Siena 2 vs. Napoli 1

By: Neil | May 4th, 2009

After the final whistle, Roberto Donadoni took responsibility for what he called “an ugly moment in our campaign.” This game brought back memories of Napoli’s loss to Chievo earlier in the season. The whole team was uninspired, and we lost the game in the first twenty-five minutes. Not one Napoli player stood out. If you notice that Pia got his name on the scoresheet and conclude he must have done something good, guess again. The goal came from an error by Siena’s third choice keeper who had been on the field all of two minutes. It was unreasonable to expect the same kind of performance as against Inter, but to go from the best form of the season to the worst form in just one week is astounding.

Nobody bothered to tackle Kharja all game long

I did get some enjoyment from this game watching Siena keeper Gianluca Curci in action. He didn’t make any incredible saves – Napoli’s attack didn’t produce very many shots – but he played almost as a 5th defender, controlling the 18 yard box and effectively cutting off most of Napoli’s attacking space. It’s amazing what a keeper can do when he sees himself as more than just a shot stopper. I have no idea why Curci lost the starter’s job at Roma. I also have no idea why he isn’t being considered as Italy’s third keeper. What has De Sanctis done recently to make him a lock for the third jersey? In any case, as soon as Curci left with a twinge in his thigh, Napoli scored on a free kick that Curci would have handled with ease.

Zalayeta and Portanova challenge for possession

Napoli was so bad I don’t think one player would have made a difference, whether it was Russotto or Lavezzi. Every player except Navarro was ripped apart in le pagelle. The main problem was that in the first half nobody was interested in doing any defending, and Siena could bring the ball upfield without very much opposition. Once the game reached 2-0, it was always going to be difficult to come back. Siena’s defence was well-organized and Napoli wasn’t showing very much offensive creativity. One thing that needs to be posted is Donadoni’s pre-game message to Napoli’s fans. The Don called on fans to be more realistic in their expectations. I’m wondering if some potential transfer targets have said no to Napoli because the fans are quick to turn on the team in moments of difficulty. One episode that sticks out was the home game against Cagliari earlier in the season. Napoli had a perfect home record at this point, and the fans started to whistle when the game was tied 1-1. When the fans are too demanding, it puts way too much pressure on the players and they will choose to play elsewhere.

Here are the highlights:

A couple of notes on the mercato. Apparently Inter have offered $20m euros plus Colombian defender Nelson Rivas for Hamsik. I wouldn’t consider $20m crazy money, and plus Rivas has really struggled this year and doesn’t really fit into Napoli’s defence. Hamsik is worth more than that. Second, Napoli target Juan Camilo Zuniga actually played a very good game before leaving in the 86th minute with an injury. However, I don’t think Napoli should break the bank for this guy. The 10-15m euro figures being talked about are a little high. He’s definitely a sought after player, though, so the competition for his services will drive his price up.

Next up is a second consecutive away game against Lecce. Donadoni has promised a much different team, and it really can’t get any worse.

Rivas sucks. Seriously, they couldn’t pay me to take him. Just give us serious cash and we can talk.

I am at a loss. Can’t figure out the lethargic performances we seem to put in except for playing Inter.

I seriously would invest a lot in the youth system, ala Boca Juniors. There is a LOT of talent in Campania and we should be snatching it up and developing it

“Sergio Floccari fu offerto insistentemente al Napoli durante l’ultima sessione estiva di calciomercato, per una cifra vicina ai 5 milioni di euro. Pierpaolo Marino rifiutò, ritenendo il calciatore non all’altezza del Napoli.”

if thats true then marino missed out on bocchetti, cigarini and floccari last summer.

I agree with this philosophy. Some of the names mentioned would be excellent additions.

BUT, I think we still need to keep Lavezzi and get a top goal scorer. If Bologna go down, Di Vaio would come cheaper, but he is getting up there in age. Get someone like him and Boriello would be cool

i have no faith left in marino at all. napoli has gone from being linked to criscito, cannavaro, bocchetti, d’agostino, cigarini, quagliarella, floccari, borriello to players like conti, ledesma, crespo and di vaio.

you have criscito, cigarini and acquafresca who have all said they would play for napoli. they are young, italian and exactly what this team needs. but marino is focusing on ledesma, conti and crespo?!!!

it was reported that dela has given him 40m to spend in the summer, more than enough for the 3 that i mentioned. he is just going to sign more average players the next mercato just like last summer.

I say we start are second string and give Lecce the 3 points. They are a decent southern team. We have to look out for our brothern. If reggina and lecce get sent down then we will be the only ones left. Besdes Bari who look like they are headed up. It would be great to have Napoli, Bari, Lecce, and Reggina all in serie a at the same time. Plus you got Catania and Palermo.

“Who would he choose between Genoa and Napoli? The prospect of the Champions League attracts players, but Naples is Naples, it’s a great city,”

from acquafrescas agent. so when delaurentiis says italians dont want to join napoli what is he talking about? santacroce? maggio who was wanted by alot of clubs?
cigarini and acquafresca should be top prioriy now

I agree with Joseph. I’d like to see all of those Southern sides in Serie A. It’s too bad that Lecce are headed down to B with Bari on its way up to A. Would be great to have those two competing in Serie A. On the other hand, the presence of only one or the other (whether it be Bari or Lecce) in A at the same time probably saves the lives of some fans from those cities. Hate to see Calabria’s only presence in Serie A go down. Forza Napoli!

Enough with the lack of discipline… we have to get rid of players who don’t play for the team

Last year with Bari finishing in another mediocre position and Lecce going up, the Lecce fans were intolerable. It couldn’t be ANY better just a year later.

Z-Donkey needs to know his place- sucky, douchebag, Inter beating, scrub. Ban him from the team the rest of the season and off him back to Juve.

Hey, I want Aquafresca and Cigarini as well. But Conti is a decent player, as long as we don’t overpay for him

donadoni has said that zalayeta will never play another minute while he is on the bench. thank you! good riddance to the z-donkey. although this probably means pia will start the rest of the season. why arent they giving russotto any chances hes looked dynamic everytime he comes on?! im worried we wont sign him permanently especially when he said hes honoured to play for napoli

apparently cigarini is close to joining genoa (why does their director of sport do everything right whereas marino has lost the plot a little?) which means thiago motta is leaving for inter, fingers crossed, so that means d’agostino wont be moving there.

hes still interested apparently so as long as no other big team is interested and de laurentiis pays the money he could still make it to naples.

more lavezzi to juve rumours, still not sure what i think about it all. on the one hand he could become an absolute legend, but on the other after watching him this season im not so sure he can live up to the hype. if juve offered the 15m quoted plus two players i say yes and you know which two players im talking about.

So sad about your brother (z-donkey) alex. I know you only had good intentions with him. You will have to retire those 3 jerseys with his name on the back. Haha! Hopefully I won’t have to get rid of my lavezzi kit, just got it last month.

if i was de laurentiis i would have zalayeta tied to a post in the piazza del plebiscito and publicly flogged, with fans throwing their zalayeta shirts onto a raging fire of which there would be 3. all of them mine

I really don’t want to sell Lavezzi. I think he could become a legend at Napoli, but it’s really how the player feels. If he goes to DeLa and says he wants to leave, we should do it reluctently. I would ask, from Juve, for around 15-17 mill PLUS Giovinco and DeCeglie Marchisio. Maybe less on the money with the other two players. Depends how bad Juve want him. Hell, throw in navarro because they might need a GK after Buffon leaves. LOL

If Lavezzi wants to leave, punt him. I still thinks he is overrated…he will not even get playing time at Juve, I hope he knows that..20 mill plus Giovinco=DONE

legends dont complain about being imprisoned by the fans. 15m plus giovinco and criscito secco is stupid enough to do it. use the money off that sale for d’agostino then dela can spend more on a striker. russotto on the right, giovinco on the left, borriello or acquafresca upfront. now that is fantacalcio.

to be fair the team hasnt even got a deadball specialist. what i want to know is why marino watched gargano and thought he was a playmaker?!
