Serie A Portion of Season Slipping Away

Italy Soccer Serie A
Napoli’s brilliant form in cup competitions is a huge contrast to its sputtering Serie A form. Despite advancing in the Champions League and reaching a Coppa Italia semi-final, the Serie A table tells a different story. In the last 7 rounds Napoli has a record of 2-3-2 in what must be considered an easier strech of schedule. The opposition: Novara, Roma, Genoa, Palermo, Bologna, Siena, and Genoa has not been too difficult a test. The most recent setback, 3-2 to Genoa, saw the team fall behind 3-0 for the first time since Bayern away. Despite a fierce Napoli comeback it was too little, too late and Napoli thoroughly deserves its 7th place ranking in Serie A. The difficult part for a Napoli fan is that there’s little evidence the Serie A form will improve dramatically.

On Sunday a poor first half from Napoli saw Genoa rightfully take a 2-0 lead. I hate to say this, but the turning point for Napoli was when Cannavaro picked up an injury and had to come off. On came Christian Maggio and Napoli switched to a 4-3-3 with Maggio assisting on Napoli’s first goal. After il captiano’s substitution Napoli outscored Genoa 2-1 and almost had another miracle comeback but Dzemaili’s screamer was too central and not a big problem for Frey to punch away. It must be said that Genoa was much stronger than the team picked apart 6-1 by Napoli in December, and the addition of Gilardino has revolutionized the attack. The Gilardino-Palacio partnership has seen Genoa score 9 times in 3 matches with a pair of 3-2 home wins over Udinese and Napoli.

Highlights:

So Genoa was good, in fact very good. Over the whole 90 minutes Napoli wasn’t bad – a one goal loss was probably correct – but the first half was poor and revealed Napoli’s defensive problems. It wasn’t just individual mistakes like Canna getting beat for Gilardino’s goal, but plenty of structural problems. Too many times there was lots of space between the 3 man backline and Napoli’s midfield. Genoa was happy to exploit that space, and Palacio’s stunning first goal came from that no man’s land – too far for a defender to go out, but well in behind Napoli’s midfield at the same time. Brought back memories of Inler’s goal against Napoli last season.

Speaking of Inler, I actually agree with Mazzarri’s decision to rest players – which includes Cavani, Inler, Maggio, and Aronica. There is yet another midweek Serie A round on Wednesday. The issue I have is that any deviation for the first eleven (i titolarissimi) and the team struggles. Zuniga wasn’t very effective on the right, and both Gargano and Dzemaili are the same type of player. After the match Napoli was being linked with a Michele Pazienza return, but I don’t believe that would solve Napoli’s problems. It would just mean even less playing time for Dzemaili and Donadel. I would have liked to see Donadel with Gargano against Genoa. The ex-Fiorentina man could have sat back and performed defensive duties a little better than Dzemaili. But for some reason Mazzarri has his favourites, and Dzemaili will always be first sub in central mid even if it’s a bad tactical decision.

Another note: did anyone notice Hamsik’s missed chance when the game was 2-0? Hamsik was in all alone yet he hit a weak shot low and into the keeper. I maintain that Hamsik is still more of a midfielder who is good at getting forward. Contrast Hamsik with Palacio, who has a real striker’s instinct. I’m not a huge Palacio fan but he’s knows he’s in the lineup to stick the ball in the net and he has a good nose for finishing. Palacio now has 11 goals and is well ahead of Hamsik (6) and Lavezzi (4). It wouldn’t surprise me if Palacio was ahead of Lavezzi in the Argentina setup (although El Pocho has other attributes that Palacio doesn’t.) Regardless, Genoa’s 2 strikers scored 3 times while Napoli’s 3 strikers scored only 2. Which forward line is more efficient?

If you saw anything else in the Genoa game the comments sections is all yours. Better to forget about this loss and look to the next couple of matches – Cesena at home on Wednesday, and AC Milan away on the weekend. Cesena is a must win to get confidence back before AC Milan. Napoli can and should beat Cesena at home. Right now the 3 points won’t do much in the standings (unless other teams drop even more points) but it’s more about confidence right now. I thought the confidence would return after the Inter victory but once again Mazzarri didn’t match up well tactically in a Serie A game.

I think Napoli can still climb the table a little, but based on the past 2 seasons I’ve given up hope that Mazzarri can turn this group into a top 4 team every year. The goal should be to prioritize the Coppa Italia first, to get Napoli into the Europa League, the Champions League second to see how far Napoli can get, and finally Serie A to recover some pride. Not only are Napoli battling with teams above them – Roma, Inter, and Lazio – but teams behind them as well. Palermo, Genoa, and Fiorentina are within striking distance of Napoli and all 3 clubs have the resources to compete for 6th to 10th. Hey, if Palermo and Genoa are on 8 wins right now, why is Napoli stuck on 7? No more excuses Walter, please pay more attention to tactics.

You may’ve seen this already but thought I’d post given all the discussion about Mazz’s direction, or lack of. Here is a recent interview (published yesterday) where Mazz talks a little about how he sees the team and the things he is doing at Napoli. Perhaps old news for some…http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=1575841.html

Well I’m looking at the transfer market and while I see all these teams making moves, I see nada for Napoli.

Mike thanks for the link. There was an article on goal.com where Mazz says he is an “innovator” . Hmm maybe at making excuses?

Amazing how cocky this guy is.

Joe your right we are only 9 points away, but if we continue to play in CL and Coppa we need reinforcements

I mean we got Santana , fideleff, Donadel and Britos and we have hardly used them. 4 players on the bench.

Great observations Joe about Napoli needing to be at full speed to be succesful… couldn’t have said it better myself

There are reports that Donadel wants out… maybe the dressing room isn’t as united/happy as it was last season? I believe Mascara wasn’t too happy with his role before he left.

we need 6 central defenders for mazzarris formation and he only uses 3 of them. that in itself is a problem

grateful for what mazzarri has done for the team but he seriously needs to go

Another thought: sometimes it’s harder to play catch up in the standings. Napoli are only 9 pts behind Udinese, but they have to pass Roma, Inter, and Lazio before they can catch le zebrette. So not only Udinese has to drop points, but 3 other teams as well.

And Napoli has to start winning… 2 wins in 7 matches is poor for a team that has shown its capabilities in the Champions League. Juve is leading Serie A by virtue of their wins, not by being draw specialists and simply avoiding losses.

Well it looks like Santana is heading to Cesena, while Candreva could be going to Lazio.

So far nothing for Napoli. I’m so bummed

As for Napoli, they need to stop this bullshit of letting other teams taking the lead.

    They have too much talent.

I’m still in disbelief that Palermo and genoa are only 2 points behind.

But according to Mazz he is an innovator!!! Hahaha

    Market is closed.

Napoli got Vargas and a couple of minnows.

    Got rid of Santana.

I guess they feel comfortable with what they have.

http://www.football-italia.net/node/15244 This pisses me off. How is Inter able to get Palombo on loan for 1mm and a 4mm buy out clause? He would have been a perfet fit backing up Inler. Why does Napoli contibue to overpay for southamericance that don’t even play?

Or better yet get players that we don’t use.

Nocerino basically went for free and so did palombo.

We could have gotten iaquinta for crying out loud, somebody, anybody.

I just hope that players are not going to want to leave if they see that nothing is being done to strengthen the squad. I know I would be annoyed. We have an opportunity to acquire some talent that can play right away but instead we choose to get players that are young and won’t sniff a start with Mazz

Below is the article I was referring to

Your right about one thing Mazz. Barcelona doesn’t lose games the way you do.

I wouldn’t mind him as a coach if he would just shut up. You haven’t accomplished anything. I don’t see Guardiola talk the way you do.

Sorry for the constant bashing guys. I’m just annoyed at how this season is playing out.

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri has stressed that the Serie A outfit do not model their game on Barcelona or any other team.

The Partenopei trainer admitted that the Champions League holders’ style is a benchmark, but added that he sees himself as an innovator, and is always looking to develop his own style.

“We know what kind of system works best for our team and we’re trying to develop that as much as we can. We don’t model ourselves on Barcelona or any other side,” Mazzarri was quoted as saying on the official Fifa website.

“But obviously Barcelona, who are making history right now, have a winning mentality and that’s the image they’re projecting to everyone. A lot of other clubs have studied the way they play, and their style is a benchmark for everyone.

“I see myself as an innovator. I’m an Italian coach but I advocate a flexible style of football that isn’t based on just the one system. In any case, it’s not the system that counts but the mindset, the movements and the selection of players according to their position on the pitch.”

Napoli currently sit seventh in the Serie A table with 29 points from 20 games.

man i was really hoping we got bocchetti. imagine if we had gotten criscito and bocchetti we would be set in the back… but we didn’t. maybe we will try and get him this summer and allow him time to settle in and adjust to this odd formation. i have a feeling this summer we will make some major changes to the backline. defense is an area you cant just throw new players in you got to give them time to adjust because that one misunderstanding the balls in the back of the net.

Hi Neil In regards to your comment “sometimes it’s harder to play catch up in the standings. Napoli are only 9 pts behind Udinese, but they have to pass Roma, Inter, and Lazio before they can catch le zebrette. So not only Udinese has to drop points, but 3 other teams as well.”, Let’s look at the fixtures between the top 5 teams over the next few weeks.
This week Inter plays Palermo and Milan plays Lazio, my call is that Palermo and Milan both win. If so and we win we will make up points.(even an draw for the Milan and Lazio game will be good)
Next round will see us playing Milan, Rome vs Inter, Fiorentina vs Udinese. This can go favorably for us also.
Following fixture we have chievo with Udinese vs Milan,
2 weeks after we play Inter………….within 5 weeks and some additional upsets, we can very quickly jump to 3-4th position,as long as we win every game.
If that happens, expect some nerves to set in from Juventus and Inter (Lazio, Roma & Udinese should be fading by then)….we may well begin to look ok for a 3rd (possibly 2nd)
If we beat Chelsea(which I think we will) and make it through to the final of Coppa Italia, confidence will be sky high and only give us more momentum especially with us in the home stretch of the season….

We better have an excellent meercato this summer or we will be left behind. Serie A is becoming more competitive every year. Juve is finally making smart transfers, Milan is back as well as Inter. You also have to add Roma who have loads of money. There is also Lazio with Lotito buying players again. Then there is Udinese who must have a top notch scout. This isn’t the Serie A of old where one of the big 3 or 4 slips up and we can sneak in. Lets hope the light bulb goes of in management’s head or we make some changes at the top.

Thanks Luigi and yes I agree Tom. My “feeling” is that we are about to step up a gear. Mazzarri seems to be “holding” us back a little in the league which I think might be due to him trying to time our run.
The last 3 years we have had an excellent first half to the season and then stumbled towards the end. I think he and the club are conscious of this.
Tom, Delaurentis is not going to splash the money freely like the others, he is trying to build this club slowly to be a financial and successful powerhouse. He has commented numerous times in interviews on the Financial Fair Play coming in also.
The next five weeks will determine where we will end up for the year. If we can beat Cesena and Milan this week…..I think we might just give it a crack.!!

Yes Luigi and Joe well wrote I am afraid like most others I was getting ahead of myself in dry gulching everyone but myself over Napoli’s problems u r rite we need to build up slowly and so far in all honesty DeLa has done us OK . Hopefully wot u say is correct
the more I think about it the more I feel it cud be but then the pessimal attitude kicks in and if only Mazzarri could rouse them to give 90 minutes if we are beaten by \ better team fair enuf but I have yet to see a team really outshine Napoli; ie the last 10 mins of the Genoa game we were unstoppable why can’t Maz inspire that sort of commitent for the full 90 ins. Friends Neapolitans and countrymen lend me your ears. No one is any longer unaware of the consequences of drumming up the nerve to say, however sorrowfully, is it indeed time for Maz to go. Is he to be automatically cast among Brutus and his dagger brandishing buddies by De La to escape the censue raining down like fire or will he continue to play his bludy fiddle while Napoli burns and as fate does waits round the corner with a halfbrick in it’s hand missing out on Champions League qualification would be a disaster. Napoli are in nine points adrift of Udinese that is a hell of a lot in reality
so are we programmed for that specific disaster among others? One of which wud be the loss of several of our top stars now they have tasted the CL they will want more and there is always some bastard Prem or now French club ready to steal away Nap’s gud work. Anyway Joe love you for your optimism but as much as I wud love to get behind it watching Napoli since the days of Rudi Kroll has seen me disappointed so many times kicked in the teeth like an Old man lying by the side of the road with the day light in his eye but there’s always been a blu moon to get me back up and even lying broken in the gutter in all those cases I have always faced upwards towards the light blue sky and after reading you Joe I am gonna do that.

Am I the only one rally pissed at UEFA for making the Europa league a joke and teams like Roma, Juve, Palermo who year after year fail to qualify for the group stages of the Europa league or get out of really easy groups. I mean if it wasn’t for these gebronies (not sure if I spelled that right) we would be chasing 4th place, not 3rd.

Looks like a strong possibility that Milan-Napoli will be postponed this Sun. Galliani has sent a letter to the league president asking for permission to reschedule due to weather forcasts for snow and freezing temps this coming Sun in Milan. DeLa has agreed and told the press that he backs up Galliani’s decision.

With the CL coming back on line, I hope this doesn’t happen, but in all probability it will.
