Napoli vs. Torino: Short Preview
By: Neil | May 16th, 2009Looking at Torino’s roster and the talent available, I’m stunned that they’re still fighting for their Serie A lives. When Gianni De Biasi was replaced by Walter Novellino I thought they would begin a slow but steady climb out of the relegation zone. Almost six months later, Novellino has been replaced by Giancarlo Camolese and the Granata are still in 17th, just one point ahead of 18th place Bologna.
The club is led by captain and creative midfielder Alesandro Rosina. The left footer is quick, strong on the ball, and is great from set pieces. Injuries have limited his season, and he has just four goals, all from the penalty spot. In fact, goalscoring has been Torino’s problem all year long. With just 31 goals scored, Torino are second last in Serie A with only Reggina scoring fewer. Leading scorer Rolando Bianchi has 7 goals, including one penalty. In other words, outside of winning penalties Torino is going to have a tough time scoring goals.
Defensively the club is led by centre back Cesare Natali, whose fine play this season has him linked with a number of bigger clubs. Goalkeeper Matteo Sereni is returning from suspension to provide a reliable veteran presence between the sticks.
Torino also has a number of good young players. Midfielder Ignazio Abate is co-owned with Milan, Swiss midfielder Blerim Dzemaili is on loan from Bolton Wanderers, and there’s also the Nigerian-Italian Angelo Ogbonna, and defender Matteo Rubin. When you add this group of young players with experienced veterens like Sereni, Eugenio Corini, Aimo Diana, and Simone Barone, it’s a small miracle that the team is struggling so much. I haven’t had the opportunity to watch Torino much recently, so I can’t really tell where things are going wrong on the field. My guess is that instability on the ownership/management front has affected on field play.
Torino’s recent form is unspectacular. The club has managed two wins in their last five games, but the two victories were at home to Siena and Catania. While no game in Serie A is easy, playing clubs in the lower half but not in relegation danger – like Siena and Catania – is always preferable at this time of year.
As for Napoli, their last home game was a hugely entertaining and satisfying 1-0 win over not yet champions Inter. In fact, since Donadoni became manager the Vesuviani are unbeaten at home. It’s been a mini-revival of Napoli’s early season home form, when the San Paolo witnessed five straight victories before Cagliari earned a 2-2 draw.
The injury list has the usual names: Iezzo, Maggio, Gargano, Rinaudo, and Lavezzi. El Pocho could return next week against Catania, but the others are spectators for the rest of the season. Vitale is suspended after his 5th yellow last Sunday. Zalayeta is thankfully benched.
Look for Donadoni to continue experimenting and evaluating some of Napoli’s fringe players. With so many regulars missing the lineup should look something like:
Navarro – Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini – Montervino, Blasi, Bogliacino, Datolo/Hamsik, Mannini – Denis, Pia.
Aronica might be chosen instead of Santacroce, and there could be other surprises as well. If Hamsik starts I’d like to see him get more involved right from the opening whistle, but aggression is not one of his strengths.
I’m expecting a Napoli win on Sunday. If the team has the same calm approach as against Inter it shouldn’t be difficult playing a Torino side that has disappointed this season. Let’s hope Napoli doesn’t get trapped into the same level of desperation that often happens when facing a team that could be relegated. I don’t want to see a repeat of the last 15 minutes against Lecce when Napoli was content to sit back and let Lecce take chance after chance at winning the game.

Since neither side can score, I am going with a 1-0 Napoli win. I am really hoping to end the season on a good note and get some good evaluations on our wants and needs for next stagione. Let’s see what James Dean, Rusotto, Pia, etc… can do for the last 3 games. I already have it in my mind who needs to go.

russotto and pia should start upfront unless lavezzi is fit. z-donkey and denis have failed miserably they shouldnt even have the right to wear the shirt. especially zalayeta hes publicly disgraced the club.
the primavera won 3-1 against genoa today as well im looking forward to this ciano lad breaking through to the first team in the years to come hes scoring a lot of goals hopefully he can make the step up in quality

nice finish from bianchi but horrible defending especially cannavaro

very nice free kick. napoli are playing like shite in defence

well what can you say about that? any of you who watched that and still think hamsik should stay are literally crazy. he was awful like he has been since before christmas. what marino has bought in the last couple of seasons is an absolute disgrace. some of players on the squad are midtable serie b players never mind trying to qualify for europe.
i felt a little bit sorry for p.cannavaro did anyone else hear the boos and whistles everytime he touched the ball? i thought he was going to cry. the fans have every right to boo the players they were an absolute shambles. i think they singled out paolo because hes neapolitan, and the captain but he shows no passion and is a terrible leader. the difference between him and montervino is ridiculous.
watched the juve-atalanta highlights cigarini looked quality, if napoli loses out over garics then marino is a big a fool as he is fat and greedy. who knows maybe thats where all the moneys gone.
one more thing, is donadoni the man for the job? didnt think he was before and i certainly dont think he is now

I just can’t figure out what is wrong with this team We just pretty much suck week after week except for playing Inter.
Hamsik is a f’n disgrace. It’s so obvious he wants out
It’s sad when Pia is our best forward.
I wish the fans would knock off the booing and whistling of the players, especially Cannavaro. Maybe they should be extra supportive. At least we are clear of relegation in our 2nd season back in Serie A.
But, I am still disappointed with how the season has gone after the break.
And I really am questioning if Donadoni is the right man for this job

And another thing, if our “tifosi” keep jeering players like Cannavaro, who is going to want to come play for Napoli next season?

the team needs a leader more than anything. i think they made paolo the scapegoat because they expect alot more from him. hes a really bad captain i think thats why im so shocked that even now de laurentiis wont sign fabio.
donadoni sounds like a lot of loser managers saying things like we didnt deserve to lose, the lads played well etc. ive heard that all season and its led to boro getting relegated. give donadoni next season, if he cant do a good job bring in ferrara he will know how to handle napoli

ferrara is uhm……busy

best of luck to him. a king among men is our ciro
Posted from

There goes our chance of gettin him. Better not even thinnk about loser Ranieri if Don gets the sack
Posted from

-

i think ranieri is better than donadoni.

so juventus has taken ciro and now fabio officially. why de laurentiis didnt sign both of these men is beyond me.

hopefully this deal can be completed in the next couple of weeks. who said italians dont want to play for napoli?
still in need of a defender that can partner santacroce in defence dont feel p.cannavaro is good enough to take napoli to the next levelPosted from

santacroce in exchange for bocchetti?!! i dont like that at all. bocchetti to partner fabiano would be amazing

Seeing Cannavaro return to f’n Juve and not Napoli is a disgrace.

ferrara and cannavaro to Juve..unbelievable..that should have been Napoli..dumb a$$ Marino. Hopefully he can pull off Cigarini and Borriello at least

Seeing Cannavaro return to f’n Juve and not Napoli is a disgrace.
It is a disgrace. Maybe we can send him on loan for the year/contract.

im still pissed off that marino didnt buy bocchetti when he was actually offered him last season. instead he chose aronica?! fabiano and salvatore would of made a mean defensive partnership. if marino can pull off the signings of cigarini and borriello i would be very pleased. still need another quality defender though… f.cannavaro would of been perfect
