“Napoli Want to Win the Trophy”
By: Neil | February 8th, 2012
Napoli’s semi-final opponents Siena are in a Serie A relegation battle and will probably rest some starters in Thursday’s Coppa Italia clash. Napoli’s path to the final is simply a matter of breaking down a team that will stick 10 men behind the ball. Sounds pretty easy but all the pressure is on Napoli. I am hoping for at least a scoring draw in Siena. I don’t think Napoli has to win the away leg, but they have to force Siena to score at the San Paolo and this means getting a draw of 1-1 or higher. We saw the value of Juve’s 2 away goals in the other Coppa semi-final: Milan now have to score twice in Torino as a 1-0 Milan victory would see them crash out on away goals. So a closed, low scoring game could be risky, and instead I’m hoping Napoli will lineup 4-3-3 from the start, create a wide open game, and force Siena to trade goals. Napoli’s superior offensive talent should take over this type of game.
Mazzarri will play the bulk of his preferred starting eleven. With the semi-final being two legs he can get away with resting a couple of players as there is another match at the San Paolo in case things go wrong in Siena. However, since Napoli are taking the competition seriously expect the veterans to get the nod in a big match.
De Sanctis – Campagnaro, Canna, Britos – Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Dossena – Pandev, Hamsik, Cavani
Lavezzi still can’t play twice a week since coming back from injury but he is on the bench (if he doesn’t start) and might come on should Mazzarri need another attacking option. As usual these lineups are complete predictions and are liable to change.
According to reports Siena has not called up Calaio’, Del Grosso, Vitiello, and Rossettini. Meanwhile, Grossi and Parravicini are suspended. I guess Giuseppe Sannino figures he can take at least a point from Roma on Monday night. I don’t know if agree with this: you’re in a Coppa Italia semi-final, and you don’t give your best players a chance to take you to the final? All because a point against Roma might be the difference between Serie A and Serie B? If Siena does go on to be relegated, I doubt the Roma match will be the difference maker. Apparently it’s not just big teams not taking the Coppa seriously: even relegation candidates don’t want this tournament clogging up the fixture list.
This one will be shown live on GOL TV in Canada so I’m off to the bar. If you have a live stream please share it so your fellow internet audience can enjoy the best stream possible.

jon – zuniga has bene playing left wing back..rotating the position with Dossena for the past 2 seasons. I don’t buy the out of position excuse.
If he is so 1 dimensional he shouldnt be in the squad. He takes an eternity to get a cross in..always turning back and forth before hitting the cross straight into a defender. He doesnt play consistently enough and for the money stupid marino paid for him..9m..not good enough.Dossena isn’t much better either. The left back or left midfield position needs to be reinforced. Datolo was a gem in my opinion. Fast, first time crosser something we miss. I hope zuniga can prove me wrong in the next few months and i’ll happily eat my words.

Seba, agreed some bad luck, but against Siena’s B side. Were lucky to get a gift of an own goal and not give up another or 2. I am all for optimism but when was the last time Napoli came out and looked good and won a game? Our recent form leads me to believe that we would be extremely lucky to advance.

-

Dossena is slightly better and more accurate with his crosses, but Zuniga is the only guy other than Lavezzi who can beat and go by a defender with the ball at his feet. When teams are parking the bus creating those spaces is one of the ways to create chances. All of the best chances today came from those 2 guys…

Luigi, it is believable only if you didn’t watch the game and didn’t know who they were playing.

-

And he throws Desanctis under the bus, and gives Vargas a backhanded compliment. A real class act as well.

Su Lippi: “E’ il top, l’allenatore ideale per una piazza ambiziosa come Napoli” – Mazzarri
I think it’s clear he doesn’t want to be at napoli anymore.

-

Seriously, with all due respect, fuck mazzarri.

-

The only optimistic thought I can think of is that without an incredible miracle turn aroud, Mazzarri will be gone next season and with any luck DeLa will be able to get someone better. This team is stagnate right now, the players are good, we just need some fresh new ideas. I doubt such rumors are serious but what would you guys think about Lippi as our new coach. He’s definately won more than Mazzarri.

-

Thank you Sir Walter of what you have accomplished in the past , however it is time to step down , this team needs a change, Lippi wants to coach this team, bring him in!! The players and Fans who onced believe in you have lost faith. At this stage you can’t lead this team to go head to head with Chelsea.I am tired of seeing you bring in Vargas in a lost cause, just like you did with Dumitru and others.Your Defence is tired and worn out and what do you do? you sit out Fernandez , Grava, Britos and Fideleff. One last thing, please stop pointing at your watch……..

Zuinga’s attacking problems are a microcosm of the whole team… so much athleticism, plenty of ability, but tragically under productive and wasteful with the all important final ball
Napoli played their hearts out, but they just don’t know how to create high quality chances. Siena got 3 quality chances and converted 2, with Mannini’s shot almost going in but flying just over the bar.
Napoli had so much of the ball, but played around the perimeter and couldn’t do anything inside the 18 yard box. Mazzarri’s tactics are not innovative at all – they are wasteful and make good attacking players look very average.
The team looked sick with a 3 man backline – too often Aronica or another player just hoofed the ball upfield and hoped for the best. When Mazzarri switched to a 4-3-3 when the score was 1-0 the offence started to play better – Zunigaa and Maggio could take the ball up the wing and make better use of the midfielders.
Napoli deservedly lost a game they could have won comfortably.

This must be viewed to feel better about the game!!!

“We’ve been playing every three days non-stop since the start of the season, so it’s only natural to lose a little sharpness.”- Mazzari Is this guy kidding me? First of all, that is NOT true and secondly we have the depth to competer in EVERY game..FU Mazzari

-

Neil, I agree with your comment regarding Zuniga.Just read that Chavez has been loaned out, what was the point of getting him in the first place, the same might happen with Fideleff.Btw , looking forward in hearing some comments from our scooter legend….

-

pointless bringing in these second tier foreigners. its actually ridiculous!
insigne should be on the bench getting minutes every game! but not to worry we have vargas lighting up serie a

Looks like we are not the only ones that are sensing that something is wrong..

-

Did you guys read this…that Mazzarri is on the list if Moratti looks for a new coach.
I told my buddy who is a Juve fan and he said that Maz would ruin that team.
Mazz doesn’t have the element of surprise anymore and teams have figured him out. He’s a one trick pony and a man full of excuses.

-

Imo, we should sit out Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Maggio and Cavani against Chievo. I would bring in Vargas, Dossena,Britos and Fernandez.

-

Boys , I would really like to have your input on the following: who would you name as a coach if Mazzarri would step down?
I would like to see Zeman….

-

oops sorry, i meant who would you like as a …

-

I nominate Neil for the next Napoli coach.

-

Capello or Lippi

-

I have a suspicions DeLa is waiting to get rid of Mazzamerda until he has a successor in line. Honestly, I don’t see us getting Cappello, Lippi, Ancelotti, or Mancini caliber coach. I believe we will go after a Ranieri, Guidolin, or Zeman caliber coach. In my opinion Dela will wait till a coach that fits our system becomes free before he lets Mazzamerda go.

-

IMO Ranieri, Guidolin and Zeman are of the same calibre as Mazzari, little European experience and the inability to effectively rotate players in and out for this purpose. Ranieri does have a ton of experience but hasn’t won anything in years. Its a wonder he keeps getting these high profile jobs in the first place (Inter, Roma, Juve in last 4yrs?)
I would love to see Spaletti too.
