Marino’s Transfer Policy Under Fire

By: Neil | April 16th, 2009

It’s well known that a lot teams in Europe would like either Lavezzi or Hamsik in their team. Santacroce has also caught the attention of many clubs, so I’ll include him in the group of elite players that Marino discovered before anyone else. Based on those three alone, many people would argue that Pier Paolo Marino has done a great job bringing in young talent to Napoli. But what about the other signings? In light of Napoli’s struggles this season, Marino’s overall approach to rebuilding Napoli has come under fire, most recently from President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Players that Napoli payed a sizeable amount of money for haven’t had the impact that has been expected. Denis cost 8m Euros, Datolo 7m Euros, Rinaudo 5.5m Euros, Pazienza 4.5m Euros, Navarro 4m Euros (all these transfer fees are approximates. I wish I had time to do better research.) It’s not that these players don’t have talent, or that they haven’t contributed. The problem is that you expect a good return for the money invested, and for certain players the results so far don’t really show great business. For example, the signing of Aronica was much better than the signing of Rinaudo. It’s not because Aroinca’s a better player, but because he represents better value for the money spent. For Aronica we spent 2m Euros and we got a veteran player who is mostly playing to his ability. For Rinaudo we spent 5.5m Euros for a younger player with more potential than Aronica, but for whatever reason Rinaudo has struggled. If you were a director of football and you could take one transfer back, it would likely be the Rinaudo one.

To put it another way, last summer Napoli spent more than 23m on Russotto, Maggio, Rinaudo, and Denis, and the team could very well finish lower in the standings than last season. Add on the Datolo transfer in January and that’s a lot of money spent – even for rich teams like Juve or Milan – and the on field product is arguably not much better than last June. From DeLa’s point of view he was likely better off not spending anything. Napoli have been very active buyers in the mercato since winning promotion from Serie B, and despite the arrival of young stars and a supporting cast it appears the foundation still isn’t there to break into the top four.

Recent rumours have Napoli bringing in Floccari from Atalanta and Zuniga from Siena in the summer mercato. I think this is much smarter business (assuming the deals actually take place.) In exchange for Floccari we sell the remaining half of Garics, and for Zuniga we sell the remaining half of Calaio. We get two players who will address a couple of weak areas – a target man to play along Lavezzi, and a right sided defender/wingback. Giving up two players off our roster means we won’t pay ridiculous transfer fees, and Floccari already has lots of Serie A experience. If the two players don’t live up to expectations it’s not a big deal since they’re (hopefully) low risk financial investments.

Signing Udinese’s D’Agostino is also a good approach because selling the other half of Domizzi should reduce the transfer fee. But for me he’s a little bit of a higher risk than Floccari or Zuniga because with D’Agostino you’re paying for future results rather than how good he is now. Like Denis and Rinaudo, there’s no doubting D’Agostino’s talent, but if he doesn’t meet expectations it’s a lot of money spent on a young player who isn’t playing up to his potential. Whenever you bring in young players it’s often a guessing game to determine just how good they will be, and if you pay too much it becomes a bad signing.

Marino’s low risk signings have really payed dividends: Gargano, Lavezzi (6m, but he showed uncommon skill from day one at Napoli) Hamsik, Santacroce, Mannini. All these players, except Lavezzi, were picked up for lower transfer fees and all except maybe Mannini have dramatically increased in value. Why not continue with that approach in the mercato, and spend the money saved on a couple of key veterans like Cannavaro and someone else?

I’ve heard it argued many times that fans should not care about how their favourite team spends money. It’s DeLa’s money, so what do we care if he overspends? There is a grain of truth in that argument, but in the big picture fans are stakeholders, and usually a team’s collective fanbase does have a measurable impact on the club’s overall financial picture. So it does frustrate me a bit to see lots of money invested into the team without an improvement in results.

Finally, there will be no preview from me for the Cagliari game this week. I’ve been busy with exams this week – this blog has been written in bits and pieces over the last few days – and I’m leaving tomorrow morning for a weekend in Philadelphia. This will be my third Napoli game I’ve missed in the last five weeks, and the only games I’ve been able to watch have been 0-0 draws with Milan and Atalanta. I can’t remember the last time I watched Napoli score a goal.

I highly recommend Jeremy’s Cagliari blog as he usually has really good blogs, even if there aren’t a lot of Cagliari fans to comment. The Sardinians have overachieved this season and are hoping to sneak into a Europe league spot.

I never make predictions about Napoli games because I’m bound to be wrong. But for this game I’m going to predict that Daniele Conti will score a late late goal to give Cagliari a good result just so it doesn’t happen for the third game in a row between these two teams. And on that note let’s hope Napoli can earn a victory, no matter how ugly or injust.

well what can you say about that? some of the lads spend far to much time on the ball and go on and lose it. hamsik is either tired, not as good as everyone thought or not wanting to play for napoli anymore. de laurentiis has to sell this man so we can at least make a good profit.
lavezzi has to stop trying to be messi and maradona. hes trying to take on everyone at once instead of playing the easy ball. he had a couple of chances but his lack of finishing worries me a little. maybe he would be better off as a winger.
contini is just average at best criscito has to be brought in to replace him. zalayeta is just a donkey still.
i was impressed with datolo he was a bright spark. more importantly russotto came on his pace and dribbling were outstanding surely he has to play more games after this. next season he has to be on the first team he can seriously become a top player for napoli.
all in all i was expecting a loss so lets hope donadoni and de laurentiis can see that 3 quality players are needed for this team to be truly competitive. criscito, d’agostino and floccari would be spot on

Crap that we lost, but Cagliari are a tough side at home. It’s obvious we have no firepower upfront. Might as well just start Lavezzi and Rusotto next week against Inter just to mix things up.

How much did D’Ago’s price just go up? We need him now!

As for Hamsik, I was villified awhile ago when I said we need to sell him. I think I am have been proven right. I think he is a tad overated and now he just doesn’t play for the shirt anymore. Sell him while we can get some loot!

vincent you were right about hamsik and you were right about pazzini. d’agostino is perfect for the team as we have no one who specializes in free kicks and set pieces. domizzi could be part of the deal so i reckon he can be bought for 8-10m. worth every penny. now that udineses season is pretty much finished marino has to move quick as he wants to play for napoli so should be bought asap! napoli needs players that will fight for the shirt. contini needs to go as well

I’m happy for F. Cannavaro if he makes the move to Juve–he deserves respect. Delaurentis is a dumba$$ for not wanting to bring him on. I also agree that Hamsik and Lavezzi are both overrated. Lavezzi seems to be playing out of position, he tries to do too much with the ball. I thought Datolo played well, showed some creativity. Pazienza is a waste and Vitale needs to be more assertive on the ball. Worst of all, Z donkey…this guy should not even be playing in serie C…he can only score if the ball hits him by accident and finds the back of the net..how this slow lazy, skilless player starts I have no idea.

shit. hes exactly what the team needed, a quality playmaker with experience. lets hope inter go for thiago motta instead they like stranieri more. even worse though cigarini doesnt seem open to a move for whatever reason, this is where marino has to do his job and impress cigarini with the project.
there is more talk about signing banega which would be a disaster. this team is screaming out for a leader with experience and a 20 year old argentine who has played 10 games in 2 years would be the worst possible solution.

marino earn your money and go balls out for cigarini!

another bad idea from marino. there is maggio, santacroce, grava and even garics (if he returned) who can play on the right side of defence and midfield. we need a left sided defender to replace contini it isnt rocket science. criscito has said he would play for napoli as he is neapolitan! im really starting to worry about the future of this team. why sign stranieri when there are hundreds of quality italians and so many neapolitans that would give 100% to the team every game?
the team lacks an identity which is also worrying.

“Il mio sogno? Quello di tutti i ragazzi napoletani che giocano a calcio: debuttare in serie A al San Paolo con la maglia del Napoli”

sorry to post so many times but thats what im talking about! because napoli is back in serie a with strong financial backing there are going to loads of young lads from naples who will stay with the youth academy and hopefully become good enough for the 1st team.

Alex and everyone else, Napolis season ironically mirrors my dear Palermo’s season a couple years back…We were a top Serie A club at the winter break and the wheels fell off in the spring when Amauri went down with that horrendous knee injury..I know the feeling..Just hope it doesnt spill over into next season..I would love to see Napoli/Palermo fighting the Champions League

the fact 3rd and 4th place are anything but stable at the minute im wondering if there could be a shift in power. obviously if roma dont get in the champions league they are screwed and with teams like fiorentina, genoa full of top quality players they could eventually replace them in the long run.
then you have palermo who have a class team and a top manager, i truly believe if miccoli was fit for more of the season you could get in the champions league. nothing would be sweeter than napoli and palermo both in the champions league although it will never happen because the north wont let it.
this is all dependant on what de laurentiis does in the mercato of course. hes going to have to spend some big bucks if he doesnt want the team to stutter we have lost the momentum that was going to catapult us into the champions league.

bit of transfer news as well

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=33880

palladino would be a good buy i reckon. in the 4-3-3 he can play a similar role to henry at barca. his pace and skill remind me alot of thierry. he will only get better as well. cruz would score goals but would only be useful for a year, 2 at the most

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=33871

25m? sell him and get criscito thrown in as well. with that 25m make a bid for cassano. you have to aim for the best players if you want to progress. this is just paper talk though.

    http://www.napolipress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2659:criscito-qvoglio-il-genoaq&catid=34:primo-piano&Itemid=53

if napoli show firm interest in him he will join. if genoa do get in the champions league it will be difficult though.
marino really has to step up and sign 3 quality players in the summer or napoli will fall further behind

“He’s going to have to spend big bucks if he doesn’t want the team to stutter.”

Alex, DeLa has already spent big bucks. The reason the team is stuttering is because other teams have better depth than we do. Also, players like D’Agostino, Floccari, and Criscito are probably coveted by most Italian teams. Floccari is now being linked with Genoa as a replacement for Milito. His price just went up. D’Agostino’s price is always going up. These are not easy transfers to do, and if Napoli spends a boat load of money on one player it’s putting all the eggs in one basket.

I don’t know what the solution is, but buying young superstars is very difficult and even then it’s no guarantee of success.

the point i was trying to make is if he wants the team to progress hes going to have to spend more.
he might of spent alot of money but it doesnt matter because marino has wasted it.
i cant fault de la for putting the money in, its marino who is to blame for the state of things. last summer napoli was linked with amelia, bocchetti, cigarini, pasqual, milito among others. marino would rather pay a million less for some unproven stranieri or waste it on mediocrity. other teams are able to bring in top italian players for not that much. palermo and sampdoria are prime examples.
genoa was reinforced in every area with shrewd transfer dealings and taking risks on players, like motta, and i bet they didnt spend much more than napoli. obviously the genoa manager has a big part to play as well.
for me marino has to go. he has squandered millions on average squad players and not brought in adequate first team players with experience which were needed such as a playmaker. someone like foschi should be brought in to do the transfers, hes wasted at torino. some of the players he bought for palermo have gone on to be real quality buys. miccoli for 2m? kjaer? liverani for free?

kj i meant players of that calibre. amelia wont leave palermo for napoli, only roma and they are fucked unless sensi sells up.
