No Excuses
By: Neil | January 19th, 2009For the second time in three rounds Napoli has been outchanced and outplayed by a team in the relegation zone. For the first half of Sunday’s game Chievo looked like the team competing for a Champions League spot and Napoli looked like the side with the league’s worst offence. Napoli cannot blame anyone except themselves, and it goes deeper than Reja who can only shoulder so much of the blame.
At the individual level, I saw satisfactory performances from only two players: Lavezzi and, surprisingly, Zalayeta. Maybe Maggio as well, so that’s three. Everyone else had quiet or below average games. I honestly thought at least more players than the three mentioned above would show some fight. Sure, the quality won’t be there every single game but for the last season and a half I’ve seen Napoli players play their hearts out time and time again, but not so much in the last few months. Ever since November there’s been a very gradual slide in which the team hasn’t played a consistently good game for 90 minutes (maybe the Lecce victory was an exception). Some of our home games in that time frame, like 2-0 over Samp and 2-2 vs Cagliari, weren’t comfortable and you could see the problems start to crop up back then.
Even the normally candid and straightforward Reja seems to be at a loss to explain things. In his post game comments he seems worried about the season as the team is a shadow of the group that beat Fiorentina and Juve earlier in the season. The normally calm and rational PierPaolo Marino is also upset, calling the team two-faced and revealing that both Hamsik and Denis will be fined for their roles in Sunday’s game.
It’s hard to talk about a crisis when your team is in fifth place, but in the last five rounds Napoli have played five teams in the bottom half of the standings and with upcoming game against Roma, Fiorentina, and Udinese there will be a dramatic increase in the quality of our opponents.
There’s really not much to say about the Chievo game. Both penalty calls were correct, and Hamsik’s sending off wasn’t that big a deal because he was playing poorly until then and the numbers were evened up ten minutes later. Despite playing a bad game Napoli still had the score at 1-1 and were playing 10 vs. 10 and couldn’t outplay a team heavily favoured to be relegated.
Here are the highlights:
Although Marcolini was calm in converting two penalties, my Man of the Match was Sergio Pellissier, who set the tone for Chievo with his agressive runs that caused problems for Cannavaro and the entire Napoli defence. Sorrentino also deserves credit for a game saving stop on a Zalayeta drive but other than that Napoli made his day fairly comfortable.
If there are any positives, it’s that Napoli has always risen to the occasion against the big teams and I belive that won’t change in the ritorno portion of the schedule. Of course, in those games great performances don’t always transfer into points, but at least we can go back to being the underdog who gives the favourite all they can handle.

Where to start- if the team is not responding to Reja, he has to go, simple.
Hamsik- great young player, but like I have said on here before, he is expendable. Something in his character just has me spooked. Plus, we can get big big dough for him at the moment[Man City?]
Denis- freakin disgrace, when was the last ime he did anything? We need a top class striker to pair with Lavezzi.
Heart– the team needs to show some on the road or the CL is going going gone

Vincent, your assessment is spot on. But something tells me we’re going to give a good character performance against Roma, despite missing Hamsik and maybe others.

By losing to Torino and to Chievo, Napoli does not deserve a spot on the CL. I think Napoli needs to figure out how to win on the road against lesser opponents and stop playing down to their level and STOP talking about CL. Marino said it best…these guys are like a Jeckyl and Hyde team. Neil, do you feel that Reja is starting to lose his players? This is the problem with a young team, they can shows flashes of brillance and then they look like they can’t even beat the school of the blind.

Alex, Santacroce had a small injury problem but he should be OK for Roma. Given that Contini and Rinaudo weren’t very good I think Santacroce would have made a huge difference.
Luigi, I don’t think Reja has lost the players, but it might be that the players are looking for direction and growth that Reja can’t provide. I think this should be Reja’s last season with Napoli, and unless the club keeps getting progressively worse he might as well be allowed to finish off the year.
Hamsik was banned for two games, so he misses Roma and Fiorentina.

whos a good option to bring in though? we need a young manager who mixes youngsters with older players and most importantly he BUYS ITALIANS! i dont want to see this team turn into an inter or a milan. there are loads of quality young italians coming through and alot of mint napoletani as well. i would love to see ciro ferrara come in the next generation of italian managers

I’m throwing out a name here: Mancini…do you think that could be realistic. I feel if we have a good coach…the chances of us getting players to go to Napoli will increase. My opinion anyway.

i pray we never get mancini. he is a worm and the only reason inter won ANYTHING recently is because of calciopoli. look at how they just collapsed last season. and the rows he had with players. hes a hot head like when he was a player. and he was awful in europe.

Roberto Mancini isn’t a bad idea. As a manager he’s won Coppa Italias with Fiorentina and Lazio, and more Coppas and Scudetti with Inter.
But I don’t think DeLa and Marino would consider him. He would probably price himself out of the job. Ciro Ferrara I think is a better alternative.

hes won plenty, but i remember as a player he was always getting in trouble. and he fell out with more than one player while at inter never a good sign. i have got my heart set on ciro ferrara i loved him as a player one of the most underrated italian defenders of the last 20 years
