Quagliarella Officially Signs
By: Neil | June 1st, 2009Napoli fans had their wish come true on Monday as Castellamare di Stabia native Fabio Quagliarella signed a five year deal with the Vesuviani. Two factors proved very decisive in the move. First, Quagliarella’s long time dream to play for the team he has supported since childhood. Second, a chance to reunite with the manager that gave him his first Italy cap and brought him to Euro 2008. Teams like Inter and Juve who were after Quagliagol simply could not offer either of those two attractions.
The signing is important for a few reasons. From a personnel standpoint, Napoli are acquiring an Italy international (11 games, 3 goals) who is proven scorer in Serie A. When you consider that a midfielder, Marek Hamsik, has been Napoli’s leading scorer for the past two seasons, the need for a striker is obvious. Zalayeta and Denis have shown talent at times, but neither has been able to consistently score important goals. Quagliarella is the kind of player you can pencil into a starting spot every game without worrying about him blowing hot and cold. From a strategic perspective, Napoli is showing they are serious about starting a new project under Donadoni. As mentioned above, Quagliarella enjoys a good relationship with Don which started when Don was manager of the Azzurri. I don’t think Quagliarella would have signed if Reja was still manager. It’s a case of Don’s track record and reputation being much better than Reja’s. Other players will hopefully sign on board – Marino has said there will be 3-4 significant new players brought in – and the squad can start to rely less on a few key individuals.
One of those new players will likely be Luca Cigarini. Napoli have already bought half his rights from Atalanta for E 4 million plus the remaining half of Gyorgy Garics. According to goal.com, Parma are willing to sell the other half of Cigarini for around E 5.5 million. Cigarini and Quagliagol will have cost Napoli a combined E 25.5 million, and that’s excluding the value of half of Garics and half of Domizzi.
I’m not sure where all of this money is coming from because there’s no guarantee that Lavezzi will be sold. The Argentine striker has already left for vacation in his homeland, but before leaving he wrote a letter to Napoli fans explaining his point of view. Since Lavezzi isn’t happy at Napoli and feels alienated by Marino, the best thing is for him to go. I hope that Marino is holding out for the best possible deal from Liverpool rather than selling Lavezzi for less than what he’s worth simply to get him out the door. If Napoli gets the same amount of money the club spent on Quagliarella and Cigarini, plus maybe Dossena, it would be a great deal. Sure, Lavezzi could go on to become a superstar, but exchanging an unmotivated player for three quality ones – a striker, midfielder, and defender – is good business.
In other transfer news Napoli continues to be linked with Palermo keeper Marco Amelia. Like Quagliarella, Amelia has a great relationship with Donadoni from their time together at Livorno and then the Azzurri. Wether Amelia wants to leave Palermo or not is another question. It would take something unexpected for Amelia to make the switch from Palermo to Napoli, however I didn’t think Quagliarella would arrive and here he is. Another transfer rumour is Chievo captain Sergio Pellissier. The Val d’Aosta native has been with Chievo a long time, and in the past he has expressed satisfaction with his role at the Lombardia club. However, the 30 year old received his first Italy call up recently and if he’s looking for a new challenge to advance his Italy status he could seek a move elsewhere.
In other news, Fabiano Santacroce was left off both Marcello Lippi’s experimental side for the Northern Ireland friendly and Pierluigi Casiraghi’s U-21 roster for the European U-21 championships. His omission has to be because of discipline. On the field Santacroce has improved after a couple of red cards early in the season. However off the field there are still question marks over his attitudes. This past season he had a run in with the law over drinking and driving, and there are constant rumours about conflict with teammates in training. I have a feeling Lippi will take the Cassano approach and decide his poor discipline outweighs his positive qualities, so we may not see Santacroce play for the Azzurri unless there’s a new manager. The U-21 omission is a little more puzzling – Casiraghi has included him in past squads – but maybe he’s changed his selection policy in recent months. In any case, Santacroce is no longer eligible for U-21 so in the future we’ll see him either in a full Azzurri jersey or not at all.
Last, and certainly least, is a recap of Napoli’s 3-0 victory over Chievo. The two most interesting things about the game were protests by Napoli fans after a season of somewhat disappointing results, and Francesco Montervino’s first Serie A goal. Since the game was little more than a friendly I won’t write anything more than the proverbial, “it’s nice to end the season with a win.”
Highlights with Auriemma commentary:
And that’s it for the 2008-09 season for SSC Napoli. My next post is going to be an end of season recap, which will be more of a big picture evaluation rather than a summary of the past ten months. Plus there will be the usual mercato reports and other relevant news. I would like to keep posting regularly over the summer, but with no games I may not be as motivated. To be honest I don’t mind the break because for the live games I have to wake up at 9:00 Sunday mornings, often on a short night’s sleep. So the blogs may not be as frequent, but I’m hoping they’ll still be full of the same crap I’ve been feeding you for the last while.

i take back everything i said about players wanting to play for napoli because of maradona! hes perfect for the team and the fans

just had a look at some of the transfers made this season and bocchetti was only on a co-ownership with genoa? how is it genoa has all these quality young italians on loan or co-ownership and napoli only buys players outright? why isnt marino signing promising young players like bellusci and russotto on co-ownership but paying 8.5m for zuniga?! and what the fuck is he doing keeping zalayeta?!!!

russotto is on coownership?

I am with Alex on Cassano. yesssssss please! Cassano and Quags upfront, with Cigarini pulling the strings in midfield? Oh yeah baby! Man, can you imagine the atmosphere with that on the field.
I still can’t get my mind around 8.5 mill for Zuniga.
I am about 2 minds on Santacroce. On the one hand , i want him to stay in Naples and develop as a top class CB. On the other hand, I also breathe La Nazionale and think Ferrara could do wonders for him at Juve and help the national team as well with Cannavaro, Chiellini, Leggro, and young Ariaudo there

cassano is definitely a dream signing. if no one picks him up this season i think de la could splash the cash next season the things he says about him, i reckon hes a big fan. well anyone who loves football should love cassano hes unique with what he can offer to a team and stupidly entertaining.
de la has already spent a fortune so unless he goes wild i cant see anymore big signings being made.i said that i would be happy with a playmaker and a striker and de la bought an amazing neapolitan striker and a potentially world class midfielder so im very happy. also campagnaro is a solid player from what ive heard. now all we need is a left back although i would of liked to see vitale given another go.
my only gripes so far this mercato is not signing russotto, bellusci and the signing of zuniga. maybe he will turn out to be quality but with 4 players being able to play RB i dont understand why marino had to pay 8.5m on him.
i agree with you about santacroce vincent, ferrara would make him even better but i wouldnt even think about selling him unless another potential world class italian defender was going to join. in fact the only player i would have replace him is bocchetti as he is the only player i can see with that potential. maybe andreolli as well.
my biggest concern for next season is donadoni. he has been given some real quality to work with so its up to him now. what worries me is what formation will he use? with the current squad a 4-3-3 would need an extra quality player for the attack and then some papers have him playing a 3-5-2 or even a 3-4-1-2?!!! if i see a formation with only 3 defenders at the back i swear i will fly to naples and kill donadoni myself.

and for fucks sake marino sign some young italian talent! russotto and bellusci should have been bought on co-ownership. whoever does genoas transfers is an absolute genius

how can you keep zalayeta but let russotto go??? the kid looked good everytime he came on and scored in training. he was a quality sub for lavezzi as well

No fake. Z-Donkey does nothing except score a goal against Inter once a year, at least Rusoot created chances and is younger.
I still think we need at the very least 1 top notch CB.

I was thinking we still need another reliable striker. Denis and Zalayeta to me are useless and Russotto is gone. Inacio Pia had an impressive run near the end of the season but I do not see him as anyone reliable in the long term.

Napoli to bid 6 mill plus santa for vargas??
Posted from
United States

if they sell one of the brightest italian defenders for vargas and 6m i will seriously give up with napoli. im sick to death of this obsession marino has with southern americans and paying over the odds for players! 8.5m for zuniga when he could of bought russotto and bellusci on co-ownership for that much probably.
fuck vargas bigtime. santacroce is more important than any other player on the team the defence should be built around him. think this is just paper talk though marino isnt that stupid

Better not happen Lou. Santa is to good

Looks like Genoa might get the American defender Onyweu. Considering the fact that Genoa has been great at picking up players, would this be a player that Napoli could consider?
Also what is the status of De Ceglie from Juve? Are we going to get him.
I also saw that Di natale might go to Parma for $8 mil. What the F? His wife doesn’t want to come to Napoli, but would rather go to Parma. If we get Toto that would be great!!!

fuck. at least there is interest in nocerino. maybe next season. i would love to see a midfield of nocerino, cigarini and gargano.
regarding the formation do you think a 4-3-1-2 could work?
de sanctis
maggio-santacroce-cannavaro-?
blasi?-cigarini-gargano
hamsik
quags-lavezzihamsik behind lavezzi and quags linking the midfield and attack? could be deadly
http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=35728
maybe a lack of discipline had a major part in last seasons collapse. i keep forgetting how well the team played the first half of last season

If we can’t pick up another striker worth starting I like the 4-3-1-2. At present, do you put campagnaro at LB? Also what about putting in Zuniga at RB and pushing Maggio up into the midfield in a similar role as last season and then using Blasi as a sub.
I also think Datalo can do some special things if he gets more opportunities. He always added some flare and aggression to the generally flat Napoli lineup in the second half of the season.
By the way, is Vitale gone?
As of now, it doesn’t look like De Ceglie is coming Luigi.

i dont think de ceglie wants to join napoli. i really think vitale is good enough he just needs an experienced player/backroom staff to get him through a full season playing his best. he was brilliant the first half of last season.
di natale would be beautiful with quags and lavezzi it all depends on him though. and his wife apparently

I like Vitale. I think he should get a look at fulltime left back.
I would also really, really like to see Nocerino in the Napoli light blues. Love his game
And if we give away Santacroce and anything for Vargas, I will fly to Naples and kick Marino in the nads. Is this some kind of sick joke? First of all , Fabiano will be class. Second of all, Vargas sucks.

i think its just paper talk.
i would like to see a more experienced LB come in and alternate with vitale, someone like grosso.
i think a midfield of gargano, cigarini and nocerino would be insanely good. with nocerino i think its a matter of time until he joins napoli, while he was at juve he said a couple of times that its his dream to play for his hometown club

Too may Naples players say that, yet Quags is the only one who put his money where his mouth is. I hope Nocerino comes, but we will see.

Fabio Canna said it and look what happened

you have to ask how many neapolitans has marino actually really wanted and bid for. he could of got palladino, bocchetti, criscito on loan or co-ownership but he prefers to pay full price on stranieri
doesnt matter anyway zamparini wont sell antonio cheaply and the team should be alright with blasi for another season

Napoli really needs to get rid of a few players like Pazienza,Amadio,Denis,Aronica,Gianello , we really dont need them, but we do need some extra money.Im glad Marino has brought in Cigarini+Quagla+Zuniga they all great players and im sure will do great things for Napoli Next Season , but we still in need of another proven striker that will help us finish in the top 4 or even win it .There has been many names that Marino did want to bring in like Di Natale,Victor Obinna,Goran Pandev,Nilmar,Cruz,Cassano but some are very hard to get and others maybe to expensive .Who do you guys think is the best striker to get?? & pls dnt say Cassano .

Where has everyone been?
What are people’s thoughts on the inter offer for Hamsik (15m + Mancini)? Also, what do you think it will take for Juve to get santa?
