Napoli 3 Atalanta 1

By: Neil | April 12th, 2009

No, this wasn’t the final score, but the final count for shots on goal. If every shot on net had gone in – and with Navarro in goal that was always a possibility for Atalanta – there were still 3 Serie A games last weekend with more goals. To be honest, I’m still looking for confirmation that the match actually took place. My live internet feed went down at halftime, and I thought they might have called the game off because nothing was taking place on the field. It was so bad I’m not even going to post any highlights this week. If you want to look over a few minutes of a 0-0 game with no offense or defence, you can go to youtube yourself.

I was hoping that Napoli could finish off the season strong. Maybe finish a few points shy of Europe, and then at the end we could tell ourselves that if just one or two games had gone differently we’d be back in Europe next season. But this is looking less and less likely. The Don is turning into a draw specialist, which is not good for the points total. In the four games since he took over, Napoli has accumulated four draws. If we had lost two of those, but won the other two, Napoli would have six points and be looking at the table to see which teams need to be caught. As it is, we’re still looking for our first win under the Don. A few blogs ago I wrote that Donadoni would turn many of Napoli’s losses into draws, but I never imagined he’d turn some wins into draws as well. This game was there for the taking, and Napoli was content to play a football version of endgame where the same chess pieces are moved around in a circle. I was hoping for one clumsy challenge that might spark some extra curricular activities, anything that would make the game remotely worth watching. But out of our two enforcers, Contini was suspended for five yellows, and it was Blasi’s first game back from a similar suspension.

Napoli’s three shots on net over 90 minutes averages to one shot on net every thirty minutes. In a thirty minute time frame, Napoli and Atalanta averaged 1.33 shots on net. By comparison, in a thirty-five minute time frame in today’s Reggina-Udinese match, there was an Udinese missed penalty, a Reggina sending off, a Reggina missed penalty, and then two late strikes from Floro Flores (ironically a Napoli native) to give Udinese a smash and grab win.

Let’s just all forget about this one, and eagerly await next week’s trip to Cagliari, which will be more exciting provided there is a kickoff.

How is it that Macheda can play and possibly start for Manchester @ 17 years of age and Russotto does not get a shot? The season is over, give the kid a chance before someone snaps him up

errrr what new stadium? the san paolo is napoli! why dont they just renovate it instead? have the upper tier go all the way to the pitch over the running track. i always thought that would look quality just a wall of napoli fans!
i dont know why hes so keen on keeping hamsik when hes had such a shitty season and blatantly isnt that bothered about napoli anymore. he wants a defender, midfielder and striker? criscito, d’agostino and borriello its really as simple as that. all 3 are affordable and all would join

Thanks for the feedback Joseph. For a game like this, you have to try and find the funny side to stop yourself from crying.

I’m beginning to think there’s something about Russotto that keeps him from playing. Maybe he doesn’t train hard? I don’t know what it is, but if he was as good as advertised he would be getting regular games in.

He looks pretty good when he plays/ Italian managers seem to have trouble playing young Italians but no young stranieri. That SUCKS!!!!! And they wonder why our teams are out of the CL so soon. Dumb@sses!

hey alex, while we’re at it lets bring on messi and ronaldo as well. hamsik ans lavezzi are the worse players.
lets bring in maradona as coach as well

what? yea dam because criscito, borriello and d’agostino are up there with messi and ronaldo mate, that makes alot of sense. or shall we just settle for another aronica, pazienza and denis?!
lavezzi has raw talent that needs moulding, whereas hamsik has lost that loving feeling. so sell him make alot of money and reinvest it back into the squad. no player is untouchable especially when they have played like shit the entire second half of a season.

there is an interview with donadoni saying he is going to have more control over the transfer market, which is more like the old english type of management, which makes more sense as surely the manager knows best when it comes to what type of players he needs?
so maybe he will use his time at the national team to recruit some top quality italians (cassano has said a few times now how much he respects donadoni etc if hes stays at samp next season i say go all out and buy him the season after hes perfect for naples).

regarding russotto, the lad clearly has talent and has looked good when he has played maybe it is to do with his attitude or maybe hes just not ready. i think most players have to be at least 21 before they are mature and confident enough to play at a high level of course there are exceptions like pato, messi. what i dont understand is pia getting a game over him

he should definitely be top of the transfer list. he would probably be better than cigarini for the team because he is a little bit older and has experience in europe

I also don’t understand why Pia is even playing???? Every time I see him, he sucks! Oh yeah, he is Brazilian so he must be god or something> Give me a break! Calaio was better than Pia

I think Donadoni is trying to re-introduce players who were frozen out under Reja – Pia, Amodio etc. It’s a great way of boosting morale by making everyone feel important. Right now the team needs confidence whether they’re winning games or not.

i suppose hes testing players seeing if they will be useful next season as well. no excuse for russotto not getting more playing time though. i thought he would be played more. is he definitely a napoli player or is he just on loan? some sources say hes on loan others say hes a napoli player? if hes just on loan his lack of playing time might make him want to go elsewhere

why is de laurentiis the only man in the world who thinks signing fabio on a free is a bad idea?! if donadoni has more say over transfers he should push de la on it. fabio is one of the best defenders ever and the pride of neapolitans

Good point Neil. Guess he is trying to do what he thinks is right for the end season business. I agree with Alex though about Fabio C. Why not get him on a free? He is exactly what the team needs, and will bring a lot of good will and marketing for next year. De La is being a stubborn fool

its being reported everywhere lets hope marino makes it happen. like i said though if he doesnt bring back fabio he has to buy criscito. if youth is the way he wants to go then criscito is a young cannavaro and very versatile.

    2009-10= viviano/consigli, criscito, d’agostino, borriello/floccari

    2010-11= nocerino, cassano

    = assault on the scudetto

what can i say im a dreamer. its not even a case of spending loads of money look at genoa. they just have an amazing sporting director

Rusotto really needs to get a start this weekend and for the remainder of the stagione.

As for Floccari or Boriello, how about BOTH! Try and get Boriello on a loan since he is injury prone, and buy Floccari outright Sell Denis and Z Donkey, and bring in Fabio on a free and D’Ago. Sell Hamsik and Gargano

    Iezzo
    Santacroce, Fabio, Paolo, Aronica
    Maggio, D’Ago, Blasi, Vitale
    Lavezzi, Floccari[Boriello}

    Perfecto!

You have 4 forwards- Lavezzi, Floccari, Boriello, Rusotto

    Nice midfield and versatile D

according to all the reports hamsik will stay. if thats the case i would be happy with a team like this

    maggio-santacroce-p.cannavaro-criscito
    blasi-d’agostino-gargano
    lavezzi-hamsik
    borriello

of course in a perfect world fabio would be brought back. for fucking FREE de laurentiis you fool! one of the best defenders ever who captained italy to a world cup and pretty much won the whole thing himself with his amazing defending! in a team that is screaming out for leadership and discipline!

I would take it in a second. Cover two positions with one swipe, and both are italiani. I get the feeling De La will want some dough however.

it seems a bit far fetched…although secco is stupid enough to do it. iaquinta is the top of my list for a striker, hes been riding the bench all season and as soon as he gets a chance he proves hes one of the best srikers in europe. he puts everything into a match and thats what this team needs. although i doubt he will want to leave juve. same goes for giovinvo.
he might leave on loan or co-ownership but i doubt they would sell him as there would be riots in turin. along with cassano i think hes one of the most naturally gifted players italy has and its horrible he doesnt play more.
saying that though if they did join it would probably be one of the greatest transfer dealings in the history of football!

Iaquinta doesn´t want to leave Juventus, he´s been given plenty of opportunities but turned them all down.

Giovinco doesn´t want to leave either, but might for playing time. I don´t see him going to Napoli in a million years though.
