Holding our mojo on the road

By: Christopher | October 24th, 2009

fiorentina
(Yeah that’s Viola man high schooler? *midfielder* Montolivo holding(?) his junk).

Another away game, another opportunity to list a dismal sequence of statistics regarding our recent history of away games. For now I’ll just leave it at we haven’t beat the Viola since 01. The progression of Fiorentina’s quality since doesn’t seem to help our chances of breaking the spell either. Fiorentina have shown this year that they are a consistent force to be contended with. After multiple games in which they won despite being the underdog I found myself asking, ‘are they for real?’ As you can guess, this question was answered after sloshing Liverpool in the CL group stages. Yeah Liverpool is terrible right now, but this was before Torres recent injury, although he mine as well have not started that game because Viola standout CB Dainelli made him a ghost. To quote Neil (Since Neil’s internet is down and he wanted to write about Fiorentina) from our ongoing football (and philosophic (we’re both philosophy students) email correspondence, “Quite frankly, it’s the model Napoli should aspire to.” I think this is absolutely correct. Prandelli’s done it just right, from being open to player positions and finding Vargas’ best, to developing Jovetic, and in general finding consistency. I’m going to let my laziness override my desire to not appear like a conceited asshole, and quote myself from the email correspondence. rbc-sports“The thing I’m most impressed with about Fiorentina is the management of Jovetic. What a superb young player. Prandelli gave him almost 30 appearances last season which I believe was second only to Pato (who is even a bit older) in terms of youngsters getting starting roles. And he got a lot of criticism as Jovetic was clearly raw in form, and only managed something like two goals. Yet the persistence was amazing and now so is the outcome… All of these rumors of big club offers for him omit an ‘I told you so.’ I just think a lot of clubs are too impatient, and would rather promote the urgency of goalscoring through constant competition and cycling of the strikers rather than cultivating talent and building confidence.” You could say that this sort of cultivation of youngsters is not as available of an option for the top dog clubs, but for our type of clubs I think patience is a virtue when it comes to giving players time to develop… they may not stick around forever (hopefully Hamsik enjoys his Napoli love / ability to speed on the streets enough so he doesn’t leave). Think of that certain young man that left over the summer, Santacroce keeping the bench warm as ever until Donadoni gets desperate and puts him in a sudden intense game where he injures that lame muscle in your knee that keeps you out for extensive periods of time. Anyway, back to the game at hand….

Lineups:

Fiorentina: Frey; Comotto, Gamberini, Dainelli (D), Gobbi; Zanetti, Montolivo; Santana, Jovetic, Vargas; Gilardino

Notes: Still not sure which is better, Jo Jo starting or Mutu being on the bench.
“Who will play? I still haven’t decided,” Prandelli declared.
I guess what is most scary is what is going to happen. Jovetic is going to start from a fresh rest off Fiorentina’s Budapest match, and Mutu, being in that very very deadly form that he migrates too when he is not on the injury list, will likely come on to the field at a later time. The good news? Dainelli may not be fit enough to start, and Kroldrup may have to take his place.

Napoli:
(3-4-3): Iezzo, Grava (/Campagnaro), Rinaudo, Contini; Maggio, Pazienza, Gargano, Hamsik; Aronica, Quagliarella, Lavezzi

“The important thing is that people have seen my mentality. Napoli will fight until the 95th minute. And I will guarantee you this myself.”

“I spoke to the lads very clearly – the only way I know how to communicate – and they must start believing Napoli have a soul and an identity wherever they are.”

We like your style Mazzarri.

gennaro_iezzo_uscita

Notes:
This lineup could go a lot of different ways but this does seem most probably, hopefully Campagnaro will make it back. It will be an interesting game for Iezzo first start of the season- with Vargas- Mutu- Gila in front of his net (and hopefully Grava- Rinaudo-Contini in front of them) Still trying to see what Mazzarri sees in Pazienza, but I’ll shut up and be open minded and try to see what he can offer in the new system.

Prediction
: I’m going to throw my balls out on the chop block for this one and predict a 3-1 victory for us. I don’t know why, it doesn’t seem probable, seeing as I spent most of the initial part of the post praising Fiorentina it doesn’t make much sense, but I just have that feeling (could have been all the alcohol last night).

Forza Napoli!!

WOW!!!!! That is HUGEEEEE for Napoli.

I have to ask for all the soccer players on this blog, Chris, Alex, Gennaro adn anybody else who plays soccer: Is there an advantage when a soccer player on a penalty, as he is ready to kick, stutters or does a stop and go before he kicks it? I find that when players do that, often times they fail. I would think you set the ball, you focus on where you want to kick it and then you kick the $hit out of the ball? Can someone tell me?

Quags will be thanking Maggio BIG TIME for that sweet ball and let’s give credit to Denis for the pass.

And all things considering, had we won at home against Udinese, we would have 15 points. So…I think we are okay. Tough matchups this week home vs Milan and at Juve. We beat Milan at home and then we draw against Juve..I’ll take it!!!

What a great result!! Just finished watching a replay of it on tv. Denis with the assist unreal. Mazzarri getting booted was great, finally a coach with some fire. Defense held up really well for the most part although contini made a few mindless passes again. So happy, Mazzarri was right, this team fought until the 95th minute! Forza Napoli!

This game just made my day. Mazzarri is a man of his word. Bring on Milan.

Luigi I’m not as experienced as some of the other people playing soccer but I’ll give your question a go. As far as I know, a lot of players do have a predetermined side that they are shooting at (that’s what my coach preached to our team before state championships). So if this is the case I agree with you that a stutter step is not as useful as just focusing on the side you are kicking it too. But I suppose that some players are good enough where they can change the direction of the shot right before they kick, and the purpose of the stutter would be to see if the goalkeeper has fully committed to a pre determined.

the stutter is also to throw the goalies timing off. even if he guesses the right direction, you can usually put it over him if you hit it later than he thinks youre going to. cronaldo does it all the time, but hey… he biffed one in a CL final.

amazing victory today. from all the quotes it seems mazzarri has seriously had an immediat impact on the mentality of the team and its paying off straight away!

luigi i was taught from a very young age to just hit the ball as hard as you can because the more you think about it the more you could cock it up (see baggio).

obviously with professionals it will be more to do with technique but i never like players taking time on a penalty, you should just hit it!

I just step up and bang the ball, forget the stutter step.

    But on to the game

    AN AWAY WIN???????? OMG!!!!

Great result. Yeah 1-0 is iffy, but for Napoli to get 3 points on the road is a miracle!

    Fantastico

    Chelsea eye up Hamsik
Chelsea have one again been linked with a bid for Napoli ace Marek Hamsik. Coach Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly earmarked 22-year-old playmaker if the Blues manage to reverse their transfer ban. The Slovakian international made his debut in Serie A at the age of just 17 and has managed an impressive five goals from midfield in eight games for Napoli this season and is the club’s top scorer over the last two seasons.

What do you guys think? I think that if we can provide a quality team, that DeLa will be in the “buyers” category, as opposed to the “sellers” category. All the more reason to continue success. We need a HUGE win aginst Milan on Wed. Iaquinta is not playing as he is out, but I think we can pull off at least a draw.

I know I know I get overly excited after a win and think that Napoli is unstoppable..ahahahhahahahahahah

Then when they lose, I think they are the worst team..great fan I am..AHAHAH

I have a question for anyone who might know.

I was wondering why the lower levels in some Italian stadiums are almost completely empty during games, while the upper bowl is full. I’ve seen it at the San Paolo, and I’ve also seen it in Bari. Anyone know why?

Mike D I always asumed that no one wanted to get hit in the back of the head with a flare or a banger. Ha! No clue. You see people there sometimes but they always look like they are working (sitting off in the cut watching the match smoking a cig drinking a espresso) real hard. Lol. I think they don’t even open that part unless they need to. I can promise you there will be people sitting there wednesday night. No Clue Mike

i think those seats are a lot more expensive than the upper ring and arent particularly worth the money for smaller teams. ive heard some can be unsafe as well. i wonder what dela is going to do with the stadium? so glad hes going to try and stay in the san paolo.

luigi i think hamsik is ready to play for any of the big teams and it wouldnt suprise me if man utd wanted him as a replacement for giggs. personally i couldnt see dela getting to excited over 18m for hamsik it would have to be closer to 30m.

if he can spend 50m+ without having to sell a lot of players i can say napoli is definitely not a selling club! pazzini would be great but it really annoys me we could of got him for 8m last january. dela says mazzarri will be a lot more involved in which players will be bought which is surely a good thing!

“Biagio Del Giudice (Aversa Normanna) Aversa Normanna – Cisco Roma 0 – 0: Buona la sua prova. Resiste agli attacchi della squadra laziale e tiene inviolata la sua porta.”

ive heard of him before apparently hes having a really good season…who knows maybe him and luigi sepe will be the future goalkeepers and local to boot!
