Napoli’s 3-5-2 vs. AC Milan
By: Neil | March 22nd, 2009When I read that Donadoni is likely to start with a 3-5-2 against Milan I was reminded of the saying, “The more things change the more they stay the same.” After his first full week of training, Don has apparently decided on the same system that Reja used for four years before ditching it in a last gasp effort to save his job. The most common complaint about Reja was that he was tactically naive. Almost nobody in Europe uses the 3-5-2, certainly not any of the successful clubs like Man United, Barcelona, Inter, or Liverpool. Now Don is keeping faith with the system in which Napoli gained all their important victories over the last two years.
To be fair, I have no idea how long Don is going to stick with the 3-5-2. As mentioned in my previous post there are a significant amount of unavailable players, which means his options are very limited. In fact, when you consider that three defenders – Aronica, Rinaudo, and Vitale – are all absent it almost forces him into sticking with three at the back. But the most intriguing part is that tomorrow’s starting lineup will be almost identical to what Reja would have chosen:
Napoli probable lineup: Navarro – Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini – Montervino, Pazienza, Blasi, Hamsik, Datolo – Zalayeta, Lavezzi
Milan also have their injury problems. Just off the top of my head, Gattuso is still out, Abbiati is injured, Ambrosini is suspended, and Kaka is not 100%. Although Milan will be hurt by the loss of three of their character players, there’s still plenty of talent to choose from. Head over to Gianfranco’s Milan offside to get the latest on the Milan lineup and preparation.
There’s also some recent history between the two teams. Last season Milan arrived at the San Paolo looking to keep their hold on 4th place and the last Champions League spot. Napoli played a near perfect match in defeating Milan 3-1 and relegating the Lombardia club to the UEFA Cup. Earlier this season the two teams played a memorable game in Milan with a late Denis own goal giving Milan the three points. Napoli played a really big game after Maggio was sent off late in the first half, and after Iezzo saved a Kaka penalty it seemed like the game was destined for a scoreless draw. Here are the highlights from last November’s encounter:
Napoli will have the support of around 60 000 people inside the San Paolo but still face a difficult match. If you break it down position by position Milan simply have better players. It’s a little bit intimidating when you can leave Ronaldinho on the bench to start the game.
What Napoli needs to do to win:
1) Navarro needs to outplay Dida. Iezzo was sensational in the first meeting this season and we need a repeat performance from Navarro. He’s facing a better and more experience keeper in Dida. The best hope is that Dida makes one of his trademark blunders, but this is asking for a lot of luck.
2) Napoli has to control the buildup play in the midfield. Inzaghi is a great goal poacher but he thrives off of work done by the rest of the team. If Napoli can cut off his supply then Inzaghi will struggle. Pato on the other hand is more dangerous in one vs. one situations. He needs to be watched and given very little space.
3) Lavezzi and Zalayeta need to be on their games. If our attacking duo is chasing the ball all night it could be a long game. They’ll need to conserve energy going forward because they need to defend against Milan’s back four settling on the ball and starting breakouts.
In general, Napoli has to play like without any fear. If you give Milan too much respect they will have an easy night.
This game is the posticipo and will be live at 20:30 CET, 3:30 Eastern and 12:30 Pacific. TV coverage should be very easy to find. If you don’t have a dish and can’t make it out, there should also be plenty of live internet streams. Try www.rojadirecta.org and www.atdhe.net
Check back tomorrow for a report and commentary. Forza Napoli!

the san paolo is such a quality stadium. well at least it wasnt a loss. very worrying he didnt make a sub until the 91st minute though. im more worried about hamsik and lavezzi, when a player has a dip in form thats just natural but when they are shit for an entire half of the season something is very very wrong. lavezzi can run and dribble a bit but cant even pass, shoot or cross?! and hamsik has been a ghost. we need to build our defence around santacroce hes a real talent. lets hope de laurentiis sees this and realises we have no real quality apart from lavezzi (from the 1st half of the season) and santacroce

and i have to say how did maldini keep up with lavezzi?! he actually caught up with him when lavezzi was at full sprint the man is super human

can I say it again– Z Donkey is just SHITE!!! He’s suckier than suck. If we had any finishing we had the 3points. I thought the team showed a lot of heart and I wish that Balsi would have freakin’ punched Beckass right in the chops.
I thought the game plan was pretty good- Play the counter against an older and better team, tire them out in the 2nd half, then go on the attack.
I still don’t like the 352, but a lot of defenders were out so he kind of had to go that way.
Only complaint was that Rusotto wasn’t brought on to run at the aging and tiring Milan back line
We need a finisher, Fabio C., and another mid.
Gosh Z Donkey just sucks

i thought he was alright last season as well. lets just hope we can turn this interest in borriello into something concrete, if he was playing last night he would have buried those chances. 4 names have been mentioned and if we could manage to get 3/4 we would have a good squad. one of the biggest problems is there is no creativity in the middle this team is screaming for a playmaker that would dictate the tempo like d’agostino or cigarini

I used to read and contribute to these forums but the level of intelligence of some people posting on this forum makes me wonder if they know anything about Napoli or football in general.
Neil – You’re the only reason why I do check this site. Pls keep up your informative and factual posts. Well done Napoli. First time since xmas that I saw Napoli play well. Credit to Donadoni. AND If I read another napoli fan bag Lavezzi or Hamsik I will chuck this laptop against the wall b/c if you don’t want them at Napoli I can count another 200 European teams who would want them in their side.Posted from

you tell me 5 clubs that would pay full price for hamsik and lavezzi tony. they have both been shocking the second half of the season. hamsik has been a ghost and lavezzi has lost the ability to pass, shoot and even put in a good cross? fair enough if they can recover some good form before the end of the season but what if the pressure of all the fans, talk of champions league and getting linked to teams like real madrid and juventus have affected them psychologically? you see alot of young players just wilt under the lime light thats why im worried

how many times has lavezzi been compared to maradona the greatest player of all time? your telling me that hasnt affected his game? they even wanted to bring back the No.10 shirt. surely an argentinian would find this added pressure overbearing instead of just being able to develop their own game=lavezzi trying to constantly overdo things like trying to dribble past an entire team. how many times do you see a player out wide waiting for the simple ball to be played and then lavezzi just running at a player, lose the ball or just shoot from outside the box that doesnt go anywhere?
i think its really fucked him up developing as a player

Alex, take it easy. The whole team hasn’t been at its best the last four months and that’s why its’ been difficult for individuals to shine. Give Donadoni some time and I think you’ll see players start to return to their best again.

Vincent, good observations about Napoli’s game plan. I agree it would have been nice to see Russotto get a chance late in the game with lots of space opening up. But there’s lots of time left in the season and Russotto should get his chance.
