Napoli 2 Palermo 1: Zalayeta Comedy Goal Wins It
By: Neil | September 25th, 2008There’s just something funny about the way Marcelo Zalayeta plays. At times he’s slow and lumbering, other times he’s quick and powerful. He can put in an inspired and dominant performance, or he can be half asleep. His 75th minute goal was the winner as Napoli defeated Palermo 2-1 at the San Paolo on Wednesday night. With the victory Napoli continue their impressive start to the season, leapfrogging Palermo in the standings. The Partenopei are now in fourth place, just two points behind leaders Inter.
It wasn’t easy though. Midway through the second half I had a hard time figuring out which was more choppy: the live feed I was watching that kept giving out, but somehow got the job done, or Napoli’s three man backline, which kept giving me heart attacks but somehow got the job done. Napoli were also helped by the fact that Palermo was never decisive with their final ball. Although the Sicilians played a good game and did a lot of things well, they were fortunate to get on the scoresheet thanks to a penalty from Miccoli in the 83rd minute.
Napoli opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Zalayeta and Maggio combined well down the right wing to set up Hamsik for a tap in. It was the Slovak’s third goal of the season, placing him one goal behind Milito and Zarate for the Serie A lead. Palermo spent the rest of the match trying to generate offence and managed to control the game for large chunks, but could only create half chances that ended up being wasted. Zalayeta’s comical goal, which most Primavera strikers would have scored on the first try, secured the three points for Napoli. The fact that he scored the goal with a flick of his leg while sitting on his ass demonstrates just how entertaining he can be.
Here are the match highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLtfqwpANdw
Concerns for Napoli: the defence held up, but was shaky. On another night a sharper attacking team could have done much more damange. Too often our defenders just cleared the ball right to Palermo’s end, allowing them to start a fresh attack. Those kind of powerful clearances look impressive, but they really play into the other team’s hands by just giving them the ball.
Positives: Pretty much everything else. Iezzo showed why Navarro and Gianello can’t win the starter’s jersey, our midfield was solid as usual, and our strikers competed well. Overall Zalayeta was a bit rusty, but he did some nice work defensively – which is unusual for him – and got some of his confidence back with the well taken important goal.
With each match review I will try to offer up my version of ‘le pagelle’ for Napoli’s players, but the unstable feed made watching the game a bit difficult and I will pass on numerical evaluations. Man of the Match goes to Marek Hamsik. It’s easy to see why every big club in Europe wants him.
If you saw things differently, please leave your comments below. Questions for discussion: Was the Napoli you saw last night good enough to qualify for the Champions League? Do you feel comfortable with both Contini and Aronica starting in a three man defence? I’ll be back on Saturday with a preview of Napoli’s trip to the Dall’Ara.

Nice recap, Neil. Zalayeta’s goal was priceless.
I think the talk of Napoli and Champions League is a little premature right now- we’re only 4 games in. As for the defense, the backline needs more than one game in a row working together to gel- the Santacroce-Aronica switch off isn’t really helping anything. I’d be happier with a 4 man back line, but Reja seems wedded to 3-5-2.
And the defense is going to need to be ON come Sunday- Iezzo is out due to that broken nose. (He’s not expected to be back for the Benfica match either.) Under the circumstances, I’d say Santacroce shouldn’t start- I wouldn’t want to see us go down to 10 men without the reassurance of Iezzo in goal.
Joe C, in what must be a first in calcio, the curva ban was upheld on appeal, so the curvas stay closed until 20 October-AFTER the Juve match.

Thanks all for the comments. Since we have good depth at portiere, Iezzo’s injury isn’t a big problem. He might have been rested for the Bologna match anyways. But we need him back eventually.

well it is good to see napoli on the rise again and i hope you get into champions league and we get in uefa cup but it will be hard there are to many good teams this season! if hamsik and the rest stay with you and you sign a super keeper you will be in scudetto race next season and next time you win it will be beautiful day for the south!!!

i love napoli, always have and always will
and marino is really a genius, his talent for scouting young talent is incredible and the reason why we are where we are today. it also helps when u have an owner like de laurentiis who bleeds blue for the club and a coach like reja to took the helms in serie c to bring them back where they belong. but the one thing that i was never too keen on, even now, is the three defence we play. im not knocking our d, cause they are wonderfull, but like neil mentioned, any other team with a blistering offence would of capitalized on those mistakes. i know we play with a 5 man mid and the outer wings help out in the back but personally, the three man defense really scares me, like every game. it puts too much pressure on the keep (who has played phenominal thus far) and the 5 man mid. the addition of maggio this summer really gave us a boost in the defense department, his attacking style and ability to make crazy runs up the flanks have really helped us with our counter, but we cant rely on that forever. mind you this is the formation that brought us our of hell back into OUR house, cause after all this is our house, but against some bigger top flight teams, it wouldnt hurt to employ a more defense savy formation, WHILE still keeping the blistering offence that has gotten us to where we are, cause if santacroce keeps on getting red cards every second game, its gonna really cause problems in our back field.
but im just complaining about a team that has realized sooo many of their tifosi dreams
grazie raggazzi, and continue doing what you guys do bestand p.s. neil, its good to have some napoli blogs back, i was having some withdrawal lol
p.p.s hamsik for capocanniere?

I think Napoli is the long run could find trouble if Denis is a flop and have to rely on Zalayeta as well. If Napoli could get soemone like Pazzini to give some depth to the attck, the CL spot in May might not be far-fetched

Idk what to think of Denis he might be a flop but he has the makings of a good striker to bad he is alittle old.

Did anyone read the article on goal.com that said uefa cup is changing it system from entry next year. It also said it would be changing the tv rights. God I hope that has a affect on Napoli games. Cause no one knows when they will release napoli calcio rights out of the peninsula. I guess just something to look forward to.
