Lazio vs. Napoli

By: Neil | February 8th, 2013

3rd vs. 2nd… I think this one counts as a big match no? Christian Maggio returns from a broken hand to play, and Hernanes is tipped to start after getting concussed about a week ago. Make no mistake, this is a game where nothing is held back, and everything is given on the pitch. The last time Napoli was in Rome it was May and a memorable Coppa Italia triumph followed. This time Napoli are retracing their steps in the hope of a similar outcome. It won’t be easy as Lazio is having a great campaign. At home they are particularly tough racking up 9 wins in 12 matches, but Napoli will be up for the challenge.

Napoli’s only doubt is Hugo Campagnaro who played a full 90 minutes for Argentina during the week, although if he can prove his fitness he should get the start over Gamberini. Other than that, Napoli has a full starting lineup to choose from although Maggio hasn’t played in a while.

De Sanctis – Campagnaro/Gamberini, Cannavaro, Britos – Maggio, Behrami, Inler, Zuniga – Hamsik – Pandev, Cavani.

Lazio is without Miroslav Klose who has scored 10 goals this season, many of them decisive. But there are other attacking threats like Hernanes (8 goals) and Antonio Candreva (4 goals) so Napoli’s defence will be tested. Throw in Sergio Floccari, who always seems to score against Napoli, and Lazio will believe they can score.

Marchetti – Konko, Biava, Dias, Radu – Ledesma – Candreva, Hernanes, Mauri, Gonzalez – Floccari

This should be a very tense match and I can’t foresee too may goals. Lazio have a great record at home and are tough to beat, while Napoli have conceded just 9 goals in 11 away games. I won’t say this one has draw written all over it, but I’m not smart enough to say which team will have the talent and composure to get a decisive goal.

Prediction: Lazio 0 Napoli 0

Insigne needs to start after that performance, he was brilliant. Pandev was absolutely invisible all match.

Hamsik also ran he ass off to help with defensive duties in the second half, our defense struggled but the 1pt is pretty good considering Lazios home record.

I must say that I will remember Campagnaro’s goal today for a long time, what a wonderful parting gift to his team mates.

I think you can give Insigne the odd start now… instead of doing either/or, start them both on different matchdays.

Starting Insigne against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday is a good start, and then Pandev for Samp on the weekend.

IMO Insigne isn’t ready to be the starter. I think he’s better than Pandev, but this team could really use another forward to bridge the skill gap between Lorenzo and Cavani. Insigne will be at that level soon enough though I suppose.

@DT Institutional prejudice against Neapolitans. This is why Paolo gets overlooked, why DiNatale had to win Capocannoniere twice before getting some recognition at Coverciano, why Quags had to wait until the third game of a disastrous 2010WC to get a run out, why Mimmo Criscito was sent home from the Euros while players like Ranocchia got to stay… The list goes on.

The only exception to the rule was Fabio, but he played for the B&W devils so…

    Concur with you Mario
The elements of soccer on the field, and those in the board room.. ….
Let us have one of them on our team. Our interests must not be compromised by our political or prejudicially hidden intentions. Let us utilize one of their most identifiable public relation plugs. Let us hire one of them and as they say ” Facimmele fess e cuntient..”.

truly criminal indeed that PCannavaro isn’t getting a sniff of Gli Azzurri. Remember when Prandelli’s excuse was that PCanna plays in a system which uses 3 at the back? Well, didn’t Prandelli use 3 at the back in the Euro’s?

    Lame excuse Cesare!

I don’t have the stats, but I can’t recall when any one player had a big scoring game against Canna and Co. in the last three years.

If there is a prejudice, and it may indeed help explain Canna’s perpetual abscence, then I would have to think that with the likes of the Insigne Bros and Immobile (should they flourish as expected in the years ahead) the prejudice, or at least the exclusions that have resulted from it, would subside or become really glaring and obvious. Of course these boys already debut on the under 21 so, unless there is some devolution of talents or injury, I expect these Neapolitans to be there when their time comes…
