Mercato Rumours: De Sanctis, Thiago Motta, Ronaldinho, Cassano, Huntelaar
By: Neil | May 14th, 2009I really don’t like the direction of Donadoni’s Napoli. In fact, the team doesn’t really have a direction right now. Don is trying to bring in more established names to set a solid foundation, but there are problems with this approach. One, established names are a financial risk. We don’t have the financial power to experiment with rejuvenating Ronaldinho’s career. If we want to eventually reach Europe, we need to be getting the most out of our players for the euros spent. Two, many big name players aren’t completely sold on Don’s project. If you look at Napoli’s roster right now, there’s a good young core, but nobody knows whether these core players will leave or not. Pier Paolo Marino claims the players are not for sale, but these days players have the power and if they’re not completely happy they simply won’t give their best.
De Laurentiis and Marino are backed into a corner: the team wants to hold on to players like Lavezzi, Hamsik, and Santacroce, but if the players can’t or won’t play up to their potential, it might be better to sell them and invest in new players who want to play. Of course, once those players go to a new team, they’re inevitably more motivated and will start playing at their best again. It’s a constant battle that many management teams struggle to win.
As usual, the latest names are all ridiculous, and I can’t imagine many of these players playing for Napoli next season. We’ll start with De Sanctis. This guy has been Italy’s #3 keeper for a long time, mostly because Peruzzi was too old and there was really nobody else. He’s a really good keeper, but maybe not quite world class. At Sevilla he couldn’t win the starter’s job from Andres Palop, and he needed to be loaned out to Galatasaray to start for a team that was playing in Europe. He’s finally in danger of losing his place in the Italy squad, and even though Lippi scouts players outside of Italy he probably has a better chance of making the 2010 squad if he’s playing in Serie A. I actually wouldn’t mind Napoli getting De Sanctis. He’ll bring expeirence and credibility to Don’s project even if he’s not the most important piece.
Recent rumours have Napoli making a bid of 10m euros plus Santacroce for Thiago Motta. Motta is obviously a great player, but Napoli are stocked with lots of midfielders. Even if Motta is an upgrade over players like Gargano and Blasi, I don’t think he’s worth 10m euro plus Santacroce. If anything, we need to dump midfielders to get more defenders. I don’t understand this move from a business point of view.
About Ronaldinho? No, no, and no. I don’t know how we can afford him, and even if the club overhauls the wage structure I can’t see Ronaldinho being the answer. He seems to prefer partying over winning, and in today’s fast paced game players can’t be out of shape no matter how skilled they are. I hope this one doesn’t go through.
Cassano will cost around 20m euros. I think any team could use a player with Cassano’s skills, so it then becomes a question of how much is he worth? At his best he is a 20m euro player, but he has a history of losing focus and falling apart. I’d like to have him at Napoli, but not if it means selling our best players to finance it.
Napoli has been tracking Klaas Jan Huntelaar since he was at Ajax. Apparently Huntelaar is not happy at Real Madrid, and might be thinking of leaving. I can’t imagine he’d be interested in Napoli, but it’s nice to know that our d.g. can identify good talent sometimes.
Finally, there are reports that former Napoli boss Edy Reja will take over at Bari if Conte leaves for Juventus. I would really like to see this first because I’m a fan of Reja, and second to see how well he would do. Teams that bounce between Serie B and A seem to be the best fit for Reja, and I’d be very curious to see if he manages Bari the same way he did Napoli.
Next up: Napoli’s first home game since the 1-0 victory over Inter. The opponents are Torino, who are just one point above the relegation zone. If Napoli wins, it would be the team’s 2nd victory in 9 games under Donadoni. Don’s record is currently 1-5-2 for 8 points from 24 available.

great write neil. We need to send Torino to serie b. Let lecce come out of the relegation zone. I am going to sorrento next sat so I will be cheering are boys on against chievo. Anyone going to be in Napoli I wouldn’t mind meeting for the game and hanging out with some fellow offsiders.

Thanks Joseph. I like Don’s strategy of bringing some big name players on board, but the results on the field don’t exactly sell the club very well. Eventually Don will have to stop looking at future markets and concentrate on winning games.

Neil- I pretty puch agree with everything in your blog. No, no, and no to Ronny Jr.. No no and no to Motta for what is rumored. Yes yes and yes to KJH, but I don’t he will want to come to Napoli. Would be nice though.
And I also am not sold on Donadoni yet. Not expecting miracles, but a consistent form would be nice. Can’t really see mcuh ingenuity at the moment either.

For a while, Napoli was also linked with Suazo. I guess that was a non-starter, though.
Transfer rumors are so silly.

Neil I especially like your point about players leaving and then presssing to player better at their new clubs. See Gilardino as example A! I think the issue with Donadoni is no real commitment of funds from ownership and no real knowledge of who will be available from his current squad. So does he court a striker? What if Lavezzi stays, do you court a defender if Santacroce doesnt leave, it is a constant state of flux that no coach would welcome.

I think Don is planning a summer clearout, but since he’s only been there for a couple of months he’s not sure who to clear out and who to keep. He’s doing a good job of getting everybody playing time – injuries always help with that – but before big names are added smaller names have to be dropped.

He could ask for our advice if he wants to know who to get rid of…..LOL

Isn’t De Sanctis at Galatasaray?

Channel 4 said that Cigarini is bound for Napoli, but yet there is no link. hmmmm

Thanks, Steven, for picking up my error. De Sanctis is at Galatasaray, not Fener.
Multiple sources indicate that Napoli have bought Luca Cigarini.

If it’s true, this would be a great pick up. Young, very good, and Italian! Could also pull the strings in midfield.

ronaldinho would be good for napoli because he would be the star. if he was allowed to express himself then he would get back to his best. this is one of the best players in the last 10 years remember. no one can do what he can. only for 10m though, like its been mentioned. this wont happen he will go to man city i reckon.
cassano playing at the san paolo? its a match made in heaven. just imagine him picking out a bit of skill and slotting it past inter, roma or milan! the tifosi would go absolutely mental.
cassano is worth 30m in my opinion. hes in the top 5 players in the world in terms of talent, its the fact hes crazy why he isnt playing for a top european team. he has mellowed out though. if he wanted to join then i say sell hamsik to raise the funds. whats the point keeping a player whos not interested anymore.
same goes for lavezzi, if their hearts arent in it then they will be terrible next season. cassano is twice as good as either of them anyway, the best italian natural talent since baggio. plus hes a leader, would inject some passion into the team and more importantly give the side some character.as for cigarini i think hes an excellent player and exactly what the team needs. hes got two good feet, a quality shot, brilliant passing (compared to pirlo) and isnt afraid to get stuck in. good work from marino now for acquafresca!

Aquafresca, Cassano, and defender. We can dream high! Of course, money talks, and shite walks

the thing is cassano and acquafesca are not dreams. if cassano would go to sampdoria and take a pay cut why wouldnt he join napoli? you never know in football. i think if floccari joins genoa, napoli has a good chance of acquafresca.
“Anche il Napoli sul mio assistito? Certamente sarebbe una delle destinazioni migliori. Che coppia formerebbe con Lavezzi”.
thats from his agent.
hes got the potential to be an amazing bomber and more importantly hes hungry to play. the best possible outcome is sell hamsik to inter for cash plus acquafresca, de laurentiis scrapes his pennies together and invests in cassano, buys bellusci for around 2-3m and next season the team can line up like this;
iezzo
maggio-santacroce-p.cannavaro-vitale
gargano-cigarini-blasi
lavezzi-acquafresca-cassanonow that is dreaming high

Interesting development about Acquafresca. I wonder why Inter aren’t snapping him up?

“I wonder why Inter aren’t snapping him up?”
Easy. Because he’s Italiano

I was surprised to see that Inter aren’t intending on keeping Acquafresca (if that is indeed true), and for the much older Milito. I think it’s a bit sad and an all too common trend in Italian football.
Tsk tsk tsk.

Alex how about you come meet me in naploi for the last game of the year. You fly over I will buy the tickets to the game. Two more smart asses in the crowd is all we need.

i do find it strange that the italian champions arent willing to keep a promising young italian who has stated quite a few times that he wants to go back and do well for them. instead they want to sign a 29 year old argentine.

Inter loves Argies. Call Boca Inter.

they have introduced balotelli and santon so i thought they could be changing for the better. they were even interested in d’agostino at one point.
bit of trouble regarding the cigarini transfer, parma have given the green light, but atalanta are causing a bit of trouble over the ownership of garics. they want his whole contract whereas marino only wants him to leave on co-ownership. if napoli loses out with cigarini over garics im going to be seething!

Let Garics go.
