Napoli Midweek Update
By: Neil | January 21st, 2009According to Mirko Savini it was a fallout with Marino, not Reja, that led to him being frozen out since the start of the season. The 29 year old defender was sold to Palermo yesterday in Napoli’s first transaction in the mercato. I have not been able to find any financial details, which means it was probably an insignificant amount of money. Napoli’s goal was to get Savini off the roster, and that has been accomplished.
I had assumed it was a disagreement with Reja that led to Savini being frozen out, but the ex-Fiorentina player says there was a difference of opinion with the director of sport.
Last season Savini featured mainly as a left wing-back for Napoli, but with the arrival of Mannini last January and Maggio in the summer there was little chance of him playing in those spots again this year. I found it intersting that he considers himself fundamentally a central defender. I assumed that since he was playing at left wing-back he was naturally a left full-back, but apparently he was playing out of position most or all of his time at Napoli. I was never big on Savini because he had limited offensive skills, but he was competent on defence and played hard to earn a jersey. It will be interesting to see how he performs in a setup that is more suited to his skills.
The rumour mill has Napoli poised to acquire Brescia’s attacking midfielder Savio Nsereko. There is lots of competition for the player, and West Ham United’s Italian director Gianluca Nani has also been closely following the German youth player. Nsereko has been playing as a striker for Brescia, and could play either alongside Lavezzi or as one of the five midfielders.
There are also reports that Hamsik is unsettled at Napoli and will be looking for an exit unless the team qualifies for the Champions League. In addition to Inter and Man City being interested, Juve has also shown interest with Vincenzo Iaquinta being offered with a pile of cash. Incidently, I’ve read in the past that Marino is not interested in Iaquinta, so that deal looks improbable. In any case, the red card for protesting was very unlike Hamsik. His performances the last couple of months, like the rest of the team, have not been his best. I’d love to know what he said that earned him a straight red card. His two game suspension will give Mariano Bogliacino a chance to show his qualities after an ankle injury threatened to spoil his season.
Also on the absentee front, Iezzo will not return for the Roma game. With Navarro also injured, Gianello will be entrusted with keeping Napoli’s unbeaten streak at the San Paolo alive. On his day Gianello has a lot of quality, but I don’t trust him as much as Napoli’s other two goalies. In other news, Lavezzi was fined 1500 euros for his dive against Chievo last week. It’s maybe the only time over the last year and a half I’ve seen Lavezzi go down without any contact. Hopefully he learns from his mistake.
Apparently Napoli is no longer interested in Polish defender Jodlowiec. Multiple sources reported the deal as being done, so there’s either some inaccurate info in the media or I don’t know enough Italian to understand the current story. This whole thing doesn’t make sense, as Savini’s departure just opened up a free roster spot on defence.
And it appears the Roma game on Sunday won’t be televised. I couldn’t find it at RAI, Fox Soccer Channel, or GOL TV. It looks like I’ll have to do with another internet feed.
The next couple of weeks figure to be quite busy. Not only is the mercato closing in ten days, but Napoli have two midweek games coming up: a Serie A game against Fiorentina next week, and a Coppa Italia quarter final against Juventus the following week. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep the posts coming as fast as the events unfold.

if we sell hamsik we should go for buonanotte or ideally rosina if torino get relegated. im not sold on nsereko if he was that good then clubs would be snapping him up although you could say the same about hamsik and santacroce. if hamsik is indeed unhappy then i say sell him for alot sooner rather than later and bring in cigarini and a quality striker, floccari would be my 1st choice and change the formation but thats never going to happen

That’s what I have been saying my brother. Hamsik is very good, but the one piece I would sell for the right price. Like I said, can’t put my finger on why just a gut feeling about his attitude.
Floccari would be sweeeeeet upfront with Lavezzi! And he’s Italiano!!!

my thinking is a 4-3-3
iezzo
vitale-santacroce-cannavaro-maggiothen
cigarini-blasi-gargano
and then lavezzi behind
russotto-floccari
the defence has the mix of tough tackling paolo and more skillful fabiano, vitale is getting better and is young, maggio can do his thing.
the midfield blasi and gargano can do their thing while cigarini can orchestrate everything, while lavezzi can run onto his through balls release floccari and russotto who can go on and score! and floccari is good with his head. that is the perfect balance to a team and the 3 forwards are all skillful players that are inventive as well.Posted from

It seems like ever since Hamsik was robbed at gunpoint he has not been the same player. Am I wrong in this assesment? As far as rhe game goes, to me, what he did to the ref shows a lack of composure on his part. I consider him one of the young leaders of the team and he should know that with games coming up against Roma, Fiorentina and Juve (Coppa), that the Chievo game should have been a tune up. I swea5r all this talk of Champions league has gone to their head. Now with players out, banged up..we will see the depth ( or lack thereof) in Naploi. I hope this is a wake up call for the players that while they are good..they are not CL good. But I think they can do some damage in Uefa. baby steps guys. This is where I think a good coach can keep them grounded.

he was starting too look a bit shady before he got robbed, im sure that didnt help though. the problem i have with all this talk of not mentioning the champions league is, if i was a player and had the chance too play in the champions league i would try my hardest in every game against every team. its the same thing with liverpool they have a chance of winning the league for the first time in years and in some games they just look like they dont give a fuck. a team needs a coach that keeps them grounded but gets them playing their hardest every game.
and why i keep mentioning ferrara, is look at guardiola he only coached the youth team at barca and look at what hes done for barcelona a club that was in deep crisis and full of egos. we need a manager that can fire players up away from home when they are a goal down etc and i dont think reja is the man for it.
ferrara is similar to guardiola as in he is a leader and has won it all as a player giving him that unique quality in a manager that relates to a team. and above all he is napoletano and won scudetti and uefa cup with napoli as wellPosted from

Mario, thanks for the TV update.
Alex, I think you’re right, Hamsik had some average games even before the incident. But I still want to hold on to him as long as possible.

i cant believe a roma fan would even post anything remotely positive on a napoli fan page and vice versa. hatred is the only word that describes what napoletani feel towards romani

It’s called civility and good sportsmanship, Alex. Although a healthy dose of rivalry keeps match-ups like these exciting, as fans we should also remember that in a way (how ever minutely) we are representing the club when we post on each other’s blogs/sites. Persistent use of personal insults and harsh language only serve to diminish your credibility.
In any case, I do look forward to tomorrow’s match-up. I will be rooting for Roma, but I do enjoy Napoli’s exciting football and have a lot of respect for Reja. Good luck, and may the best team win.Posted from

there is absolutely no civility when it comes to napoli-roma. this is a derby game! this is two teams and two cities that absolutely despise eachother. take that weak shit elsewhere mate

Alex, it’s your comments that are weak. This is a football game, not a loss of civility. I have no doubt the Napoli players will fight hard tomorrow, but for the most part they are respectful of their opponents and the game. Napoli fans can do the same – support our team as forcefully as we can without being disrespectful. Your mindset is small and you can’t seem to control your emotions.
Yes, it’s true the teams don’t like each other – that’s the nature of competitive football. But talking about how hatred is normal for these kinds of games isn’t productive.
