Napoli – Inter Live Blog
By: Neil | January 25th, 2012Napoli’s lineup is very uncertain. Some reports have Campagnaro being rested and Fernandez in, other have Hugo Boss starting. Other reports have Dzemaili in and Inler resting, and with Cavani and Lavezzi confirmed the third tenor will be one of Hamsik or Pandev. Zuniga looks certain to start in place of Dossena.
De Sanctis – Campagnaro/Fernandez, Cannavaro, Aronica – Maggio, Gargano, Inler/Dzemaili, Zuniga – Hamsik/Pandev, Lavezzi – Cavani
Inter is missing a whole bunch of players, but they have plenty of depth and their lineup is still very strong. Nagatomo, Stankovic, Diego Forlan, and Coutinho all have some kind of injury while Sully Muntari is at the ANC with Ghana. There are also reports that Lucio and Pazzini are being left out of the squad, but it’s not clear why… perhapds Ranieri is properly rotating his squad? Julio Cesar could also get some rest
Castellazzi – Maicon, Ranocchia, Cordoba, Chivu – Zanetti, Thiago Motta, Cambiasso, Alvarez – Sneijder, Milito
Other players for Ranieri to consider are Walter Samuel, Faraoni, John Mikel Obi, Andrea Poli, Mauro Zarate, and Luc Castaignos. It’s incredible how many good players Inter have and it makes their slow start to the Serie A season all the more shocking. Inter have 2 more Serie A losses than Napoli, but their winning streak has seen them climb back into the top 4 and they are more likely than Udinese and Lazio to join Juve and Milan in the title race.
Just like last season’s Coppa Italia quarter final, this match should be quite entertaining. Napoli want sporting revenge for last season’s Coppa elimination while Inter were slightly embarrassed 3-0 by Napoli back in October. Even if Inter rests players, they are playing to win every competition they enter and Ranieri has clearly sorted out some of the early season problems. But don’t count Napoli out. They have a habit of showing up in big games and surprising the opposing teams. Now that El Pocho is back there are no major absentees, and it’s a case of Mazzarri managing the team properly to get the best results. Mazzarri is running out of excuses; Napoli have a full and healthy lineup and although it’s a midweek game Inter played on the weekend too. And they actually won their game, a 2-1 decision over Lazio at the San Siro whereas Napoli stuggled to sneak a 1-1 draw at Siena.
I’m predicting that a calm and concentrated Napoli will show up and Inter will have quite a game on their hands. Look for a repeat of last season’s nailbiting Coppa encounter with no more than a goal separating the teams. And if it goes to extra time or a shootout, it’s anybody’s game. Actually I have to favour Inter in a shootout, but anything can happen.
Match will be shown live on ESPN3 but I can’t find any TV coverage in Canada: Fox Soccer is showing Carling Cup 2nd leg, Liverpool vs. Man City and I couldn’t find TV listings for RAI International. I’m actually off work today, so if you know how I can watch the game other than a choppy internet stream please let me know.

C’mon Alan! How can Mazzarri justify using the fatigue card if he actually rotates the defense??

If you want to put things into perspective you also have to take into account that Napoli are in the last 16 of UCL after eliminating Man City (currently top of the EPL) and getting out of the group of death.
On a related note, Mazzari has been suspended for both legs of the Chelsea fixture for man handling that Villareal player on matchday 6. Good news or bad news?

-

mario thats all well and good but napoli wont win the champions league and look less than likely to qualify for next season. until the club is in a postion to get quite far in that tournament and compete in the league i would take doing well in the league everytime
its a delicate time in the rise of napoli all it takes is not qualifying, a couple of key players leaving and we end up like fiorentina…

-

Looks like Mazz may not be on the sidelines for Chelsea: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2914/champions-league/2012/01/26/2868274/napolis-walter-mazzarri-to-miss-champions-league-clashes-against-

I wouldn’t give back the emotions I felt over the last 6 UCL games for ten 3rd place finishes. Regardless of how we finish this year, the experience gained by players, fans and the city of Naples during the last couple of months are priceless. Really, what is point of qualifying for UCL if you aren’t going to go out there balls to the wall and give it all that you’ve got?

-

Cavani is already 10th all time in scoring for Napoli, it took him only 1.5 seasons. Only 30 away from El Pibe de Oro. Also, f we get pasted Siena, which we should due to the two legs we will play either Juve or Milan

-

Yea with Milan winning today it pretty much guarantees that Napoli will get a Europa spot if we beat Siena in the semifinals… That’s because a Europa spot automatically goes to the coppa Italia winner, however, if the winner has already qualified for Europe through the league (as Milan and Juve most certainly will), then the Europa spot goes to the runner up… If things don’t get better in the league in the next 4-5 weeks, we may see Napoli in a situation where it will make sense to just concede the league and go balls to the wall in both the Coppa and Champions league.. it will be interesting to see how Mazz approaches this..

-

i suppose so mario but thats what the fiorentina fans where saying…
much prefer napoli to be at the top longer and not qualifying for the champs league next season could be a major blow in terms of bringing in a high class coach and players
plus its going to be a lot harder battling juve, milan, inter, roma, udinese and whoever else for the top 3 spots
coppa should be a top priority and would hopefully keep players plus you get a little badge on the shirt!

-

I will definitely be buying any Napoli shirt with ANY type of badge on it. I mean you can still buy shirts from ‘89 just because of that Italian flag. Any silverware is better than no silverware, no matter how insignificant (like the FIFA club world cup).

The problem is the mentality that we had to choose between the CL and serie A. I find this very small thinking and the fact of the matter is that the past 2 weeks have basically dispelled that notion. We tied to freaking Bologna at home last week. There was no CL games that caused this. We then followed up with another tie at Siena the following week, again with no CL to blame. Had we won these two matches, we’re looking at a much better position in Serie A within striking distance of 3rd place.
I just don’t buy that the CL caused us problems at Chievo, Cantania, Parma, etc. It’s been repeated ad nauseum on these forums that the problem is that the little teams have figured us out, and all play a very specific tactic to neuter our strengths. The fact that Mazz has still not figured out a way around this is a much bigger problem than any CL stress!!

Given the season we had last season..this season was always going to be difficult as people’s expectations were going to be higher.
Champions League – Has been brilliant. Like Mario mentioned…I will also never forget the emotions of 1. Making the CL in the first place (when we drew 1-1 with Inter) and 2. Matching it with the likes of Bayern, Man City and Villareal and now with a shot at Chelsea.
Coppa Italia – In the Semi’s in a very winnable tie..We should make the final…which may give us our first piece of Silverware in ages and a ticket to Europa.
League – Been disappointing. To raise our hopes with wins against the likes of Milan, Inter, Udinese etc, only to be frustrated with not beating the lower likes….I think the main problem here is squad rotation. Mazzari continually plays the same 11 with perhaps 1 change…the players who are becoming fatigued look to the league for a temporary rest with the mindset that any current point deficit can be made up in the 2nd half of the season.Looking back on it now..We perhaps should lowered our expectations. To finish top 3 again this season whilst progressing through the CL and making a run in the Coppa may be too much to ask for. Especially considering Juve don’t have any Euro commitments, Milan and Inter are always at the top, Udinese/Lazio/Roma are always looking to snatch the 3rd CL spot..if Napoli do finish top 3, whilst making the qtrs of the CL and making the Coppa Italia final Mazzari should be handed a huge pay rise.
The priorities will change month to month. If we do make it past Chelsea and into the Coppa Italia final.. the league will have to take least priority because the chance to win the CL or Coppa Italia doesn’t come around very happen. If the team doesn’t qualify for Europe next season..an all-out assault (like Juve this season) should be made on the scudetto next season!.

Mario — of course the emotions and the experience gained are pricless. That’s why it’s imperative to finish as high as possible in the league again. I think we could be playing better in Serie A without neglecting the Champions League. I would have taken a group stage elimination to stay within a stone’s throw of the top 3 again. But that’s just me – every Napoli fan has his or her own priorities.
The priorities do seem to keep changing, and in the end we could be left with just a round of 16 CL showing if we don’t get past Chelsea. I have no problem with Napoli’s current 7th place in Serie A. The problem is about how the team is playing to get that 7th spot. The potential for more is there, it’s just not being realized because Mazzarri has little experience balancing these types of games. And the weaker efforts vs. the smaller clubs.
I agree the Coppa has to take priority now… Napoli has a real shot at a trophy, and the winner of Napoli-Siena will claim the Coppa spot in Europe (I can’t see Juve or Milan falling out of the top 5) So if the Europa League is reached through the Coppa, then the Serie A form is irrelevant – Napoli could finish anywhere from 4th to 9th or so.
If Mazzarri planned things this way, then I think he is smarter than we are giving him credit for. But right now the problems in Serie A have been covered up by a couple massive wins in the CL and the Coppa win over Inter. It’s great for now, but we want Napoli to be just as competitive over the next few seasons – and not an aging core of players who can’t compete in Serie A

boggles the mind we go for players like britos and fideleff over quality…

Everyone is forgetting one major point. If we win the champions league this year, we automatically qualify for next year! So we can still make champions league year (Just kidding, kind of).
As long as we keep our players during the summer, I would not consider this season a step back. Look at Tottenham
2009/2010- 4th place finish- champions league
2010/2011- Great run in champions league- beat Milan and advanced to quarter finals vs Madrid
-5th place finish- Europa League2011/2012- 3rd place currently and playing very well.
I agree though, we wouldn’t have to make this comparison if we merely beat the lower rated teams like we should have.

Its a joke just saying that because he will probably end up sold

Check out his latest goal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpm5OUerQv0&feature=player_embeddedThis kid is the real deal. Pescara are currently in 1st, which means either way this kid will probably be playing in Serie A next year, hopefully wearing a Napoli shirt.

-

Wow awesome goal this kid is great!!

-

first of all that goal was amazing second of all i cant believe the black keys are on in an italian football highlights show
how much more does a player have to provde he is ready for a chance with a his club???!!!
any other country in the world he would be in the 1st team being managed properly he has unreal potential but they want to loan him out again next year??!

-

@Matteo: Insigne is alredy a Napoli player, he is at Pescara on loan, hope he will be back during the summer, he is an ultimate talent. (another next Maradona
)Btw, I love this blog, great community, good posts. Forza Napoli!
ervin from Hungary

Ervin, i see that we just signed Novothy Soma. Being from Hungary do you have any knowledge of him?

-

@tom: Not so much, but he is a very talented striker (or left side forward). 17 yrs old, played in the third division in Hungary and he is invited to the U19 national team. He is at Naples on loan for a half year and a +5 year option. It would be a huge honor for me, if a hungarian player would play in the Napoli first team, but its a very hard work to reach.
Here is a video about him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-s3IuI8OowWe have a Napoli blog too, we write in hungarian, so its impossible to read for you guys, but check how you like the outfit pls.
