), I’m going to go over some general football thoughts as a more in depth ‘get to know the new guy.’ I’ll try to keep it brief:

Serie A
The coming years of Serie A should be really interesting– especially in terms of finance. The split with Serie B is a huge step in attaining the league wealth that the EPL enjoys. This makes me pretty damn happy seeing as I am not a happy camper when it comes to the EPL– my roommate last year and next year is damned Chelsea fan (the CL knockout duel of basically Serie A vs. EPL was unbearable)– still pondering a roommate change ; / When I think of Chelsea and the EPL I think debt — a couple days ago I read an article that 2/3 of EPL teams are in debt, a total of which is estimated at 3 billion pounds, of which 1/3 is shared between Man U, Chelsea, and Liverpool alone. The point is, along with greater wealth comes the need for greater fiscal responsibility. Chelsea are years behind their schedule in balancing their books, but then again who is on schedule in these times? What I’m trying to say is the Serie A, are closer to this feat then our English counterparts but don’t have the recent results to show it. But the pressure is on them with obscene amounts of spending to uphold popularity, I am dying to know the financial effect of maybe one of the EPL big 4 not making it past CL group stages. The split of Serie A will also put more financial pressure on merchandising and ticket sales, two more things the English do better. Lets face it, Serie A team appeal (outside the big 4) is mostly regional, that may be a broad statement but when you consider mid table EPL teams doing foreign tours you can see what I’m trying to get at. Our need to fill the stadiums shows in Serie A attendance figures compared to the EPL. Many Serie A teams are sharing stadiums, but being in the process of new constructions, we are taking the right steps. A brief stop at the typical online soccer shops will tell you a lot about the state of merchandising. For example at Foxsoccershop.com why can I buy a shittastic West Brom Jersey, yet my only option for Napoli is a t-shirt? All of my above comments can be seen as lame for they are only relevant if we are indeed to follow in the steps of EPL and the way of big spenders. Money is all saddening to discuss in this sense though because in the end I’d like the sport to be about more– such as great youth development, coaching, e.t.c. What I’m saying is it would be nice for the footballing structure to change in a way where regional competition is enhanced. In my opinion I feel that Platini has taken some great steps to make it as such, especially with the homegrown rule for qualifying CL teams.

Teams I like outside of Napoli
Juventus is another team I like, although this is based on childhood exposure rather than real logic. I guess you could make the connection that what drew me to them then, still has appeal now, and that is a great youth sector, and ADP loyalty. Dare I say this…I’ll probably hit myself later, or just delete this at some point…but I do respect Inter style football in a particular sense. I say this as I side with Camoranesi’s criticism of Serie A as sometimes being over tactical. Don’t get me wrong, Serie A is my favorite league, you have to do more than just be able to kick a ball and run– sorry Tiago, but Claudio Ranieri for example, often took this tacticality too far. I guess what I’m trying to say is goals are known to be harder to come by in Serie A compared to the EPL which is not a bad thing by any means, but you can be tactical and play to win at the same time. In the end, football is the “beautiful game,” and you have to play it, its about the enjoyment for the fans, the daringness of the players. So when I watched Ranieri- to continue the example- leave Giovinco on the bench in the dying embers of a hard fought game that looks to be a draw- to bring on CDM Poulsen I get mad. Meanwhile, Mourinho is switching it up to a 4-2-4 in that situation to try to go for it, cause going for it is what it’s all about. That is the only light I view Inter positively in (Phew thank goodness the Inter talk is over)…

Can\'t Wait

Back to Napoli and Donadoni
I like Donadoni, I think Italian media was a little too bitter with him. I don’t know what would have happened if he was the one who was in charge at the Confed Cup, for starters hell would have risen from the peninsula and Donadoni would have been in the middle of the fiery flames. Instead Lippi just walks out from the wreckage with no qualms about it. I liked his management, his subs were usually effective. Didn’t get to see him too much at Livorno, a little at Genoa, but I suppose the real test was Euros and I’m not sure that he passed with flying colors. Seemed that with the group of midfielders he called up for his formation that he had a choice between the AC Milan midfield trio, the core of a team that was at the time not on form to say the least, or the Roma midfield, which was, well, the good one. He chose AC Milan, still not sure why. But he got it together and managed to get the attacking football in and I was satisfied with it, the Italy- Romania game was a massive onslaught of shots on the Romanian goal, and the game with the Dutch could have changed on a dime if Toni’s goal wasn’t immediately ruled incorrectly offside. Last half of the season I liked the effort of team despite results, I think Donadoni can’t be judged to heavily seeing as he was cleaning up Reja’s mess and did not have the same players available to him that helped make Napoli great in the beginning of the season. In terms of incoming players I would love to see an Italian LB flourish at Napoli, especially PDC, but Modesto would do. Overall I would love to see more Italian talent injected into the squad– Quags you rule. But my main concern is formation. Donadoni has a suspicious track record with the 4-3-3 he is talking about, or maybe its more that the 4-3-3 is not really the Italian way. I know this has been a redundant criticism after the long past Euros and now the Confed Cup, but I think this season we are really starting to see the rebirth of the trequartista. I know this ‘in the hole’ position has lately been out of favor in England while usually present in Italy, but now it seems like its really taking hold. We saw evidence to the contrary in the Confederations Cup– Italy anchored at the back launching long balls up to a 3 man strike force that couldn’t hold on to them, i.e, not playing the tactical play through the midfield game that we need. Interestingly, in the U-21 tourny, we saw a microcosm of this in Casiraghi’s formation selections. The 4-3-3 in the games it was used saw really poor linkage between the midfield and the attacking trio, while a mid game switch to a modified 4-4-2 showed the effectiveness of the trequartista’s free-roaming role in the Italian game. Giovinco linked play beautifully from great holding midfield performances of Cigarini and Marchisio to attackers Acquafresca and Candreva. Lazio (Foggia), Roma (Totti), Milan (Dinho), Juve (Diego/ Giovinco), are just a few who will likely be fielding a modified 4-4-2 / 4-3-1-2 with their respective trequartistas in mind. I think this formation would fit well to our current squad of players, without necessarily needing another winger that De La speaks of. Cigarini, and a healthy Gargano will be the part of a great anchoring force to set Hamsik in a free roaming role behind Quags. Hailed as the next Pirlo (not really sure about that one yet), Cigarini has spoke often of his preferred role in front of the defense and had some great games doing so in with the Azzurini. Now I’m too excited for next season…I’ll have to stop here.

Forza Napoli!

Great post Christopher! I also hate the EPL. I just find it very uninteresting, always have.

My main pet peeve is the fascination with signing foreign players who are very average, and give them playing time over young Italians. They always need more “experience”. Well play them damnit and maybe they will get some

As for Napoli, I think the formation depends a lot on if we get a big center forward or not. I have always liked the 442 or 4412. Who would play in the hole? Hamsik? Lavezzi?

    Forza Napoli!

Hey Christopher, great job with the posts so far, I look forward to reading your thoughts throughout the coming season.

I like your point regarding Gargano and Cigarni. I think their performances in the midfield will be crucial this season in allowing for the attack to really open up. I kind of like a 4412 for Napoli with Hamsik in the hole and a staggered front two with Lavezzi set in an attacking winger-type position.

    I just wanted your thoughts on two other points;
What do you think Napoli should do with Maggio this season? Use him in his more natural position of a winger/defender or more of a true midfielder?

Also, what do you think about Datalo? He doesn’t get discussed much but I think he has something very positive to give to the club. He had an edge and aggression to him with a decent crossing ball that left an impression on me near the end of last season.

    Thanks!

Forza Scampia

Mark: I believe the jerseys will be unveiled when the squad begins training in Austria. Shirts, training jerseys, etc… will be made available at the team’s web site. I haven’t been this excited about the start of the season since we made it back to Serie A.

One thing that really does worry me is the # of excess players we have. In no particular order (Gianello, Grava, Aronica, Rinaudo, Amodio, Blasi, Vitale and Denis)…these players all, in my opinion, need to be sold off.

Quello che è accaduto ad Andrea Russotto??? Ho avuto grandi speranze per lui. Quando giunse sul campo è stato un grande successo e ha contribuito a sollevare la squadra. Pensate a inizio stagione. Temo che potrebbe non essere in Napoli piani. E ‘un peccato perché poteva essere una stella con il diritto di coaching e di orientamento.

i agree with you pretty much about everything in your post christopher. everything apart from inter milan i truly despise them! especially now they have the worst marketing campaign ive ever seen and of course moratti is a worm.

when it comes to the premier league try living in england! the whole country is completely brainwashed. because ive been able to watch more spanish and a lot more italian games i can appreciate different leagues. when you ask most people they instantly say all the other leagues are shit without ever watching them.
the only good teams in the premier league are the top 4 the rest are completely shite.
the reason the premier league is considered the best is because of marketing which is completely destroying the game. commercialisation has fucked up sport and the world big time in my humble opinion, but i will stop there.

i try to be wary of the media influencing my opinion as they are a disgusting bunch but i admit i was on the anti-donadoni bandwagon when they turned on him. people always forget what he did with a pretty shitty livorno team (6th place finish was it?) and i for one will give him my full backing for next season. hes got some real quality at his disposal and played for one of the best teams of the last 50 years in cappellos invincibles.
i hope some of that winning mentality has rubbed of.

as for the 4-3-3, it can be an amazing formation as barca has shown, if the team has the right players. thats why i think palladino would of been perfect as the henry type player. i dont think the current team has the right balance for a 4-3-3 a defensive midfielder and a pacy left winger with good skills would have to be bought as well.

having watched palermo last season i would like to see a 4-3-1-2 with lavezzi behind quags and someone like borriello. i was also thinking that zuniga could be moved into the midfield 3 if hes good at defending and has some skills he could be seriously good with gargano and cigarini. this would also let maggio do what he does best. another option is hamsik behind lavezzi and quags but whatever the formation lavezzi has to improve his passing!

tommy mazza i had real high hopes for russotto as well. it baffles me so much that he wasnt signed on a co-ownership or even had his loan renewed for another season. hes definitely gone back to bellinzona and could end up at parma, palermo or somewhere like that. very disappointing.

apparently marino is very close to bringing in nicola pozzi which could go either way. he seems to be injury prone but is only 22 and i remember he went on a crazy scoring run that got empoli into the uefa cup. another example of a player marino should be signing on co-ownership i really cant understand why he doesnt use this option more?

for de la to have brought in the quality players before pre season training is amazing and shows hes deadly serious about the project. hes beginning to sort out the san paolo and getting better facilities which can be a big factor in a players choice of club. ive said it before and i will say it again the youth sector will be the biggest source of talent in the years to come and i cant wait to see some quality neapolitans coming through.

sorry for the long post but im excited for the new season to start!

I am excited too! I agree Alex, if forwards are as is I would go with Quags and Lavezzi with Hamsik in the whole. If we get Pozzi, who is decent, can we get rid of Denis and Z-Donkey please? Pozzi, Pia, Lavezzi, and Quags could be the strikeforce, but I like Boriello, Pia, Lavezzi, and Quags much better

Still would like to have a top class Italian CB as well. The question is, who?

there arent many top class defenders around really. im happy with santacroce and cannavaro as 1st choice for another season. criscito has already said if napoli were to call he woud join, but bocchetti is the top of my list. andreolli maybe? roma dont seem to keen on him.

make a move for this man! hes exactly what the midfield needs and has amazing experience playing in the champions league and winning a couple of uefa cups as well. i should know he slotted 2 past us in the final the bastard. all that and hes from salerno!

if we end up signing mudingayi when enzo is on the market im going to be pissed off

Also with regards to CB’s, I also like Cannavaro and Santacroce. The problem is if they make one mistake, the fans get on them or the coach benches them. Let them play thru it, they will be fine. I really want to see Santacroce take that step up to world class !

I’m still trying to figure out if these Obinna links began while I was away in Europe because they seem so out of ‘the blue (no pun intended),’ especially for what he’s being valued at? C’mon, a couple goals for Nigeria and then he’s too expensive.. This part of the summer sucks, the mercato is getting old, all the news sources are just repeating shit.. but the good news is we’re in Austria and we can look forward to some laying a smackdown in some preseason games!

I appreciate the kind words Lou – you raise some good points. I agree with you completely, Datolo towards the end of the season was a definitely a bright spot and it will be interesting to see how Donadoni uses him– seems like he would fit naturally as a (great) power sub in the 4-3-3 set up.

I’m with vinc we need to give datolo a chance. His crosses were great. Hamsik just needs to get on the end of them. Plus from the right side of the box his free kicks are right there. Are free kicks on goal last year sucked ass. But that will change this year. Napoli making all the right moves. So freakin ready to kick some ass this season. When are the schedules released? I need to book might flights. Forza Napoli.
