Derby Del Sud preview

By: Neil | January 24th, 2009

Just three points separate Napoli and Roma as the two sides do battle on Sunday in a game both teams will be desperate to win. Roma is expecting captain and talisman Francesco Totti to return to the lineup, but if and when he plays will be up to Spalletti. Napoli will rely on number three goalie Matteo Gianello who will earn his second straight start.

On the opening day of the season these teams met at the Stadio Olimpico with 10-man Napoli getting a goal from Hamsik to earn a 1-1 draw. Here are the highlights from last August’s entertaining game.

After that game the two teams went in opposite directions, with Napoli climbing to the top of the league and Roma sinking towards the bottom. The last two months has seen the trend reversed with Roma climbing a long way up the table to put themselves back in contention for a Champions League place. Napoli has started to free fall, and although they are in 5th place and still ahead of Roma, the team’s form has not looked good in recent weeks.

Napoli’s two notable absences are midfielder Marek Hamsik, who is suspended, and Gennaro Iezzo who is still battling back problems. Number two keeper Nico Navarro is also injured, so backing up Gianello will be Luigi Sepe. Let’s hope that Gianello doesn’t get injured or sent off.

Replacing Hamsik will be Michele Pazienza, who didn’t look very good in his last start against Torino. Other changes included Santacroce returning from injury to replace Rinaudo, and Zalayeta starting instead of German Denis. Here is an interview with Reja (in Italian) in which he explains his selection choices and talks about playing two big matches in four days.

Napoli probable lineup: Gianello – Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini – Maggio, Blasi, Gargano, Pazienza, Mannini – Zalayeta, Lavezzi

For news about Roma, please check out the Roma offside The Giallorossi lost their Coppa Italia quarter final on Wedensday against Inter and many of the players who played a full game will start against Napoli on Sunday. The Giallorossi are also expecting the return of keeper Alexandre Doni, as well as Totti.

Watch the game live on RAI International. However, in Canada TLN is showing the Lazio – Cagliari game which is surprising because they usually pick up the RAI feed. If you don’t have a dish, there’s always a live internet stream.

Key question for Roma: How will the team react, both mentally and physically, to their midweek Coppa Italia loss to Inter?

Key question for Napoli: Can the team rediscover their best form without Hamsik and Iezzo?

too carry on that conversation from the previous post my god how can you support napoli and be civil to a roma fan?!!!! i dont wish harm to any of them but i certainly will never be civil with one concerning football! my mind set is not small thats the nature of a rivalry?! its like me being civil to a sunderland or newcastle fan its madness! or a palermo fan being civil to a catanese?! regarding napoli fans it isnt just football its a religion to them. and i cant control my emotions? of course i cant its football thats the whole point!

Yes, football is a religion to the Napoli fans. But much like theological religions, people show their devotion in different ways. For example, I write blog after blog after blog. Sometimes when Napoli loses I get really pissed off and I don’t want to write, but I do it anyways.

There’s nothing wrong with banter but there’s no need to pick on people just because they support Roma. Now, if you want to poke fun at them if they miss out on a Champions League spot at the end of the year, that’s something else.

fair enough. i would never fully abuse a fellow follower of serie because it isnt my place too. only when it comes too football just a bit of banter. if it was an englishman then thats a different story because the north south divide is full on and local rivalries are pretty bad as well!

Sorry, even though I want Napoli to win this game, I would like to see Roma win the CL. Who am I supposed to want win? Juve? Inter? Man United? Per favore, I would mutch rather see Totti lift the CL trophy inRome. A loyal player, helped Italia win the WC, and it would be fitting for him to do it in the Olimpico.

    That said, Forza Napul!

totti maybe but not roma. they are the most egotistical club in serie a they think they deserve to win games by just walking out onto the pitch. they are weak minded and rely to much on him. although totti is an absolute super player. would rather see barcelona win it they play the best football on the planet and messi has just stepped up a level if he keeps going the way he is then he will be up there with maradona, pele, zidane etc.
i reckon if we keep moving up the ladder get in the champions league, build a quality squad capable of winning the scudetto with just that one extra world class player, if aurelio broke the bank, messi woud come to us. im quite pissed off that diego is telling them all to go to inter i thought he would be pushing them towards us imagine aguero in this team

Don’t be so harsh about your team. I am a Roma supporter and think that you played pretty well, especially without Hamsik. And maybe Mexes was offside at the first goal.

Really bad luck! 1. Napoli goal disallowed as being played off the arm when it actually was played off the shoulder/chest. 2. Offiside Roma goal allowed. 3. Napoli player (who was it?) tries to prevent ball from going out, which results in a Roma corner kick instead of a touch line throw-in; corner kick results in a Roma goal. On some days everything you do goes against you. Today was one of those days.
