Quagliarella Slumps, Bigon speaks
By: Neil | November 10th, 2009I didn’t see Napoli’s scoreless draw with Catania, but from watching the highlights it didn’t look all that bad. True, Catania are second from bottom, but it’s the nature of Serie A that almost every game is difficult in some way, and even the worst Serie A teams can play well on any given day. Both sides should have scored with Morimoto and Lavezzi having clear breakaways, but in the end there was nothing major that separated the teams.
Auriemma highlights:
I want to write about the Quagliarella situation. It’s no surprise that he was dropped from Lippi’s squad for the upcoming Italy friendlies (Maggio was included though) but he’s also not guaranteed a starting spot at Napoli. When he was subbed against Catania he (apparently) got angry and started swearing at Mazzarri. Normally this would be a violation of team rules, but the club is willing to make an exception for Quags. Why? Probably because he’s a local and his loyalty to Napoli is unquestioned. That’s fine, but it risks creating two sets of standards. Lavezzi misplaces his passport and everyone attacks his motives and he gets a fine. Quagliarella swears at the manager and it’s all OK… that’s Napoli in a nutshell. Napoli is going to find that favouring certain players over others – for whatever reasons – isn’t good for the long term unity of the team. One incident isn’t going to do much harm, but you can’t create two different classes of players. There was a reported Italy-South America split under Reja, and it might have led to the team’s long and painful slide in 08-09.
New director of sport Riccardo Bigon has spoken about the team’s plans for the upcoming January mercato. He claims that the attack is going to be left as it is, but I’m not sure about this. Our two starting strikers have combined for 5 goals in 12 games, and Pia and Hoffer aren’t likely to get much playing time. I think Bigon is hiding the team’s real interests because if everyone knows that Napoli is looking for a striker, the price just keeps going up. In the world football market you don’t declare a position of weakness before going shopping.
As for his comments about Dossena, I can’t really read much into them. He basically reaffirms that Dossena’s track record speaks for itself. I think he’s using the same principle as above: if he declares a huge interest in Dossena, he’s going to be on the losing end of negotiations. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
Finally, Gargano’s injury is not as bad as first thought and he’s off at international duty with Uruguay. Gargano’s Uruguay play a home and home playoff with CONCACAF 4th place team Costa Rica for a place at the World Cup. In the early parts of qualifying Gargano was often a sub, but in the recent games he’s started including the decisive 1-0 loss to Argentina that saw Lavezzi’s team win the last automatic berth.

This might be a foolish suggestion but what about putting Lavezzi into more of an attacking midfield role with Denis up front and Quags acting as Denis’ supporting striker? Lavezzi is running all over the pitch to begin with, maybe that wouldn’t hurt?

Gentlemen,
It is sad, but also true that money make the difference.
It would be nice if price and salary of players would be kept top secret, but unfortunately this is not so. I think that we definitively need new rules. I also think that it is a shame the fact that italian teams have just a few Italian players. I was watching the game Inter Roma the other day and asked to myself: who the hell is Italian in the Inter?
Does anybody agree with me that Quagliarella Lavezzi and Hamsik are not the greatest match? I would like to give it a try for a few games starting with Quagliarella and Denis forward; Aronica, Hamsik, Gargano and Maggio to make the 4 at the midfield; and for the defence just put Santacroce and then ask Neil or Alex for the other ones because I do not trust anybody. About what to do with Cigarini, Datolo and this Lavezzi I am not sure, maybe Christopher could help.
Let me know.Posted from

Lavezzi isn’t winning anybody over this year. I would put out feelers to see what we could get for him
Neil, I hope you are right about the mercato strategy. We need a centreforward to play with Quags right now. A good one, not Denis. I was hoping for Crespo in the summer, but that didn’t come about.
I really think we need to sell some players as well. We have too much dead weight. Pia, Hoffer, half the midfield, Rinaudo sucks, Contini ditto, etc…

If we beat Lazio Ballardini will likely be sacked so they have extra motivation that we must be careful of.
Also Rumor has it that Edy Reja has been linked to the Lazio job.Posted from

Luigi I had forgotten about the Lavezzi-Benfica incident. You’re right, Lavezzi used to have some leeway but he doesn’t anymore. My point is that Quags will always have leeway because he is from Castellamare di Stabia. In any event, I think losing his Italy place and getting subbed will wake him up.
Lou, from every report I read Catania was the slightly better team on Sunday. But in terms of finding the killer instinct both teams were equally bad.
The reason Mannini is playing better at Samp is because he’s in his natural position in a four man midfield. He admitted this after his run of goals. At Napoli he was being played out of position as a wide player who had to go touchline to touchline.
I’d love to see Lavezzi as a trequartista. He covers too much ground to be considered a true striker.
I’d also like to see Reja back in Serie A to see how he’d do with another team. My guess is that Napoli was the pinnacle of his managing career.

http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=39549
so zamparini is accusing southern americans of not passing the ball to quags?? i can certainly think of one that doesnt…
very interesting points about players and money. i think in some circumstances that is the case but there are so many variables in football you never know. look at fiorentina and teams like that they dont earn crazy amounts but they are happy and are doing amazing things…
personally i think the problem with lavezzi is all the attention he recieved went completely to his head, and his talents are no where near the size of his ego. how many times does he run back to collect the ball and try to take on an entire defence. in my opinion the biggest problem with this team is lavezzi. his attitude is very poor and hes simply not that good
lavezzi couldnt be a trequartista even if he wanted to. for someone to play there, they have too have excellent vision, passing, shooting and an ability to dictate games. lavezzi doesnt have any of those qualities.
with the problems they are having at lazio i say we make a bid for pasquale foggia to repace lavezzi. i say replace because after 3 seasons its just not working out really is it?
thats my lavezzi bashing over and done with the only reason i feel so strongly about it is because ive had enough of his ball greediness!
thats the sort of player we need 21, southern italian and someone to partner cigarini! by the way there was an italian journo who said cigarini is a flop??? he needs a tough tackling midfielder next to him gargano isnt that player

Man those teeth are sticking out!!! Now what is going to do when he scores a goal? He normally fixes his hair as he is running towards the stands in celebration….ahahahhahahahah
Alex your right about Lavezzi in many ways. Sometimes it’s addition by subtraction. We have all seen how Hamsik has been getting better year after year…but honestly I can’t say the same for Lavezzi. He does the same things over and over again. Sell the stock while he is high and get Italians on the squad.
But I do love the direction that Dela is taking napoli. I just wish I could be mroe patient.

raffaele palladino, salvatore bocchetti and domenico criscito have been called up to the italy squad…4 neapolitans including f.cannavaro are on the national team and none of them play for napoli whats wrong with this picture???

- bocchettiseriously how isnt there even one of these players on the team???? its infuriating when you think genoa payed 5m all together for bocchetti and he could be playing instead of contini and we payed 8.5m for fucking zuniga??!!

Yeah I agree Alex, too much talent out there not playing for the hometown. It is still great to see how willing they would be to come back. Perhaps its a matter of Napoli only just starting to establish themselves again in Serie A. Maybe over the course of the next two or three seasons people will either come back or rise up through the youth ranks to remain there. At least we have a president that agrees with your concerns.

Alex, I have a question for you: if Lavezzi is such a problem, why doesn’t Mazzarri take him out like he does with Quagliarella? Why did Denis start in place of Quags the Juventus game and why was Quags pulled against Catania? If Lavezzi is not performing then wouldn’t it be reasonable for Mazzarri to take him out of the lineup? After all, he did that with Quagliarella who is a local hero.
It’s pretty much agreed that Mazzarri is doing a great job with Napoli so far, but he keeps having faith in Lavezzi… if Lavezzi is so terrible how do you explain that?

neil why is it contini plays when aronica could take his place and datolo play on the left?? its a crazy world.
who knows maybe he keeps playing him so he wont strop like the petulent child he is. maybe he doesnt want his stock to plummet. maybe he plays him in the hope he will come good and start performing. why does any player that is awful week in week out get a spot on the starting 11?
the problem with quags is he has been struggling with an ankle injury and gets asolutely no service. hes a striker that plays with the ball at his feet yet the only way he can attack the ball is for someone to cross it in or for contini to hoof it upfield!
at the end of the day i judge every player on what they contribute to the team and out of all the squad hes the greediest with the worst attitude so thats why i dislike him so much. hes not a team player it really is as simple as that

Neil, to answer your question, I think the reason why Lavezzi continues to play is to make sure that his stock is still high if/when Napoli decides to offload him. In my opinion the writing is on the wall with Lavezzi when 1.) DeLa was already pissed about Lavezzi wanting more money over the summer and 2.) the passport incident.
I fear that this subject will come up again at the end of the year ESPECIALLY if napoli finishes in the top 6…But at the same time when a young team like Napoli has gone thru 3 coaches in less than a year, it’s tough to build a cohesiveness with your coach.

Haha so true…
“Instead, Mazzarri aimed a none-too-subtle dig at predecessor on the San Paolo bench Roberto Donadoni.
“When I arrived, Fabio wasn’t in great shape for numerous reasons. He had an ankle injury, but continued to play anyway, then skipped training sessions in order to recover.
“Evidently whoever came before me believed Quagliarella always had to play regardless of his condition.””

its definitely not quags position thats the problem as he played in a front 3 at udinese, its the fact he doesnt have a strike partner!
heres an interesting though what if mazzarri keeps playing lavezzi as he thinks he can turn his attitude and form around like he did with cassano??

Guys,
I booked mi flight last night.
I am going for 3 weeks to Napoli. I am leaving this December 12 and come back January 5th. I haven’t looked at the calendar yet, but I hope I will make to watch a live game.
Amici, I see the discussion above. What you say just reinforce my thesis: the guy who was buying the players in the past didn’t have a plan in his mind. This is the reason why everybody is playing out of place. However, I see that De Laurentiis has his mind clear. So I trust in him. After all, he is the one who is putting time and lots of money in this project. I think that within the next two years Napoli will fight for the scudetto.
I am sure that we will kill LAZIO, just cross your finger with me.
Neil, Alex, are you sure that Dossena is the right player for us?Forza azzurri

seems like mazzarri shares your opinion gennaro about challenging for the scudetto! that would be amazing.
i see dossena purely as depth for the left side of midfield. he has been very poor at liverpool but showed some quality scoring a couple of nice goals. if he can get back to his udinese form then i say he would be a welcome addition. the biggest advantage would be aronica could play in continis position as he has been our best defender by far
for the second half of the season i would love to see
de sanctis
santacroce-campagnaro-aronica
maggio-blasi-cigarini-dossena
hamsik-quagliarella-datolobring vitale back from loan in january as well. next summer i could see dela making some huge moves especially if we get into europe. dela is a dream come true when you think about how lotito runs lazio and sensi has fucked up roma. plus his son will probably take over so napoli is set for a long time!
