Napoli – Siena mini preview

By: Neil | December 6th, 2008

Because of Napoli’s difficult away schedule in November, and our 95th minute slip up the last home came against Cagliari, the Siena game becomes much more important than it normally would be. While Napoli should be winning most home games against teams lower in the standings, this one in particular becomes a must win game.

Siena is enjoying a great spell right now, having picked up 10 points from their last 5 games. Overall, they sit in 12th place in Serie A with a record of 5-4-5 for 19 points. However, as is common in football, most of their success has been at home, where they are still undefeated and have conceded only 2 goals in 7 matches. For an in depth look at Siena, visit Matthew’s blog at the Siena Offside.

Notable players on Siena include keeper Gianluca Curci, who was displaced at Roma by Alexandre Doni. Curci has been capped 21 times by the Azzurrini, and was once regarded as the most promising young Italian portiere. There is also midfielder Daniele Galloppa, who has been frequently scouted by Napoli for a possible move in the January market. Here is an interview with defender Daniele Portanova who talks about Siena’s confidence this season.

For the Partenopei Edy Reja has a full squad to choose from, with the only doubt defender Matteo Contini. I haven’t been able to find out exactly what’s wrong with him, but given his performance against Cagliari I don’t mind Aronica getting a few games in, even though he really isn’t much better. It’s been confirmed that Santacroce will play Sunday even though he had the flu earlier this week. And German Denis will almost certainly start alongside Lavezzi.

Napoli probable lineup: Iezzo – Santacroce, Cannavaro, Aronica – Maggio, Blasi, Gargano, Hamsik, Mannini – Denis, Lavezzi

Finally, there is an interesting story emerging from tutto mercato web: the Slovenian football federation apparently wants Reja to be Slovenia’s next manager. Reja is from Gorizia, which is pretty close to the Slovenian border, and the article mentions that Slovenia is his “favourite vacation land.” Also, I’ve seen Reja referred to as an Italian-Slovenian. It’s plausible that after more than four seasons at Napoli, Reja could make a smooth transition to lead Slovenia.

I just finished reading “Capello: Portrait of a Winner.”
Apparently Fabio and Edy are extremely close friends, both coming from the extreme North of Italy. I know that Capello was not always that popular with many of his players, but his winning record speaks for itself. Couldn’t he have imparted some of his wisdom to Reja? Do you think that there’s any merit to the proposition that allenatori from the North have problems relating to–or getting the best from–Southern players? I’m thinking of Capello’s troubles with Cassano (Barese)and Reja’s falling out with Calaio` (Siciliano).

    Goodbye Reja!

Must win tomorrow, but could be tough since Siena are a tough nut to crack

There’s no doubt that Reja looks up to Capello… if I remember correctly, Capello used a 3-5-2 at Roma, including 2001 when they won the Scudetto and 2002 when they finished one point behind Juve. But you could argue that those Roma teams had great players who could have won using any formation.

I don’t think allenatori from the north have trouble relating to southern players. It’s Capello and Reja’s strict discipline system that causes players to be frozen out, not people’s places of origin. As for the two you mentioned, Cassano has given every manager he’s had problems, and Calaio was not a problem for Reja until his form dropped last season.

Although the two managers have similar approaches, Capello is world class while Reja’s best season is taking Napoli to an Intertoto spot. They have the same philosophies, but Capello clearly has abilities that Reja will never have.

Reja’s best season is taking Napoli to an Intertoto spot.

Reja also has severely limited resources compared to what Capello has had to work with.

more and more i watch the barcelona games and they are truly playing some of the best calcio i have ever seen and i wonder if its the youthful winning mentality of pep guardiola who was part of that dream team, then i wonder if you brought in ciro ferrara as coach he could have the same affect as he is learning from lippi (not a better teacher out there) and of course ciro was a part of the grande napoli team of the 80s and one of the best juve teams in recent history and has won everything at club level. and of course he is napolitano. i really believe he could step up to the next level with napoli

Nice 3 points. I knew Siena would be a tough game, they are a nice compact team. Good to grind out some games when needed. Maggio looked better as well.

I would love to see Ferrara as manager if we couldn’t get Lippi. LOL
