Excuses, excuses, excuses!!

So it was the pitch’s fault, or maybe it was because the team wants to attack too much and we were too shiny. “More often than not, teams who come to the Stadio San Paolo defend in an exaggerated manner – playing for two results out of three.” (What does that mean?) A few incidents also went against us today. Take Marek Hamsik who missed in front of the goalkeeper. That was like an open-play penalty” (What?) So it’s Hamsik’s fault he missed Napoli’s one and only clear cut chance at home To Bologna. “The teams are here in Naples to make the Barricades and then set off on the break.” We know this, we’ve known this all season, yet you have no counteractive plan. Pioli did it last year with Chievo and he did it again this year, Dear Meza Latrina Mazzari all week we knew Bologna would be set up with a five man back line that would snuff out the threat from Napoli’s two wing backs but did you do anything about it, could you have done anything about it? You play three centre backs against a team not willing to attack and two defensive midfielders, leaving the trident stacked against seven Bologna players.
You say players performed below par but yet you refuse to make a change and subsitute said players. Your wishy washy excuses and watch tapping histrionics are getting old, Napoli’s players are better than your one dimensional tactic and formation, with the attacking players we have we shouldn’t struggle to create chances at home. You wont sign a new contract, Good, no loss to me… You think you will get a better job than Napoli, no chance, you’ll be sacked after three weeks….

Peter Griffin or Dustin Hoffman could do a better job…

I don’t know if there is any point in doing a match report, if you’re a Napoli fan then you know exactly how this match panned out. For 10/20 minutes we played well and should have taken the lead, Bolonga go down the other end and score a goal caused by a defensive mistake. Then Bologna pull all their players back into their own half and defend the lead. Napoli struggle to break them down and get a slice of luck and equalise with a Cavani penalty. Mazzari then throws on the kitchen sink to try and get a winner, meanwhile the Napoli defense is left unbalanced by the substitutions and Bolonga could and should have found a winning goal. Watching Napoli at home to the lower placed teams is like fucking groundhog day. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.” Well we only expect one result but it never comes.

De Sanctis =6 Not much to do during the game cept the goal and a good save made at the end.
Campagnaro =4 At fault for the goal, added nothing going forward and was too shaky in defence
Cannavaro= 5.5 Tackled well but couldnt organise a nervy defence, his long range passing was terrible.
Aronica =6 The best of the 3 man defence but thats not saying a lot. Still makes the left hand side with Dossena a worry. Tried to start the play with his diagonal balls and came out of defence with good results.
Maggio =2 Worst display ever from Superbike, was kicked twice in the opening minutes and shrinked from any involvement after. Couldn’t control the ball, couldn’t pass the ball, couldn’t tackle and could barely run but still lasted 82 minutes on the field. (Mind Boggling)
Dossena =4 Not much better play on the left, can’t beat his man and his crosses are aimless, he isn’t sharp, so many attcks break down at his feet. We need another left wing back FAST. We can’t have Andrea playing there all season and Zuniga is no replacement for him.
Inler =5 Another poor shift from Inler, his play was too slow, couldn’t control the ball, mistimed tackles and gave away cheap possession. Hasnt had a good game in weeks.
Gargano =6 Little Walter had it all to do, picked up the slack from the other midfielders and ran hard, covered every inch of pitch and was left to dictate the play, which we knows is not his forte.
Hamsik =6 Missed another good chance in front of goal, tried to make amends by driving forward but could create no more chances.
Pandev =6 Napoli’s best player but still was too ineffective. Had no space to play into and was harried by at least two Bologna players every time he got the ball.
Cavani =6 Was a ghost for most of the match, got no room and no service, had to come deep for the ball but the play usually bypassed him. Took his penalty well.

Zuniga =6 Came on for Campagnaro early in the second half, was better than Maggio but then again that wouldn’t have been hard. Made a great covering tackle late on to deny Di Vaio and Bolonga the win.
Vargas =5 Came on with five minutes to go, created some danger while wide on the right but gave the ball away again with a stupid back heel on the edge of the Bolonga box that resulted in a Bolonga attack.
Luccarelli =N/A Pointless sub, stood waiting to come on for five minutes and when he did get on the whistle was blown straight after.

Mazzari =1 Clueless.

Madness. Exactly, why would we swap our most explosive potential star to Udinese for a defender we could buy anyway. Insigne should be in our squad next season but you know it wont happen, he’ll be loaned out again or gone in some co-ownership swap like that one with Undinese. Only in Italia do you see deals like this. Give away your young talent then have to buy them back at aged 24 or 25. Bring him home and play him, we didnt have to sign Vargas if we had him this season. And if he is good enough for Arsenal and Man city to be interested in him surely he is good enough to be in our squad. But i suppose Mazzari wouldn’t play him anyway, Luccarelli would be in before him.

For those of you who can read Italian, excellent article basically itching about the same things we’re saying here:

    http://www.tuttonapoli.net/index.php?action=read&idnotizia=79854

Basically, the main issues this season are against smaller teams that play with 2 defenders on each side out wide negating our flanks, putting 3 players in the CM, snuffing out our 2 men there and then hounding our back line with pressing, forcing them to launch long balls up top where our 3 man front is then up against 6-7 defenders. All the smaller teams do this to us, and yet Mazz trots out the same BS formation every time. But more fundamentally, at the core of the Serie A failure are the following issues:

-a complete mishandling of Inler. By playing in this formation with only Gargano at his side and up against 3 CM, Mazz is asking him to be both Van Bommel and Pirlo at the same freaking time. Inler has been great when there is space and when we aren’t outnumbered in CMF.

-The 3-man backline is a wasted body in the back. It easily becomes unbalanced and gives up too many chances (I wrote about this after the win at Palermo). So you have Campa normally pushing up, so why not just play with another body in CMF and forget the stupid offensive duties for a CD?

-Dossena and Maggio (and Zuniga) are very good when they have space to run at defenders at speed. They are wasted when they have to go up against 2 defenders as they are not dribblers. Asking Hamsik or Pandev or Inler or whoever to go outt wide in this stupid formation, just leaves the other guys more isolated when the inevitable cross comes in.

These 3 main issues are all caused by the incredibly hard-headed insistance of playing a 3-4-3. Mazz has the personnel perfectly suited for a 4-3-3. It would give us much more in-game tactical flexibility: you want to keep 2 guys out wide to close down our flanks? Well, we’ll counter with 2-3 of our own and still have 3-4 guys in the middle to receive crosses. You want to flood the CMF, well we’ll counter with 3 of our own giving Inler more space to do what he used to do at Udinese. If you’re stacking guys behind the ball, we’ll put Hamsik as one of the MF to give us more offensive punch. If you play more attack-minded, we’ll push Hamsik up front and play Dzemaili or Donadel in CMF and break on the counter.

Right now, we are in a very weird place. We have a much better chance of beating Milan in a few weeks in Milan than we do of beating Siena in Siena on Sunday. That goes completely to the coaching and tactics. Oh, and thank God we didn’t have to hear the “we were concentrating on CL excuse that Mazz constantly fell back on earlier in the season. No Mazz, this has nothing to do with CL and fatigue. You’ve been exposed for the amatuer tactician that you are!!

Sorry about the long post, but yesterday really pissed me off!!

I doubt that this Insigne swap actually comes to fruition. The only somewhat sensible reason I can think of is if the swap was to occur this window which would give our backline another reinforcement. Even that seems like an absurd move to make. However, if this move does happen it really shows how distant the board are to the tifosi. A few months ago Napoli Fans London did a piece on how the relationship between the board and the tifosi was beginning to sour. Take Juventus for example last year there was talks of selling Marchisio and the ultras said Marchisio is not to be touched. In this instance the fans really needed to be heard.

ciro, the misuse of Inler is the biggest problem for me. DeLaurentis and Bigon gave Mazz this prize over the summer on a silver platter. Other than Pirlo, someone please name for me a better “regista” for CMF in Serie A. This is (IMHO) the most important position to get correct on a soccer pitch and Inler represents a HUGE leap in quality over what we had last year (no offense to Pazienza or Yebda who were both solid). In games vs top opposition, he has shined and has even allowed Gargano to resurrect his Napoli career when lots of folks (including me) thought he was done. But Mazz’s tactics just waste him vs smaller sides where amazingly many precious pts have been lost. But really, it shouldn’t surprise us – he did have Cigarini here and never got anything out of him either.

Tom, I can almost understand if this was going to happen now. Sometimes you sacrifice a future prospect for an immediate need (especially when you’re in the CL). But from what I’m reading in the Italian press, this is being completed now, but for a June execution which makes no sense to me since you can just take your time and buy a CD for the summer w/o giving up your top, homegrown attacking prospect!

ctruppi, do you know if its a full swap or 50-50 ownership type deal that italian clubs love? I assume by letting insigne go that pandev would almost certainly be staying? also i hope we can hold on to cavani or this deal will leave us short on the attacking front.

ctruppi thanks for the article summary, it’s definitely a clear sign something is wrong when Cavani is consistently dropping back to midfield and beyond, as well as on the wing delivering crosses. Pandev made every touch an important one yesterday but too often, like Cavani, has to track back to receive the ball. We can’t expect to attack through the middle if our CF supposedly at the top of the trident is consistently initiating attacks all the way back in half field. This is why the ball just gets lobbed over nonchalantly to players like Maggio, Dossenna, Hamsik…This is buttocks backwards as they should be the ones supplying, but are in a system where they cannot. You couldn’t be more right about Inler. After I wrote that post complaining about his potential not being reached, his performances seemed to improve, however you’re right in that we can’t forget he really is one of the best at his position right now. I’m afraid Mazzarri’s old praise for Cavani as a ‘complete modern striker’ is turning into a dependence on his work rate and not his main attributes. The same goes with Inler, who is, to us observant Napoli fans still one of the best CM’s in the league, you just wouldn’t know it because he is overloaded with roles on the pitch thanks to Mazzarri. I suppose we are getting back to what Neil has been saying in that this is great players in an average system. Too often we are tormented by the Brit nnouncers saying, upon Hamsik receiving the ball, something to the effect ‘one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe.’ Yet, all of us know he is not one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe, although he COULD be. Cavani was our headless chicken last year given free reign to do whatever he wanted, but the system doesn’t work if everyone on the pitch is a headless chicken. I’ve always been reluctant to criticize Mazzarri, he seems to have the occasional genius gameplan, but takes a clear confident tactical vision to tell a player how to remain in certain regions of the pitch, and he does not seem to be able to do that. After a prime week where most of the upper echelon dropped points, Bologna was a must win game. What confuses me the hell out of me is that Mazzarri knows exactly what the problem is, he’s said it in multiple press conferences.

If we don’t get 9 points out of the next three games than I don’t see us getting a CL spot. C’mon, Genoa are 4 points behind us. Tied with Roma who are no doubt much worse on paper than Napoli, not to mention the fact they had to adopt a totally new tactical system along with countless injuries to star defenders.

The timing of Mazzarri talking about his contract running out in 2013 is not an accident – I believe he was criticized after the very tight 2-1 win over Cesena’s B team and didn’t think it was warranted.

Following that up with a below average performance against Bologna really makes you think. It’s a love/hate relationship with Mazzarri. After wins over teams like Inter and Man City you love the guy, but when you see him being outmanaged by others who have emerging talent/pedestrian players to work with, you come to hate him.

Napoli has leaked a goal or more in 7 straight matches – 2 vs. Lecce, 1 vs. Novara, 3 vs. Roma, 1 vs. Genoa, 1 vs. Palermo, 1 vs. Cesena, and now 1 vs. Bologna. Last shutout was the famous 2-0 win over Villarreal. The back is not as air tight as last season even though De Sanctis is playing as well.

Even though the goals for might be up, the team can’t find a late goal like last season. I think we are seeing that Mazzarri is a short term wonder. His tactical plans are one dimensional and repetitive. Take away the two big early season wins vs. Milan and Inter, and Napoli’s Serie A campaign is not satisfactory. Even with the 2 big wins it’s getting stuck in a battle for 4th to 7th rather than the top 3.

    Much improvement is needed.

christopher, reminds me of an excellent editorial a few weeks back in an Italian paper comparing Nocerino – a good player having a stellar season, to Inler – a great player having an inconsistent, good season. The writer then asks if anyone believes that if the 2 players switch clubs, would the same thing happen? Would Nocerino be stellar at Napoli while Inler remains average at Milan? The writer argues that while Mazz is able to get players with individual strenghts (Cavani, Lavezzi now Pandev) to stand out, he is unable to get tactical, team players to consistently play well because he doesn’t design systems to take advantage of their strenghts (we’re seeing this with Hamsik as opposing coaches are learning how to deal with his positioning and movement).

The fact that Lavezzi can dribble past players or Cavani has an amazing instinct for goal have nothing to do with Mazz and his tactics. The fact that Nocerino excels at Milan has everything to do with Allegri’s tactical nous. Unfortunately, I think we have reached our ceiling in Serie A with Mazz as he obviously is unable to cope with what opposing coaches put up against him and that Cavani’s late-game miracles have dried up. I hope we can keep moving forward in CL, but I really think that for Napoli to reach the next level, we need a high-end, premier coach (Ancellotti, Ranieri, etc).

The most telling story about Mazzarri’s tactics is our performance in Europa league group stages last yr vs champions league performance this year. We barely qualified as the clear favorite last yr, while thiz year i would say our performances were very good. Insigne is not going to be sold. Napoli’s management is not that stupid. I’m excited for this game on sunday. Can’t wait to see our brilliant coach use the same tactics and cost us more points… if we didnt advance in CL i think he would have been gone by now.

This biggest thing about Mazz (IMO) is the fact that he is so stubborn, he is not willing to admit that he himself can do a better job of coaching. I read an article about Pep Guadiola using a 3-5-2 because he wanted to play to his strengths. A coach for Barcelona trying to change tactics.

And then we have a coach that is limited by his stubbornness. Right we are tired because of the travels of the South Americans. Well from what I saw Hamsik and Maggio played horrible, what were their excuses?

And what is this constant griping about the pitch? What’s wrong with the pitch?

MY HOPE is that he is like Belicheck and says all these stupid things to the media, whereas he speaks a different tone to his players.

Maybe we can bring back Spalletti? I would say Ancelotti, but forget it now.

And it looks like DeLa said that Insigne is going nowhere. Damn media

We do need another defender. Bocchetti please?
