Old Foes New Horizons

Back on the road, which during the end of Reja’s and [all of] Donadoni’s reign, was a worrisome venture. Now there is a certain air of expectation surrounding the game, one of optimism and victory. The words spoken by Mazzarri say it all:

watm“It’s the ideal week to lose to Catania. They are a team of a good level that plays good football and if there is too much enthusiasm this could well become negative because the enthusiasm has to stay with the fans,” Mazzarri said.

“Instead, my lads and every one else at Napoli have to have the spirit and the brains not to underestimate the job at hand.

“This is the jump in quality, making people understand with facts that we are actually a team. The most important game is always the next. I don’t like to speak about results. I like to speak about performances and work,” Mazzarri explained.

“We should no longer have to concede to wake ourselves up, painful things do give a better taste in the end, but we are working to ensure it doesn’t happen anymore.”

Last season they whooped us nice in an efficient 3-1 victory, when we were in the beginning of what would be some treacherous form. Now the roles have reversed a bit. Mazzarri showed us that achieving a road victory doesn’t have to be a once a year holiday, but rather a reoccurring celebration. And… the Etnei, 7 points in 11 games.. ouch. No surprise that Atzori’s job may be resting on this one despite quite the injury crisis. Along with the injuries (Delvecchio the most notable) there are suspended defenders Matias Silvestre and Ciro Capuano from the spanking they got from Viola last week. That is poor luck because Capuano has looked a ray of shining light for the Sicilians in defense so far. While I look down on Catania from our 6th place perch, it should be noted that our avg. goals per match allowed is 2.2, compared to their 1.4 (away, to home, respectively). Humility boys, humility. With Japanese sensation Morimoto coming back from suspension, lining up alongside Mascara, Catania are a team to take seriously in terms of potential goal threats. Our back four has not looked like the most assured aerial force either.

A Game to Win

Mazzarri will be looking for a clean cut victory here, no last gasp emotional come backs, just some start to finish solid play all the way through. The kind of play that will start to officially give the team an identity. There shouldn’t be any massive changes from the side that whooped Juventus.

It will be interesting to see if Datolo gets his wing spot back after his stellar role last week, as well as if Quags gets to be in the starting 11.

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): De Sanctis, Grava, Cannavaro, Contini; Maggio, Gargano, Cigarini, Aronica; Hamsik, Lavezzi; Denis

Lining up against our old nemesis 3-5-2 the midfield battle should be interesting, but winnable, easily- really looking for Gargano and Cigs to dominate here (as I do pretty much the whole team). We can’t get give away possession cheaply in midfield, as all it takes a through ball to Contini to pass the ball to Morimoto in front of net. But again, defense needs to be stable, hopefully we learned from the Milan game. Speaking of stable, or lack thereof, where has Zuniga been? Talk about the antithesis of reinforcement. I’m pretty upset he’s been about as useless as an empty mayonnaise jar, as I had high hopes when he was signed. But did I mention I love Hamsik? Get that contract extended even further.

Unfortunately I have to leave for the weekend : ( to a land of no internet- but espn360 is showing us live again so I’ll catch the replay. Have a great weekend everyone.

Lets make it a 5 game unbeaten record Mazzarri, Forza Napoli

The bright side is we went on the road after some big emotional games and still picked up a point in Catania. Not too upset about this.

About Quags= Like I said, he is a second striker. He needs to be upfront with another striker to work off of. Denis still sucks, and Lavezzi is wherever Lavezzi wants to go. I am with Alex, Zeke is pissing me off.

We still need a top class center back and centre forward to seriously challenge for CL spots.

But I will take the point!

a point away to catania is a good result considering our away record! i was just so frustrated with how the lads conducted themselves. de sanctis really bailed us out as well!

the most frustrating thing about this team is even when they are playing like shite they still try and go for the most difficult pass instead of playing it simple. how many times did the defence just hoof it up the pitch as well for catania to just win back possession??

the passing throughout the whole team was dreadful yesterday, half of the lads looked like they were asleep!

i have to say quags just isnt getting the service. how many times did lavezzi get the ball and then try to take on the whole team?? then when he loses it he just drops his head and mopes about. i for one want him gone im sick of his pissy little attitude hes been at napoli for nearly 3 seasons and just hasnt matured

i dont even want to mention the defence as its clear we need some top class reinforcements. it was definitely a bad day at the office but whats most important is how napoli plays against lazio in a couple of weeks! really cant wait for that one

    Agreed Alex.
my opinion is that we have three good players (Lavezzi, Hamsik and Quagliarella) that for their characteristics make it hard to combine them together on the field. Maybe signor Marino should explain us how he wanted them to play in his design. Also, Marino should tell us how we are supposed to manage the midfield now that Gargano and Pazienza are out. I think that Blasi would have returned very handy right now. Cannavaro and Contini: what a shit! Yesterday CACCA-MOTO could do most likely everything he wanted. Good thing that we had Saint Morgan.
    Let’s hope for the best.

Didn’t see the game, but like Vincent I’m not too upset with a road point. Our record in the last five is 3 wins and 2 draws, with 3 of those games coming on the road. That’s a good run of form.

The last two years Napoli has lost 3-0 and 3-1 in Catania. I’m happy with a shutout, even if it took some good saves from De Sanctis and some misses from Morimoto. Just like the Milan game, even if there’s a bit of luck it’s also a legitimate point.

Gennaro, it’s not Marino’s fault that two defensive midfielders are injured. That’s just bad luck. If we still had Blasi on the roster it would leave us thin in another area. How could Marino have known the defensive mids and not the strikers or defenders would suffer an injury crisis? Actually the defence did suffer a crisis with Santacroce, Campagnaro, and Zuniga all out. What Napoli needs to do is to start bringing up players from the primavera squad or reserves.

why do you think marino was fired? the team is incomplete. pazienza is absolutely shite at everything, blasi was a proper defensive midfielder and a better player. he sent him out on loan and didnt replace him. when gargano is injured we have no one to replace him which is marinos fault

Alex I don’t get your point at all. I agree Pazienza hasn’t played great for Napoli, but when players get injured it’s not the fault of directors or managers. It’s easy to second guess decisions when two players in the same role – Gargano and Pazienza – are inujured at the same time but nobody questioned the Blasi loan move before.

How many defensive mifielders should we have on the roster? Should we have five in case four get injured? If Marino had stocked up on defensive mids you would be ripping him for leaving other areas short. In fact we all rip him for the defence and for the left side of the field as it is. But you can’t find fault when so many defensive players are injured.

    Neil,
I do not disagree with you. But there is a point that I need to make.
To work on the primavera is a great thing, but it cannot be the solution when your team has great expectations. If you are looking at going to the UEFA league or more than primavera are not the best option.
Back to my old days it worked like this:
Players from primavera were given to team in serie C or serie B and then if they got good they went back to Napoli. There were just a few exceptions: Ferrara, Carannante and Cannavaro. But you could tell that they were not regular primavera players. They just knew how to play.

of course people questioned the blasi move! he was the only defensive midfielder we had! gargano is a box to box player and pazienza is a really bad player and shouldnt even be on the team not even as back up.

i dont understand your logic? when a specific player leaves then surely he has to be replaced by the same type of player? marino didnt do this and its his job to build a team taking into account injuries etc??

he has left all areas of the team short as well neil isnt this what everyones problem with him was? what would happen if quags and denis got injured??

Gennaro, you’re right, primavera players are not good for long term injuries… but surely the better ones can fill in for a game or two? If Napoli worked more on the primavera, the team might have more players like Ferrara, Carannante and Cannavaro. Maybe not the same quality, but players who wouldn’t look out of place playing a game in Serie A.

Alex, however much you hate Pazienza he’s still considered a defensive midfield. Is he better than Blasi? I don’t think so, but from watching Blasi play in the preseason games it looked like he wanted out. He would come on as a sub and get booked for reckless challenges within a few minutes. For all I know he privately requested a transfer or loan move. I don’t know why Blasi left and not Pazienza, but there are better ways to criticize Marino than accuse him of bad planning when the team has injury problems.

You’re right, he didn’t plan the team very well but you just can’t stock a team four deep in every position (unless you’re Man U) eventually players are going to request loan moves to get a better chance at a game. Just my humble opinion.

i understand what your saying but the team lacks that tough tackling midfielder and its simply down to marino not replacing blasi. the way pazienza tries to pass it seems he thinks hes more of a regista than anything else…my point is out of all the midfielders there isnt 1 pure defensive midfielder which is down to marino.

the primavera debate is a very interesting one because when you look around the league there is bocchetti, criscito, nocerino, foggia, di natale, borriello from naples and so many more from campania that could have been in the primavera and made the step up into the 1st team.

maybe you could do a post on the current primavera and loaned out players?? although it is difficult to find information about them.

dela has said he wants to focus on the primavera through new training grounds and top scouting, lets hope its sooner rather than later! did anybody see ciro immobile played for juve? another promising neapolitan and at 19 i thought he would be in our primavera…

I liked Blasi’s game, but it did seem he wanted out. It would be nice to have Nocerino for that role!

What do guys think we should aim for in the January window? I think if we could swing a top notch CB and CF it would be nice, maybe sacrificing someone like Lavezzi if we had too. Just a starting point, but Lavezzi is not progressing, he is worse than he was 3 years ago. Something is not quite right.

MARINO is gone..Why all this talk?
Marino did some good things and some not so good…just like “ALL” sporting directors.
He is in the past. The personal vendettas against him are irrelevant. The present and future is now Mazzarri, Bigon and the current team. Drawing away to Catania aint a bad result. Catania are fighting for their season. We’ve had a big month and a letdown in form was always probable. The international break has come at a good time!

    Seba,
As a seasoned Napoletano, I owe you an answer.
Napoletani do not forget. We talk about a victory that Napoli had 21 years ago with Juventus (this is definitively in the past) but you think that we should forget about something that happened recently. According to your theory we should forget about that too because it is a story remotely old.
The truth is another: Marino brought to Napoli not less than 70 players and all the coaches had always troubles to set up a team because the purchase didn’t have a real plan. Even with Mazzarri. He has lots of troubles when he has to decide the players. If you think about the team for a minute, you will find out that our players are not bad but with their individual characteristics do not make logical sense to a balanced team.
    Seba,
Alex has a point and actually Neil has a point as well. Who actually doesn’t have one is Marino.
He was already around during Ferlaino’s era. The president told him to grub his shit and go away!
Now De Laurentiis finally opened his eyes and told him to repeat the action!
Let me tell you that he got fat over the time because of his not clear businesses. See transactions with Brescia and so on.
Guys, believe me, in two years you will see many players leaving and not because they are not good, but because we do not need them.
However, I will try not to talk about that jackass anymore.

    Forza Napoli

Marino is gone, but his decisions will impact the next 3-5 seasons. I have no problem with people bringing up Marino as long as it’s a (mostly) new perspective or new idea.

personally i dont think we could make any major signings in january unless we buy from a struggling team. i would be happy with vitale and blasi returning from loan and buying dossena. then we have good cover for the left and someone to chase the ball allowing cigarini more space. maybe even bring ciano back from loan and giving him a chance

the best thing would be for santacroce to regain full fitness and aronica replacing contini in the back 3. next summer will be interesting, i think every fan of napoli wants to see cassano playing for us but for now thats just a dream. i would like to see pazzini maybe, or if milan sign dzeko a serious bid for borriello.

one player i would love to see is raffaele palladino hes really starting to fulfill his potential. whatever happens i want lavezzi gone. the biggest problem with quags is he doesnt have a striking partner to play off. lavezzi gets the ball at the halfway line and then tries to dribble past 3 men at a time! ive had enough of his complete greed, hes just not very good at anything apart from running in a straight line

its difficult to find info on the primavera but i always try to make a mental note of who scores and plays

    Hi guys,

I havent posted in a while, because I am feeling my ignorance as an American growing up on baseball, and only coming to calcio through marriage to a girl from Napoli. At first I loved watching Lavezzi, but now I see as you do, they he doesnt work well with other players. I also saw a few impressive things from Gargano last year and liked the fact that a small guy like me could kick butt in Serie A and was influenced by articles in Goal.com praising him. But now that I watch more closely, I dont see anything extraordinary coming from his play. My father-in-law was a goalie for Naples in the 50s, he is also a well known musician and band leader in the Naples scene, his name is Tony Iglio. I will ask for his insight and pass it on. I know he is a huge De Santis fan, even when he was getting goals scored on him, he insisted the ball with great instincts.

Thanks for the story Alan… it’s funny how both Lavezzi and Gargano feel they’re underpaid for their roles at Napoli. I have a feeling that both are going to jump ship the second their contract expires.

There seems to be two sides: those who think that Lavezzi and Gargano aren’t being valued highly because they’re not earning it on the field, and those who think that Lavezzi and Gargano aren’t reaching full potential because they’re not being paid fairly. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

If you take the $$ out of it, both players are highly valued by their national teams. Gargano is seen as crucial for Uruguay’s playoff against Costa Rica, and Lavezzi won Olympic gold with Argentina and often features in a talent rich Argentina team. That tells me that maybe Napoli is making a mistake by underpaying them.

neil interesting argument but maradona has proved hes an awful coach. when you consider the players he has called up (rolando schiavi anyone) i wouldnt take any notice of lavezzi recieving a call up. he wont even call mauro zarate up and hes their best striker second only to messi!

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=104430&cc=5739

just look at those stats. for a forward its awful. the only club that showed a whiff of interest is liverpool, even that debatable, but with the players benitez has signed thats not exactly a ringing endorsement. with the spine of the team liverpool has a good manager would have built a world class team he just keeps signing really average players

personally getting a call up from your national team is not the best indicator of how good a player is look at simone pepe for italy…

Alex you make some good arguments… even a great manager like Lippi can makes some strange choices like Pepe, and Maradona as a manager is hardly great (at least not yet).

But national call-ups aren’t the only factor. I bet when Lavezzi and Gargano leave they will start playing better for their new clubs, and Napoli fans will ask “Why didn’t they play like that for us?” and the answer will be because the other team is going to pay them better. But that will be a few years down the road anyways.
