Napoli 3 Reggina 0: Ode to German Denis

By: Neil | October 30th, 2008

It is very easy to overlook a game like this when you’re about to play AC Milan the following weekend. But Napoli showed a maturity that was too often missing last year against the smaller teams. We did the job early, and went on cruise control for the rest of the game. Although German Denis bagged a hat trick, the whole team played well and our offence is starting to involve all of our attacking players instead of being a one or two man show.

Denis is now Napoli’s leading scorer with 5 goals in 9 games (Bologna, Genoa, Reggina 3) and he’s starting to look like the classic finisher that has been missing from the Napoli attack in the last two years. The only down side with this kind of player, once termed a “fox in the box” by Arsene Wenger, is that they don’t offer much else besides finishing. In Italy they’re called “paintbrush” strikers, but most of them do a little more than apply the finishing touch. In any case, if classic finishers for whatever reason aren’t scoring, they don’t contribute much. That is probably why everyone thought Denis was struggling when he first joined Napoli. But for me he illustrates the saying that form is temporary, but class is permanent. It took him a while to find his form, but now that he’s started scoring regularly look for him to pile up the goals. At the beginning of the season, he set himself a target of 10 goals. Already Denis is half way there even though the season is only 1/4 of the way done, and he hasn’t started every game.

Game notes: Cannavaro returned from injury and took his place as captain. Santacroce had a muscle problem and was nearly rested for the Milan game, but Reja didn’t want to take any chances by leaving him on the bench. He was taken out after 68 minutes. Apparently Barcelona are going to make a massive bid for Santacroce, but if De Laurentiis turned down piles of money for Hamsik and Lavezzi then Santacroce is going nowhere as well.

I’m going to do a proper preview for the Milan game on Saturday, but the Italian press is already claiming that if Napoli can win this game then we’ll be legitimate Scudetto competitors. I’m not so sure, but what’s the harm in trying? In the big leagues – England, Italy, and Spain – the teams that get the 3rd and 4th Champions League spot usually have title ambitions, so maybe we’ll have to play for a Scudetto in order to end up in the Champions League. So far the team hasn’t showed any major weaknesses, and without midweek European games to distract us, hopefully we can display the same amount of sharpness in April and May that we have now.

I think Napoli are indeed a force to be reckon with currently…Hamsik to me is pretty damn good…and now that Denis is finishing and Lavezzi is shaping up even more…Napoli will have a very high chance of european football…all the best against Milan!!

Only problem could be if injuries sneak up. Not having Lavezzi or Hamsik for a significant amount of time would hurt in a CL spot push.

Agreed Vincent. Napoli don’t have a whole lot of depth. Maybe one or two signings in January could really help out.

It’s very difficult for any team not to be affected by the loss of its star players to injury. I agree our depth is weaker than some other teams, but is buying players in January the solution? Haven’t we already bought depth players like Rinaudo, Pazienza, Navarro, etc?

I’m hoping we can keep going without any major injuries.

I would like to see Russotto get some PT in these types of games it would help him develop. It was the perfect opportunity with a weak opponent at home, even if it’s just a few minutes at the end of the game it could help

Neil, my opinion is that depth is necessary for a decent challenge for the title. It is very rare that star players (especially forwards) don’t get injured. It is clear that defenders target him, and Napoli need to be able to function if he or Hamsik are out. I’m not saying we can’t, but it does make it a whole lot harder.

Are you going to draw up a preview for the Milan match?

i forget about russotto! he is going to be good player he will get playing time soon enough. napoli in a couple of years are going to be a super team as long as marino keeps getting in the players of such quality. and fabio should definitely come back next summer imagine the mentor he could be for santacroce and to see him and paolo with eachother would be a great thing for calcio!

Jake, I agree that depth is necessary. The problem is if you buy a player almost as good as Lavezzi for cover, that player will want to start and won’t be happy with a bench role. Sometimes a team’s biggest problem is that the bench players aren’t happy, and Reja just exiles players like that (Dalla Bona)

I’m also wondering why Russotto doesn’t get more opportunities.

Yes, I will draw up a preview for the Milan match tomorrow.

Mark, you couldn’t have said it better. Russotto needs experience, as he could be a key answer to some of the depth issues we’re talking about. And what a great time to do that at home, winning big, with plenty of time left. What can you say…another Reja mistake.

you cant say anything negative about reja hes taken you from hell to the gates of heaven and now hes knocking to come in from c1 to possible champions league in such a short space of time is madness

Yeah…..considering Reja was there in C1 and how well Napoli is doing this year..I mean if you guys got top of the table, that’d be good enough considering recent history, but I certainly think you’ll go farther than that.
