Inter vs. Napoli

By: Neil | December 8th, 2012

Big question: did Napoli learn anything from the loss to Juve earlier in the season? That day the team executed Mazzarri’s game plan well enough, but the approach was too cautious and Napoli had a very thin hold on a point before two second half goals gave Juve a deserved win. On Sunday Napoli heads north once more, this time facing 3rd place Inter who no doubt have their eyes on 2nd. Like Juventus it won’t be a season defining game, but it will be another high pressure road game against a massive club. Napoli won’t be able to play the same way as they did at home to Pescara last week, but I would like to see do more than try to sneak the odd goal on the counter. They have to press and if they sit back and absorb it will be an invitation for Inter to attack repeatedly.

Mazzarri’s team is pretty much set.

De Sanctis – Gamberini, Canna, Britos – Mesto, Inler, Behrami, Zuniga – Hamsik – Cavani, Insigne

This is Mazzarri’s preferred starting 11 for the moment with Mesto actually favoured over Maggio. I don’t why but Superbyke’s form has dipped a little and it opened the door for Mesto to get a run of games in. Either way I have faith in both players for big games.

Napoli conceded 3 goals at home to PSV in midweek and while a poor game from Rosati made it easy for PSV they still proved that the Napoli defence can be stretched by a front 3. Look for Mesto and Zuniga to play more defensively early on and once Inter’s attacking player are (hopefully) nullified the wingbacks can start to press forward.

To be honest I have no idea what will happen; the uncertainty is what makes sports so exciting. I would be happy with a draw but last season Napoli was good enough to go to the San Siro and pull out a win over Inter.

Snr Napcorda Do you think in Neopolitan than translate because most Americans I know can hardly string two sentences together. Of course I am talking about stereotypes here. The country that brought the Big Bag Theory and the Kardashians can’t be expected to be perfect. Insigne is brilliant

Mr. Taylor your observations and speculations are sharp and pungent. I am a tad apprehensive when utilizing this forum for non soccer relating issues but I also like to break some rules.
Having spent 12 years of Neapolitan Street years as the formative platform of my development has played a huge role on how I think. During the second war and shortly after, living in the streets of Naples was no Dysneyland.
As for the Big Bang and the Kardashians I wouldn’t mind putting the two together in some form or other. But seriously you touched the culprit of all the shortcomings of American Society, ” TELEVISION”. Two of my respected characters tried to warn them about it, George Orwell and a Blues Man from across our pond John Mayall.

    Some notes to point out
we lost to have and inter away from home. Next half of the season we get them both at home

Mazzarri is saying Napoli need to score more. Second half he changed the shape to 4-3-3 which I think makes sense. We start every game with 5 defenders plus behrami. But everyone on this blog had stated this over and over.

For the past few years, we were always able to compete with teams that were better than us by defending well and countering while struggling with weaker teams. Maybe the problem now is that there aren’t many teams better than us. We were clearly the better side yesterday

Nap…John Mayall, a great blues man! And much like the loss yesterday, his music is so often bitter sweet, which accounts for much of its beauty…

Gianello is the devil. What the hell is he doing to the team! Why the hell would u come out and say I tried to fix a game three years ago but nobody wanted in. Does the idiot have a personal vendetta? If cannavaro gets banned for nine months I will lose faith in the league.

9 months is crazy!! Would it go into effect immediately? What about the reduction in points?

It looks like Napoli will receive some kind of punishment for the scandal. No more than two points, probably one, and suspensions for Canna and Grava. Nine months seems quite harsh, probably 6 months or shorter. It would go into effect immediately, and I believe the ruling will be handed out on Friday.

Napoli is already looking for defensive replacements in January. Canna likely suspended, Aronica not part of the future and would like to finish his career at hometown Palermo, and Campagnaro’s contract expires in June and a renewal will be difficult as other clubs are lining up to get him on a Bosman.

If I would allow my imagination to run wildly I would possibly interrelate Lobbying as we know it, to also exist in the world of soccer. Having said that, I can just imagine the kind of serious lobbying that can occur in Naples. This can make a good movie, De Laurentis should capitalize on this. Make it extremely controversial make lots of money and invest it on the team.

Even a reduced sentence for Canna pretty much knocks him out for the regular season.

From what I understand it’s basically one mans word over another?

Yeah, I really don’t see how they can issue any punishment when there’s no proof other than Gianello coming out and saying it 3 years later. Maybe he’s bitter than he doesn’t even have a team right now?

So in theory, grava could say it was me that gianello told and canna was not there.

    Silly.

So it looks like Aronica is going back to Palermo. Very curious to see how the December market goes?

If they bring in another South American youngster that no one’s ever heard of I’ll be pissed. We need some proven, prime-aged defenders right now if we’re gonna make a title push.

This looks intriguing, though. We could get a vice-Hamsik and a vice-Cavani (who would happen to be Napolitano as well) in exchange for a shit keeper and a player who just hasn’t fit in

The difference here to what was happended to Conte and Masiello (Bari) is that match fixing didn’t actually occur in Napoli’s case. Gianello wanted to fix the game. He asked Cannavaro/Grava for their participation. They didn’t accept & the match fix didn’t go ahead. Why Gianello is bringing it up now beggars believe. He obviously is an attention seeker. Conte was aware of the match fix at Siena. Masiello admitted to scoring an own goal purposely. Conte got 4 months (after appeal)…Masiello 2 years.
Given that the match fix didn’t occur. Cannavaro/Grava didn’t participate (in Gianello’s words)…and the fact there is no proof…besides what Gianello’s foul mouth is saying…how the hell could you punish Cannavaro/Grava and deduct Napoli points? But I guess this is Italy..a place doesn’t follow logic. Hell..Gianello, can say he asked the whole team to have an off day…would that mean the whole team gets suspended. Ridiculous. Stupid stupid rules made by a stupid federation and doesn’t use any discretion.

The point is that Canna and/or Grava should have alerted this kind of thing to the authorities if in fact Gianello approached them. Attempted fixing (which goes wrong/doesn’t take place) and actual fixing are different but both have a guilty mind.

The intentions matter, it’s like on the field when you throw a punch at someone and miss completely. It’s still violent conduct even though you didn’t connect, and the legal system says Canna and Grava are possibly guilty even if the fix never went through.

I’m not saying I agree with the verdict, but that’s how the justice system works.

the justice system is flawed big time. I just cant comprehend that Cannavaro/Grava get suspended based on an accusation. What if Napoli lose the Scudetto or miss out on CL footballl by 2 points, all becasue fo what? Nothing happened, there is no evidence…just 1 former reserve keeper trying to bring the team down. What motive does Gianello have to come out with this? He’s going to get suspended for 3 years….based on his own omission. Something doesnt smell right.

well done Neil for explaining that so simply the comparison with the thrown punch did it for me. Christ Mr Napcorda who once again has outshone himself with his “I would possibly interrelate Lobbying as we know it,” poetic splendiferousness, wud be proud. Mind you I completely at a loss like Seb seems to be why it should happen but there again we live in civilised democracies unlike the world of FIGC. As for Merkel after she has done her daily stint in the German Parliament I don’t think she will be up to fly to Italy for training everyday. She will have to leave her job and move to Naples full time. Have you seen her in full flow, mind she cud d a better job than Maggio who at the moment reminds me of one of those unfortunates who fling their arms up in the air in a manner not dissimilar to berserker pigeon-botherers in Trafalgar Square, except with no cider and a good deal less fist-waving at bendy red buses. Immobile on the other hand would be perfect and can link up with Lorenzo. All we need now is that fellow who moved to PSG .
