Jesus is on his way to Napoli

By: Neil | January 28th, 2009

This post was originally going to be a preview of the Fiorentina game, but Napoli finally made a move in the January mercato. According to PierPaolo Marino, there is a verbal agreement for Boca Juniors left winger Jesus Datolo to move to the San Paolo. And aren’t we in need of some divine help?
The 24 year old Argentine made a name for himself at Banfield before moving to Boca in 2006. Now for around 7 million euros he’s Napoli newest player that will somehow be compared to Maradona.

Marino has scouted the player for a while now, and describes Datolo as a versatile player who can take free kicks and penalties. I haven’t heard of Datolo until just now so I can’t really comment on what he could bring. Hopefully there are some Napoli fans who follow the Argentine league and can give us an unofficial scouting report.

Datolo was brought over because there are a number of issues with Mannini on the left-wing. First of all, Mannini could face a ban of up to 2 years for showing up late to a doping test while playing with Brescia. The club is expecting a suspension, and there needs to be competition for Vitale in the left wingback position. But even if Mannini gets a short ban or no ban at all, Datolo has an attacking aspect to his game that Mannini is missing. Playing on his off wing Mannini struggled to get crosses in, and had to cut into the middle to be in position for a shot on net. Datolo gives Reja a different option down the left, and his ability to take penalties also takes some pressure of off Hamsik. And if Datolo works out as an attacking midfielder, it makes the club less dependent on Hamsik.

As for the Fiorentina game, Hamsik, Gargano, and Contini are all supsended. And it looks like Santacroce could be dropped for his errors in the Roma game. So our projected three man backline is Cannavaro, Rinaudo, and Aronica. Plus Iezzo still isn’t recovered so we’re going with number three Gianello in net again. This game will be a huge test of our defensive depth. It’s an issue we’ve struggled with all season, but sometimes when bench players know there’s nobody waiting to replace them it gives them more confidence.

In midfield Pazienza will replace Gargano, and I’m really stretching the term ‘replace’ here. It’s more likely that Pazienza will be a pale shadow of Gargano. Bogliacino comes in for Hamsik, and look for Zalayeta to retain his starting spot up front.

Napoli probably lineup: Gianello – Cannavaro, Rinaudo, Aronica – Maggio, Blasi, Pazienza, Bogliacino, Mannini – Zalayeta, Lavezzi

Fiorentina has a number of injury problems, most notably Adrian Mutu. Also missing are Kuzmanovic and Jorgensen. As the Channel 4 preview notes, since Mutu was injured Fiorentina haven’t scored a goal in more than two games. When I look at the Serie A scoring chart and I see Gilardino in third place with 12 goals – but none since Mutu’s injury – it really shows the value of the Romanian player to Cesare Prandelli’s side.

Last season Fiorentina won this fixture 1-0 thanks to a Christian Vieri goal. Here are the highlights from that game, which I think was played back in 2007.

With a home game against Udinese next weekend, I would be happy if Napoli could grab a point from this game. I don’t care if the team plays good, bad, or ugly, as long as we can leave with the score even. Given the number of key absences, and the fact that our road form is terrible, I’m not optimistic about this game.

Key question for Fiorentina: Can their offence finally get going against a weakened Napoli defence?

Key question for Napoli: Can the Partenopei play consistently well for the entire 90+ minutes?

I am having trouble finding an internet feed for this game, so if anyone can help out it will be much appreciated.

Forza Napoli! And if we lose, Jesus will no doubt come and save us.

Just look at my last posts. Seems a carbon copy of our problems. We are dropping faster than Paris Hilton’s panties. Reja has to GO!!!!
    We need real STRIKERS!
Dropping Santacroce after one bad game is not good for his confidence. His replacement didn’t do much better.

As for Jesus, he is very good. Saw some of him playing for Boca and he looks the real deal.

But, can we bring in some freakin’ Italians as well?????

3 defeats in a row im fuming. how have we just slipped down the table this much? its the managers fault its his job to get the players performing week in week out and you know there is a problem when a player comes off shouting at you and throwing gloves at the bench. reja has lost the changing room. and we need a goalkeeper badly if de laurentiis doesnt sign anyone we are going to struggle to get into the uefa cup the way things are going

Mannini is now gone for a year as well. Time to open up the wallet and get some signings. Also I could think of a few players to unload as well….

I’m pretty sure that we haven’t heard the end of this.

The players’ association is threatening a strike; Matterese is suggesting that the matches be delayed in protest; both clubs and the FIGC are looking for various avenues of appeal (most likely in the Swiss courts), and for once there is a unanimity of opinion here that the ban is ridiculously excessive.

I think our main problem is reja, and the lack of a creative midfielder or regista, who can feed the ball to Lavezzi in the right spaces were he can feed the ball to the other strikers and score more himself. I’m sorry but a player of Lazezzi’s calibur should be scoring at least an average of 15 + goals a season.Reja was good for serie C and B but now we need a quality head coach like maybe a Spaletti or Prandeli some one who’s got some balls and isn’t scared to change the formation when needed. The last 3 games our midfield has been non existent no creativity, they haven’t been able to get the ball to lavezzi in good positions on the field, they’ve been losing 1 on 1 chalenges, passing the ball carelessly and losing possetion. Its almost like they are playing with no confidence. Both Maggio an Hamsik have not been playing with the same intensity that they did in the begining of the season.Maybe Maggio’s problem is that there really isn’t a proven sub at his position and he could use some rest, Hamsik, I’m not really sure its almost like and I hate to say this but it seems that he is not quite that happy playing at Napoli. I hope that its the media that is blowing Hamsik’s story out of proportion. Any way the lack of good midfield play has put a lot of unecesary pressure on our defence and basically made our offence non existant, and I believe that that coupled with Reja’s poor coaching decisions and his inability to motivate our guys outsie of San Paolo’s friendly walls has been this team’s down fall. Hopefully this new guy Jesus Datolo brings a breath of fresh air to the team with his speed and offensive ability. I also feel that Russotto should get more of a chance to play to get more experience but reja isn’t showing a lot of confidence in him. They keep saying he’s too young and needs more experience, last time i checked he wasn’t that much younger than hamsik and how can he get experience if he never plays. The few times i’ve seen him play i saw a fast player with good ball control with the ability to create plays on the offensive side of the field, something this team sorely needs.I’d like to see a line up like this
    (3-4-1-2) Iezzo,
    Santacroce,Cannavaro,Contini
    Maggio,(Blasi or Gargano),Hamsik,Datolo
    Russotto
    Lavezzi,Zalayeta

Thats my view of what the line up should look like.Denis was Marino’s biggest flop he plain sucks. We should have stepped up to the plate and gotten Milito who would have been paired up with lavezzi giving this team a strong chance to fight fo a champions league position and not struggle to make the coppa uefa a team like napoli should be playing in the champions league and not the coppa uefa. Had Delaurentiis stepped up to the plate and beat Genoa to the punch like was talked about last june we wouldn’t be in the position we are now. Also if I have 2 here that this team still needs time 2 grow I’m gonna puke, they’ve been playing together for 2 yrs. now and if we are losing against teams like torino and chievo its time to tell reja bye bye an start dishing out more money. This is unexceptable.I’m out FORZA NAPOLI.

all that was needed this january was iaquinta and cigarini. cigarinis agent has ruled out a move so the next best thing would be gaetano d’agostino. and of course reja needs to go
