Juventus-Napoli Expected Lineups

By: fortunato | March 12th, 2008

Napoli has suffered a tough loss with striker Marcelo Zalayeta’s season ending left knee injury which will pave the way for Emanuele Calaio to start the rest of the season alongside of Ezequiel Lavezzi upfront. Napoli will not have midfielders Manuele Blasi or Daniele Mannini playing as they are both suspended for their back to back yellows. Midfielder Mirko Savini will be available and defender Fabiano Santacroce is expected to start Sunday against the hated the Juventini.

Reja’s expected formation will be the 3-5-2 formation (big surprise) with an expected midfield of Domizzi-Hamsik-Pazienza (who’s back now)-Gargano-Garics. The defenders are expected to be as last week against AS Roma in Contini-Cannavaro-Santacroce. Gianello will start in goal again as Iezzo is still not expected to return for another two weeks.

Juventus will also have some very key missing players due to suspensions and injuries on Sunday as they will be missing regulars Camoranesi, Legrottaglie and Zebina due to suspensions while starter Zanetti and reserve Tiago are out with injuries. Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri is expected to implement their usual 4-4-2 formation with Del Piero and Trezeguet upfront, a midfield of Nedved-Nocerino-Sissoko-Salihamidzic and a backline of Molinaro-Chiellini-Stendardo-Grygera with worldclass Buffon in the nets.

The task seems difficult for our boys. Prime time Sunday night at the Stadio Olimpico in Torino but our team has shown a crazy amount of spunk throughout the season when we expected it least. Juve will be missing key players but at the same time do have a reason to seek revenge since they’ve been crying ever since that October 27 afternoon in Napoli when we took them out 3-1; my head still hurts from all the Juventini whining that the refs were working against them. Also, Juventus has seemed very vulnerable lately, especially defensively. Remember their 3-2 loss to Fiorentina a week and a half ago in Torino?

Let’s not overplay the loss of Zalayeta too much. His loss hurts our depth, no doubt but with all due respect to his team leading 8 goals the Uruguayan has been more off than on this year. In many games he has been invisible and some of the goals he has scored have been of the “garbage” variety.

I predict a good game for our troops and I believe Calaio, has a lot to play for as I feel Reja has completely misused him the way he misused Striker Cristian Bucchi all of last year. This is Calaio’s chance to shine and I am predicting he will. Walter Gargano’s Goal

Are you co-blogging with Joe now, Fortunato?

I’m less worried about missing Zalayeta than I am having Blasi unavailable this game. I just hope we bring our “big match” mentality to this game (like we did against Inter) as opposed to “what, we’re playing today?” (against Roma).

I prefer Calaio to Zalayeta.I’ll be glad if he can play more regularly.

Yes, Lisa, Fortunato volunteered to help contribute and I think we all benefit from his insight. I like having another voice here.

To your point, I was shocked by our lack of any spark last week against Roma given our energy level against Inter. I can only see the side revert back to the energy and enthusiasm they showed against the nerazzurri. With all due respect to Roma, I think everyone simply gets more “up” for a match against Juventus. But, what do I know? I figured the same thing would happen last year when we went to Torino and played a dreadful game against the prison-stripers.

I really wish Cupi was healthy so we could go with a 4-man backline. Cupi-Canna-Santacroce-Contini is a fairly decent backline. Pazienza better show up for this one. I have been less than impressed.

By the way, the match will be shown on RAI International and on Fox Soccer Channel (for US viewers) and on SerieA.tv. No excuse to not see this match.

    Nice work, Fortunato!

Thanks guys. I am looking forward to sharing my opinions.
I too think that we should be up for this one! Our team seems to thrive when we least expect them to and I really think Calaio will have a big game and good last stretch of the season.
Zalayeta used to frustrate me, especilly the five or six times I got to see him up here in Canada. He seemed out of it, especially when you compare him to “il fulmine” Lavezzi, so much so that I was at times yelling at my computer or TV so as Reja could hear me tell him to break the “Zalayeta habit” and “start thinking Edoardo and stop being a creature of habit!!!!”. Sit Marcelo’s ass down for a game or so.
I agree with Lisa. We will miss Blasi (ex Juventino) but it is time for ex Fiorentina reserve Pazienza to justify Marino going out and spending that dough to get him at the January transfer. To me he has been invisible thus far.

Oh, I’m not complaining, Joe. If it means more here at the Napoli blog, I’m thrilled. Welcome, Fortunato! :)

Welcome Fortunato, I think this match will be important for Nap to try and prove that the Inter game wasn’t a fluke. It’ll be great to watch this not on a computer.
