Siena – Napoli Live Blog

Same lineup as Bologna. De Sanctis – Campagnaro, Canna, Aronica – Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Dossena – Pandev, Hamsik – Cavani. Siena has three ex-Napoli: Calaio, Mannini, and Contini. Calaio is vice captain and takes penalties. He is also developing a nice striking partnership with Mattia Destro who is on loan from Genoa.

As usual, share your live stream if you can find a good one. Forza Napoli!

Alex i spat my coffee out when i heard him saying that…So the manager of one of the brightest squads in europe doesn’t think that his team can reach third place ever again what defeatist bullshit! Sack this f****r now!
Who does Mazzari think he is? “Napoli are the seventh best squad in italy” haha this is the squad you assembled for this season Walter. so blame yourself and no-one else. another quote i found hilarious for all the wrong reasons was when he was asked about the 3-5-2 formation and if he was willing to changed it, he replies, “We changed it today during the match, we went to a 4-3-3, so there is no lack of versatility” this guy is deluded, or just an idiot, you threw everyone and his brother on to rescue a point once again, i didnt see a 4-3-3 out there, i seen a bunch of good talented players forced to dig deep for the third game in a row without any semblance of formation or tactics. Another wing and a prayer Walter.

Lame. A draw to the 17th place team, consistent poor play against small teams, and a total lack of innovation from Mazz. And so while the team drifts further from the top of the table…no changes are made. Does anyone in the Napoli leadership have balls?

Also he blamed the fact that there was too many young players out there today and that was why they couldn’t score. Who exactly were these young players? Were they in Siena shirts? Did Napoli not line up with the usual players? Was Fernandez, Fideleff, Vargas, Chavez and Dezi playing today? Who exactly were these young players? Hamsik, Lavezzi, Gargano? The same players that have been playing every week for the past 5 years?
Walter Mazzarri: “We made too many mistakes, especially in front of goal. That was also down to the number of young players on the field. Siena were an impressive opponent.”
Maybe it was the subs….Zuniga, Lavezzi and Dzemaili, nope not the subs….Who are these young players?

Can you believe what he said? So with 19 matches left, Mazz has pretty much conceded.

They say that when faced with adversity, the true character of a man is revealed. What we are seeing is a coward on our hands.

I’m more disappointed with dela. I hope he meets with him and says ” if that’s how you feel, then get the FUCK out” I don’t want people with a loser mentality.

We should have let him go in the summer. Fucking coward!!!

If he feels that way then why doesn’t he step down, and let somebody else come I’m and see if they can do a better job.

Dela has to start looking at other coaching options… Mazzari isn’t getting the best out of this squad. Barring an sensational half to the season..I think Mazzari won’t be coaching next season. If we don’t make CL next season..our chances now are at about 10%..our best players will want to leave to play in the CL. Good time to sack the coach, cash in on players who want to leave and rebuild with a new coach & some new classy players.

First game I’ve missed in awhile. With that being said seems like I didn’t miss much. Get behind early to a small team, make odd substitutes, salvage a lucky point, make excuses in pres conference, repeat against other small teams.

This was always going to be the case when you have a coach with no European cup experience competing in both the Champions league and the most competitive league in Europe. Strong squad rotation, flexible tactics and having a customized game plan for each match are things that very few coaches possess (a dozen in all of Europe maybe, 2 or 3 of them being Italian). We can bitch all we want about Mazz and call for his head on a platter but the fact is the club owed it to him to give him a shot in the CL. Depending on how we finish this year in the league I can see Mazz getting one more start to a season minimum.

“If Napoli are in seventh place in terms of budget and wage bill, then we cannot expect to be in the top 2 all the time.”

No Walter, but we can expect to do better against the league’s 16th-18th place clubs. The managers of these teams are clearly coming up with a game plan and getting their players to execute it – why can’t Napoli do the same? Cesena rotated players and both Bologna and Siena were missing players as well (Pegolo is Siena’s 2nd choice keeper!) while Mazzarri has his first choice eleven minus Lavezzi and he can’t do much with it.

Mario I respectfully disagree with your claim that Serie A is the most competitive league in Europe. The EPL has more money and there’s a lot more quality there than just the top 6 teams. I’m not saying it’s the best league, but it’s more of a dogfight all across the standings than Serie A at the moment.

I’m normally considered the level headed one on this board but I just can’t see the team growing any more unless tactical changes are made. The players aren’t young any more – here is a list of the ages of Napoli’s starting 11

    De Sanctis – 34
    Hugo Boss – 31
    Cannavaro – 30
    Aronica – 34
    Maggio – 29
    Inler – 27
    Gargano – 27
    Dossena – 30
    Hamsik – 24
    Pandev – 28
    Cavani – 24

Aside from Hamsik and Cavani who are both 24, every player is 27 or older. The average age of that lineup is 28.9 yearzs. And the core has been together for a while now – player like Canna, Gargano, Hamsik about 5 years with other like De Sanctis, Maggio, Hugo Boss, Aronica, about 3 years.

This project has the resources to do better. Many Napoli players are coveted and would fetch a very good price on the market. Napoli has to figure out how to hold on to these players while slowly increasing the wage bill. Of course, you can only increase the wage bill when the team does well in various competitions. Right now you cannot count on a European place for next season (a win over Inter on Wednesday would get me looking towards the Europa League though) and the questions have to asked of Mazzarri: why is the team struggling despite so many additions in the offseason?

Here is the lineup I would like to see.

    De Sanctis
    Maggio Cannavaro Britos Dossena
    Hamsik Inler Gargano
    Lavezzi Pandev Cavani

Zuinga could sub for either Maggio or Dossena, and Hugo Boss and Aronica back up Cannavaro and Britos respectively. In midfield Dzemaili, Donadel, and Santana can act as backups with Vargas and Chavez up front.

Minor improvements have to be made of course – Napoli’s midfield is a litte weak if you throw Maggio and Dossena back to defence but it provides the structure to create a balanced and deeper lineup than the one Napoli currently have.

that back line needs rejuvenating. I have to disagree with you Neil about the EPL. right now the gap from 1st to 4th is 13 points, that same gap in serie A gets you to 8th place. There is just a lot more competition for the top spots in Italy, whereas the EPL is turning into a two horse race, like la liga.

So I’m curious, we have inter on wed for Coppa, do we rest these players since, according to Mazz they are tired and prepare for genoa, or does he play everybody? Cause really, is the Coppa THAT important?

Why no Britos and Fernandez yesterday? I mean it’s Siena

Mario, I hear what your saying, but we have 8 draws and half of them are on scrub teams.

Meanwhile Milan has lost 3 starters to injury and somehow manage to win 3-0 at Novara, while we are barely scraping a point.

I never realized what a quitter Mazz is! Even if he believes it you don’t say it publicly.

Look what happened to Jim mora when he said “playoffs?” haha man never found work again

Luigi, I think the Coppa is important because it could be Napoli’s only path to the Europa League (if Serie A form doesn’t improve)… so a win over Inter would get Napoli into the semis and one game away from Europe

First of all, Neil, love that lineup. I’ve been pining for it for a LONG time!! Secondly, agree with Mario about “competetiveness” of Serie A. Yes, EPL have more money and quality top to bottom. But when the top half teams play the bottom half teams, it’s rarely a dogfight, tooth & nail affair. If a team wins in Serie A by more than 2 goals, regardless of the opponent, it’s big news. Italy remains (for all it’s problems) the tactics capital of soccer. While this may not make Serie A the most enjoyable to watch, it certainly creates much more balanced results.

As for Mazz, let’s look at this logically. We are in 2 major competitions (sorry TIM Cup). There is only 4 possibilities of how these pan out:

1 – we go on a great run in Serie A and move forward in CL. Mazz stays
2 – we go on a great run in Serie A and get eliminated in CL – Mazz stays
3 – we continue floundering in Serie A but advance in CL – tough call, but I think Mazz stays
4 – we continue floundering in Serie A and are eliminated from CL – Mazz is gone.

So based on the possible scenarios, there is a high likelihood that Mazz is back one more season. Please note that by “advancing in CL” i mean only past Chelsea. Making it to the last 8 of CL is a huge accomplishment for a team like Napoli and Mazz will be highly regarded for this effort. Having meaningful CL matches in Napoli into March is a huge achievement.

Third Michael and Ross, I frequent the other blogs pretty often and it’s always more than a little relieving to come back to our little community here.

I missed the Siena game but not too shocked at the result. It seems clearer than ever that mazzarri does not fit too manage a team at this particular stage of development.

Neil, I see that you mentioned how the Coppa Italia is important because of its path to the Europa League. What are everyone thoughts on maybe putting more emphasis on the Coppa Italia just for the sake of winning some silverware this year. Obviously its not remotely close to the prestige of the CL or Serie A but it is a tittle. Look at Real Madrid and Man City last season they put more emphasis on their nations cup just to give their fans and players a taste of winning. Do you think by us winning the Coppa it could convince our stars to stay after a little taste of success?

Winning the Coppa would be huge, but Napoli hasn’t progressed past the quarter-finals in recent years. This year a dream semi-final matchup is waiting – either Chievo or Siena (Chievo upset Udinese while Siena beat Palermo on penalties after a dramatic 4-4 draw with each team scoring in extra time)

So I think Napoli winning a trophy is a great objective, but we could not beat either Chievo or Siena in league play and Inter is a totally different team that the one Napoli beat 3-0 months ago. Then there’s either Juve, Roma, Milan, or Lazio in the final so yet another tough game.

But a trophy would be a great celebration of the project – it has been more than years in the making – and I imagine the core players would want to continue.
