“It’s A Great Stadium To Play Football”

By: Neil | April 26th, 2009

Napoli 1-0 Inter
If there’s one stadium in the world that can leave Jose Mourinho baffled and confused, it’s the San Paolo. The tenants put on a second half clinic to leave Mourinho and his players disappointed, emotional, and flat out bewildered. If you didn’t follow football at all, and started watching just after Zalayeta entered, you might think he’s one of the elite players in the world. His 73rd minute cracker, set up beautifully by Lavezzi, deflated the nerazzurri and gave the Partenopei another famous home victory. Following the goal, Napoli turned it up for the last fifteen minutes and were playing keep away from the best team in Serie A.

In the post-match interviews, Donadoni showed the restrained attitude you need by pointing out that there are still a lot of problems that have to be worked out. I would describe this game as shockingly good. After going 14 matches without a win, I was not expecting this. If Napoli had only played half as well in previous games, the winless streak would have been snapped some time ago.

Jose Mourinho gave his usual well thought out comments This game seems to have left him perplexed, as his quotes are a little stranger than usual. My favourite is when he says that the game could have been played withough goalkeepers. That’s classic Mourinho – it’s his way of coming to terms with barely any scoring chances by both sides.

What made Inter look like an average team? Well, the absences of Muntari and Maicon hurt. Having one of those players out is bad enough, but Inter could not attack down the wings as they usually do. Part of the credit has to go to Napoli, but if Inter had their full starting lineup it would have been much more difficult. Inter’s strikers also struggled. Balotetlli has to figure out how to stand up for himself without getting into trouble. He’s made himself into a target by reacting to the slightest provocation. Teams are going to try and play head games with him because it’s much easier than defending his talent. I think Mourinho should have subbed him in the second half because he wasn’t mentally focussed and stopped being as effective as he was in the first half. Santacroce was the role model that game for how to dominate physically without getting into off the ball conflict. I have to steal one of Vincent’s comments and give it a wider audience – when Santacroce takes off his shorts, Balotelli is going to fall out of his pocket. Ibra also struggled the closer he got to the Napoli goal line. I know there’s a theory that Ibra doesn’t play well in big games, but I don’t buy it. He didn’t have a bad game, but not a great one either.

On the Napoli side our goalkeeping and our defence were the backbone of the team today. So much for my preview about how Napoli’s defence is thin and needs reinforcements. Contini looked much better than he usually does. I don’t know if it’s because he was in the middle or because it was a big game. Aronica was very good, and Santacroce should be starting for Italy. All three played up to their potential today, and if we had that kind of defending every week our league position would be much better.

Highlights – the Solo Napoli commentator gets even more hysterical than usual when Zalayeta scores:

As a special bonus I’m going to include a lengthy interview with Mourhinho.

Donadoni also deserves lots of credit. The entire team played well, it wasn’t a case of a few individuals putting in brilliant performances. When the whole team is clicking, you know the manager did his job in preparing the team. Don also got his substitutions spot on – Zalayeta scores ten minutes after coming on, and Datolo picked up a tired and possibly injured Lavezzi. The Bogliacino sub was a classic time waster, but since four minutes were added on I don’t know if it succeeded in wasting any time.

Le Pagelle:

Navarro: 7.0 His save on the Samuel header was just as valuable as a goal
Santacroce: 7.5 Dominated the right hand side yet again
Contini: 7.0 Looked more comfortable in the centre than on the left
Aronica: 6.5 Worked hard all game long and didn’t make a major error
Montervino: 6.5 Great leadership in Canna’s absence
Blasi: 7.0 Brilliant in shutting down Stankovic
Amodio: 6.0 Weak first half, but did his job in the second half
Hamsik: 6.0 Average game from the Slovak
Mannini: 6.5 Struggled offensively, but fought hard all game
Lavezzi: 7.0 Showed his class to set up Zalayeta
Denis: 6.0 Isolated much of the time

Subs: Zalayeta 7.0, Datolo 6.5, Bogliacino N/A

Donadoni: 7.5 The game plan and substitutions worked beautifully

Next up is away to Siena. I have no idea what to expect next game – Napoli has been inconsistent. It would be great to see a repeat performance, but too many times this season Napoli has played to the level of our opponents. It works great against Inter, but not so well against teams in the bottom half of the table.

There should be lots of news development in the next few days, including more transfer rumours. I’ll do the usual midweek update when there’s enough for a decent sized post.

lavezzi out for two weeks. I told you he looked injured alex. Everyone was yelling at boletetlli cause he was trying to rush lavezzi off the field that’s why everything was wierd when he left the pitch.

Santacroce was clinical last night, balotelli probably still have nightmares. Quite frankly Italy’s CB problems seem to be solved by the likes of Chiellini, Gamberini, and Santacroce, now it is up to Lippi to make it happen.

ive been harsh with el pocho lately he is a top player and fair enough then with regards to him going off like that. its the way his head was down i thought he was just sulking. i just think hes being over used.

donadoni being an amazing ex winger himself should mould lavezzi into that position on the right, he blatantly isnt a striker as he cant score enough. he would be far more useful on the right cutting in
this is a prime oppurtunity for donadoni to play russotto, every time he has been used as a sub hes looked good. i bet he will start denis next to zalayeta though.
whats happened to hamsik?!! is he tired or has his head been turned? i read about inter offering cash plus acquafresca for marek and to be honest i would take that in a heartbeat.

what can you say about santacroce apart from if we can keep him happy napoli has a world class italian defender that we can build our defence around for years to come. the reason i always bang on about criscito as well is because out of all the defenders out there that napoli has a chance of signing he would compliment santacroce the best. the obvious bonus is he is napoletano and would play for the shirt, is future captain material and would play regular international football with fabiano

gianfranco the italy backline will be excellent for the world cup off the top of my head i can think of motta, zambrotta, f.cannavaro, gamberini, chiellini, santacroce, bocchetti, criscito, de ceglie, grosso and whatever youth players might do well enough tobe noticed. your national pool is amazing!

d’agostino will be worth a fortune with the run of form hes on. criscito, cigarini and floccari would be pick of those names

i reckon last night could have an amazing effect on how the mercato will turn out. im sure after beating inter de laurentiis will be overjoyed and maybe more wiling to splash some cash come the summer.

with donadoni at the helm and through his experience with the national team i hope he can bring in some young italian players hungry for success. napoli needs lads that will play for the shirt and not just because maradona played there like all the argies say

If Napoli play again like you guys did against Inter, you’ll probably beat Siena 2-0. Siena are a very underrated team, remember that they only lost to Inter earlier this season because of an allowed offside goal by Maicon (whose injured). And btw, i dont think Inter can make excuses with Maicon and Muntari being out. Napoli also had the captain Paolo Cannavaro out suspended, as well as Christian Maggio, probably the best right back in Serie A only after Maicon himself. I’d say it was fair injury-wise.

Anyways, Forza Juve, and thanks for the help by beating Inter.

Good points Armando. Our depth players really stepped up so we didn’t feel the absence of some of our starters.

he can play like that at 21? that header he scores 50seconds in is amazing. hes got a bright future ahead of him. if he goes back to inter and they sign a striker like milito then he will leave. i would take acquafresca over floccari, borriello, quagliarella etc hes a proper italian bomber

I think Fresh water is pretty good, but I am not sure if he is our big need at forward. I would like him AND Floccari instead of Z-Donkey and Denis the menace. But if we can only get one, I would go with Floccari at the moment.

I really am hoping this big win will give us a spark for the rest of the season.

“Just about anyone can seem a campione in those compilation clips”- ive seen him play for cagliari the lad is quality and has always been earmarked as a top striker for the future

    http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/apr28f.html

all the reports in italy and everywhere else are saying floccari is messing about so hes a big doubt now. as long as marino doesnt make the same mistake of just buying more average stranieri after all the top italian names that have been linked to napoli.
if they can land cigarini i would be very impressed hes got the same style of play as pirlo passing wise but better at defending.

another report claimed we would bid 16m for thiago motta which is madness hes had one good season and could easily get injured again. plus i wouldnt be impressed giving 16m to genoa who will be one of our main competitors in the next few seasons

“Floccari does not want Napoli,” De Laurentiis is quoted as saying in Il Corriere Dello Sport.

“I think it would be better for him to find somewhere else.”

well thats the end of that! that is a shame. looks like we will have to wait and see if milan and inter buy another striker each, or if cagliari make the uefa cup

What’s up Floccari’s @ss??? He is pretty good and would be an upgrade over Z-Donkey and Denis the menace, but c’mon Sergio, be happy that a team like Napoli is placing a priority on you.

    Is Boriello healthy yet???

apparently macron are the new shirt sponsors. never heard of them before, i hope they will just do a simple retro looking shirt. as long as they dont put the badge on the shoulder like this seasons. they do the cagliari and bologna shirts apparently

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=34050

he seems to know what hes talking about. lotito says he has no idea about any deal for ledesma. i definitely dont want another argentine especially not a laziale vice captain. i think they will focus on cigarini.

whats worrying is that after all the top italian names that have been linked with napoli marino seems to be more interested in kalinic and ledesma. he better not fuck up another mercato

I think we sell Hamsik..personally think he’s overrated and if we could get 25m for him, so be it. I think he would rathe rplay for Juve anyway…that goes the same for Lavezzi
