Mercato Rumours: Borriello, Floccari, Bocchetti, Amelia, Grosso

By: Neil | March 25th, 2009

With a new manager in place and the Society likely to resume its project, it could prompt De Laurentiis to re-open his wallet in the summer. Furthermore, Donadoni’s fame and stature could bring in some big name players who just could not get excited about playing under Reja.

To start I want to talk about Salvatore Bochetti. The Napoli native played for Frosinone last season in Serie B and was even linked with a move to his hometown club. Why this move never took place I don’t know. It would have been a perfect match for both teams – Napoli eventually signed Aronica who plays an identical role. And big surprise – Bocchetti wants to play in a Napoli jersey. There must have been something preventing the move, and now not only does Bocchetti belong to Genoa but his price has gone up big time since he earned a spot in Lippi’s squad.

The Borriello situation has also been well documented recently. Donadoni is a big fan of Borriello and the player is far from first choice at Milan. In the summer, Napoli could make a push to sign Borriello to address the need for a target man.

That’s only if they don’t sign Floccari. Atalanta’s d.g., Carlo Osti, believes Floccari would be the perfect foil for Lavezzi. Napoli and Atalanta already co-own Gyorgy Garics, so there could be a move that sees cash plus Garics become Atalanta property with the Calabrese striker going the other way.

Another player Don has his sights on is his fomer Livorno keeper Marco Amelia. Italy’s number two has been inconsistent for Palermo and they are considering looking for another option for long term goaltending. The rumoured swap has Christian Maggio being sent to Palermo in exchange for Amelia. I wouldn’t mind this move. I like Maggio but he forgets the defensive part of his role too often. I think he was a defender for Samp, and when he moved to Napoli it was understood he’d be a wingback, in between the defence and midfield. But he sometimes plays as a winger and gets caught out of position. Donadoni also knows how to get the best out of Amelia, who can replace the aging Iezzo.

Finally, Napoli is also interested in Olympique Lyon’s Fabio Grosso. If Grosso does return to Italy, he could play regularly for almost any of the top teams. It would be great if Napoli was on his list of potential clubs.

Actually there’s still more. Quagliarella, Cigarini, and D’Agostino have all been mentioned as possible Napoli targets. Plus Lazio’s Stefano Mauri is facing an expiring contract and wants to play for Napoli. His agent claims Napoli have inquired about him, but as you can tell Napoli have been talking about adding a lot of very talented players and some of these inquiries are no more than a passing interest.

Check out the mercato section of www.solonapoli.com for all the stories about transfer rumours. Some of the links I tried to include wouldn’t work.

So how many new players could join Napoli over the summer? I have absolutely no idea. It all depends on the global economy, and how much of his personal fortune DeLa wants to invest in his beloved SSC Napoli. I will say this much though: DeLa is very very smart with his money, and Napoli should be financially stable for a long time. This doesn’t necessarily mean lots of cash will be spent. But if there is a spending spree, it probably won’t come at the cost of long term security.

Before signing off I want to talk about the Donadoni effect. Don wasn’t my first choice – I would have picked Conte or Ferrara – but the more I think about the more I like Donadoni. Why? Simply because he’s built up relationships with some of Italy’s best players. Even for players who haven’t played for Italy the name Roberto Donadoni is one they can instantly respect. The sad truth is that Donadoni can continue making the same mistakes as Reja – witness bringing in Montervino in the Reggina game, and the lousy 91st minute substitution against Milan – but they players will respond better because Don reached a certain level as a player and then as a manager with the Nazionale. When players like Quagliarella and Amelia are deciding where to play, the manager’s resume will dictate a lot of their choice. I think for a lot of Napoli targets Reja was very questionable – it took him a very long time to reach Serie A, and that might have made lots of players look elsewhere. With Donadoni his reputation and his personality precedes him wherever he goes in the world of calcio. That alone is worth the price of any tactical errors.

Next up: preview for the Sampdoria game. This one could be more difficult than Milan, as Samp have a number of players – Cassano, Pazzini, Palombo – at the top of their game. Plus it’s at the Marassi, where Napoli haven’t won in three games against Genoa and Samp in the last couple of seasons.

It might take a little less butter with his cornetti to get him back to his best. Amelia is a fantastic keeper, but he’s inconsistent. The reason for that is that he still has to adapt to playing for a team that’s not battling relegation. Added to that is the lack of competition for his spot. Get Sirigu back to Palermo, and Marco will have to work to stay between the posts. And that’s just what he needs.

“Donadoni was a vital cog in a team that won five Serie A titles, three European Cups, three European Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups.”

lets hope he can bring that experience and winning mentality to the team

Amelia is one of those goalies that can kick ass for three matches, then mess up the following three. It says a volume that the best thing that happened to him after leaving Rioma nursery is Palermo, even with the much coveted title of “vice-Buffon.”

the hamsik to juve rumours are being mooted again. if marino played his cards right i honestly believe he could get around 15-20m and a player as well, maybe 2 like the amauri deal. secco really is that shit at his job. 15m plus palladino and criscito (or just criscito) that would be quality. bid the 15m for borriello, dela can spend around 8m on a playmaker like cigarini then pick fabio up on a free. amelia is world class on his day but i say give navarro a chance

whats the deal with russotto is he on loan or have we bought him for next season? he should be loaned out to a newly promoted team if thats the case, so long as we get someone like palladino

As far as I know Napoli has full ownership of Russotto. He didn’t make Casiraghi’s latest U-21 squad, which means he should probably be loaned out to get regular playing time.

when someone said he was the closest thing italy has to baggio i was over the moon he joined napoli. its a real shame he hasnt played that much. next season it would be good to see him upfront next to borriello, with lavezzi behind them. lavezzi is definitely not a striker i think he would be alot better in a kaka role

“Fabio and Napoli have undertaken different paths,” explained agent Enrico Fedele. “He is in love with his home town, but this club has chosen an alternative approach.”

well thats that then. this team needed his experience and leadership badly, plus he would of come on a free transfer. de la better pull something out the bag bigstyle because if he just signs some average foreigner again this team will go no where! marino better be lining up a deal for criscito

why didnt we sign pazzini?!!!!! or even cigarini. with fabio i can understand, hes 35 and a yard off the pace. but thats if napoli had to pay for him, he would of come on a free. its terrible because he would of been great not just for the team, but for the city as well. hes the local lad who done good, seen the world and finally come home.

lets just hope this isnt the sign of things to come, as in all these top players being linked with us and none of them will actually join. all the team needs is 3 quality players a defender, playmaker an striker. criscito, cigarini, borriello. all would join and de la can afford it. if hes serious about taking this team to the champions league hes going to have to start showing it by paying top dollar

    Neil,

Your right about Donadoni…he could make the same mistakes as Reja, but he has a name, a brand name and when your looking to bring in players, some high end players, they are going to feel more comfortable with Donadoni, because he can sell them about Napoli, about being the man at Napoli. I’m glad they are entertaining ideas about Amelia. I thought we should have looked at him last year. But I am very curious to see how this season plays out and what DeLa does over the summer.

Really interesting developments according to this source.

For me next years team should be 4-3-3(only dreaming a bit)

Marchetti, Maggio, Santacroce, Cannavaro, Grosso, – Banega, Cigarini, Hamsik, – Mannini, Lavezzi, Borriello

what an article. now that is a napoli fan who wants de la to spend some coin! i would be amazed if marchetti joined theres going to be alot of clubs after him. i reckon banega is a bit too young and hasnt played much. definitely not worth 8m. whoever paid 14m for him was crazy. the team needs serie a experience and i reckon you could pick up nocerino for 9-11m, maybe even exchange a player like gargano, blasi or bogliacino. its going to be an interesting summer thats for sure

Thanks for the link David. It’ll be an interesting summer if DeLa wants to spend. It would be amazing if we could bring in Marchetti.

As for Banega, I’ve seen him play at the U-20 World Cup in 2007. The kid definitely has talent, I’d like to know why he’s not more productive at Valencia. If we could get him for cheap it could be a good addition.

Valencia sent him on loan to Atletico Madrid for this season, I think a combination of to gain experience and to lighten their salary budget a bit. Atletico’s midfield kind of has a hole in it, and he hasn’t filled it. He’s only started 4 games all season, I think.

Valencia’s going to want one thing though, and that’s cash. Considering how much they wasted on signing him (plus the cash issues), I don’t see them letting him go for cheap. I think if Napoli nabs him, they will have overpaid.

if they think banega is going to solve the problem with creativity in midfield then this team is truly fucked. they paid a fortune for him, he couldnt break into the valencia team so they loan him to atletico and he cant get a game there?! why would you want to pay 8m for a player when he has flopped at 2 teams? if they can pick him up for 2-3m then maybe but other than that this is exactly what the team doesnt need, another overpriced, overrated stranieri. especially a 20 year old. the team needs serie a league experience. banega hasnt even got any la liga experience and hes been there 2 seasons

Banega would be a wonderful signing for Napoli. Don’t forget he came to Valencia during their worst period in recent memory with their worst head coach in history who was playing 35+ year old midfielders and losing every game due to that midfield. He’s also being held out of the Atletico team by a really good midfielder in his own right, Raul Garcia.

I really think the slower pace of Serie A will do him a lot of good…do you guys remember the Club World Cup when he was running rings around the Milan midfield? He also impressed in some Valencia games I watched last year, and for what it’s worth a ton of Valencia fans thought he should have been starting in the middle with Fernandes this year, but for some reason they loaned him.

Alessio, you have a point about them wanting cash in return but I don’t see anyone paying over 10m for the kid. Lack of first team football will def hurt his price a little, but I think he’s worth taking a chance on.

The 4-3-3 that David posted is top class, and would challenge for a top 4 spot.

maybe last season i would have been really up for him coming, but now after seeing he hasnt played much and the lack of experience in the squad i really think there are better players out there for the price being mooted. 8m is far to much if they can pick him up for 2-3m then fair enough but i dont think there can be anymore unproven players brought in or the project will lose momentum.
if this team is to take it to the next level, de la must invest in serie a proven players the most important being a playmaker and striker. cigarini, borriello should be the main targets and depending on the cash situation marchetti, pasqual, mauri etc can be brought in to add that depth and quality
