De Sanctis, Quags, Hamsik Poised to Reach World Cup
By: Neil | October 8th, 2009Can any of the longtime Napoli fans remember the last time a World Cup player played his club football for Napoli? Nobody in ‘06, ‘02, and probably ‘98 as well. I don’t know how far back you’d have to go. The draught will end soon, as De Sanctis, Quagliarella, and Hamsik can book a place in South Africa this weekend. Both Italy and Slovakia need only draws to qualify as group winners. Italy has an away match against the Republic of Ireland, while Slovakia has a home match against Slovenia.
De Sanctis is a veteran of the ‘06 squad, and given Marcello Lippi’s selections over the last year it’s unlikey he’ll lose his place unless he picks up an injury. If he starts leaking bad goals he’ll likely be replaced, but I don’t expect that to happen.

Lippi’s policy of sticking with the same group of players also bodes well for Quagliarella, who isn’t really on form right now. Quags was first called up by Donadoni in ‘07, and played briefly in Euro 2008. He’s managed to keep a regular place in the squad since Lippi took over, which is difficult given the competition for striker spots.

Quagliarella and Di Natale
If Slovakia wins or draws on Saturday, Marek Hamsik will qualify for his first major tournament. The Slovaks have arguably had a bit of luck with group favourites Czech Republic and Poland being in a downswing and not having very good qualifying campaigns. Hamsik has been instrumental in Slovakia’s 6 wins in 8 qualifying matches thus far, and could be a star next summer.

Hello, everyone!
Im very happy to be part of this excellent blog on a regular basis again in the future. I sustained a serious muscle-injury over a month ago during a football-match but Im regaining my fitness-level and Im well on my way to 100%.
Very much has happened during my absence! Mr. Donadoni and Mr. Marino is gone and new people has arrived to participate in Mr. Laurentiis´ ambitious project.I just read many of the posts and comments and I agree with the concerns about the future formation. Lets just hope Mr. Mazzarri will not continue the terrible tradition.
Regarding Luca Toni theres not much to think about. Get him in a SSCN-jersey as soon as possible! He is an excellent striker and he would be an exceptional addition to our current squad. With Toni(100% fitness level) in the box our teams offensive would be too much to handle for many opponents. He is much more than a tall and heavy player and has many qualities to offer Mr. Mazzarri and the club. On deadball situations and corners he will be the main focus-point for the opponent leaving much needed space for other Napoli-players to take advantage of. Some say he is past his prime but I dont believe that to be correct. How is he supposed to show the world that he can still score goals, when he isnt allowed to play!? He is highly motivated and with highly intelligent players like our La-Ham-Quag-trio, he will still score many goals every season. Futhermore he has played in every major tournament a footballer can, and these experiences good as bad, would be of great significance for the every player in the squad, taking the next step towards european competitions.
Lets see a 4 man def-line against Bologna, win the game and get some confidence before the matches against Fiorentina, Milan and Juventus.Im glad to be back and I wish you all a very good day!

Guys,
the new era isn’t started yet and you already speak about strikers?
When will you understand that the TOP priority is to fix our DEFENSE?
How many more goals do we have to get in order for you to realize how shitty our back line is?
Have you guys ever seen playing Ferrara, Carannante, Fabio Cannavaro, Renica, Corradini and Bruscolotti or maybe Kroll?
And do you recognize any of our current midfielders like Bagni, De Napoli, Fusi, Romano or Alemao?
People, we need real players. We need players that scream at each other on the field when we are down during the game. We need players that get upset when they lose a game. We need players that run after the opponents everywhere on the field and even in the showers. We need players that are worth every single penny De Laurentiis paid for!
Let’s fix the back line first and then we will talk about the strikers.
Neil, what is your thought?
Please people argue me.Have a nice day and always and forever FORZA NAPOLI!

Hey Gennaro,
I think we are all in agreement that the defense needs fixing. The problem is, who are we going to get? Who is avaialble? For as much improved we got from last season, we still have a long ways to go.
I’m already disapponted by how the season started. The squad still does not have enough depth when there are injuries/suspensions.
Again it all goes to the personnel decisions made. Who is avilable?

I agree with you, Gennaro!
We need to look for some class-players for the back-line, no matter if its going to be a 3 or 4 man defence. But that doesnt rule out talk concerning other positions. I´ve seen all the mentioned players in action but Ruud Kroll and Bruscolotti. Some of them helped build the foundation of the golden era, and some were playing during the golden era and fought to keep the project continually reach new levels. Only F.Cannavaro played after the golden era. Sure we all remember those days and I understand that you want the current players to not only feel the passion, but to actively live with it every day like the people and players did back then. To do that the current team-members and staff-members themselves need to go through those phases of building up a great team and add to that every season. Its an important proces and it wont happen automatically. Eventually the team and the city will become such a strong entity resulting in a unique team-supporter-feeling, which will be able to withstand almost everything. The passion and the memories are still alive within us all, but much has changed during the last almost 20 years. We have been through relegations, frustration and all the way back to where we are today. We have a new foundation, a very solid one and SSC Napoli will be a top-team in the future, no doubt, but I know from my own experience that patience often is in short supply when you have certain expectations.
Our time will come, but of course theres no need to postpone a new golden era by poor decision-making.
I truly believe that Mr. Laurentiis has learn alot during the years and these experiences will hopefully bring us closer to another european adventure – thats the first step. With that being said, it would be madness not to consider Luca Toni for a new 3 man attack if a deal could be reached. It would be a huge boost for the club to sign a player like Toni, and it would be a great victory for the new direction of leadership. This could prove to attract other players and world-class staff-members. We still need to wait and see, maybe Mr. Mazzarri has different plans and thinking about signing some of his former players.
Time will tell us.Posted from

Goal.com has an article of the snubbed starting XI for Italy. I have to say, I like some of the players on it. What do you guys think about it.

De Sanctis wasn’t in WC2006, but yeah he will be going.
Also, Hamsik’s hair…goddamn, someone needs to send Oddo on loan to Napoli.

Hamsik’s hair is badass, he would look like a 14 year old slovak schoolboy otherwise.

Anybody know who played in the number 6 shirt for Napoli in June 1991?

That is the period when Napoli had Alessandro Renica playing number 6. The year after, Napoli had the French guy Laurent Blanc.

if napoli signs molinaro i will seriously stop watching. hes one of the worst players ive ever seen and if dela would pay for him then he really doesnt have a clue about football! de ceglie on the other hand…
i just cant understand why vitale was treated so badly he played quality for the 1st half of last season its the whole team that fell apart. he was the only player that had come through the primavera as well which is very worrying considering the talent from naples

Thanks Gennaro for info on No 6 shirt. It was given to me by an old friend as my mother is napolitana. He’d got it in June 1991 when he’d played with McCartney in Napoli. I’d always been curious to know the player. All I knew was that it wasn’t the number of the brilliant Mr Zola!

Greetings Napoli fans.
Thanks to everyone who picked up on my errors. De Sanctis wasn’t at World Cup ‘06 – it was Peruzzi who was the #3 keeper back then. And Napoli did have three players in France ‘98. As you might be able to guess from my errors and my lack of activity recently, I’ve been quite busy the last week and I haven’t been able to keep pace with the major changes, and I’ve had to neglect the blog a bit.
For the record, the little known Belgian defender Bertrand Crasson and his 22 minute adventure at World Cup 98 makes for a great party story. People will be eating out of your hand for the rest of the night.
What do I think of the new management team? Well, it’s clear that DeLa wants a number of people working in collaboration with him rather than leaving it all to one person and then watching things go wrong. Director of Sport Riccardo Bigon will be working with a technical director – Juve’s Gian Paolo Montali is out of the running now – but it’s unclear who will be doing exactly what. Will Mazzarri have a say in terms of which players arrive and leave? It seems like the lawyer, Bigon, will look after the business side of things, and the technical director will be responsible for the football side of things. Naturally DeLa will have an active role, extending beyond going into the dressing room after a loss and verbally abusing the players.
There is a lot of work to be done off the field before the on field product will be good again. Lavezzi wants out, and he might use a loophole to buy out the remainder of his contract. Same applies for Gargano. Mazzarri has some important decisions to make and the club needs a football person working with Bigon very soon.
That’s all I have to say for now… enjoy the World Cup qualifiers!

If Lavezzi and Gargano are moaning and crying again, and we suck with them, I say sell them and get the money and some quality players in return
I am so sick of this crap. Have they seen our record?????

“And if we lose, it is only me who is to blame.”
mazzarri is saying all the right things. cant wait to see what he can get out of the team although the thought of contini on the pitch makes me uneasy.
this is the type of player that i would love to see in the team!

Lou, I’m getting the reports from the football italia website. I think it’s the best English language source for good reliable news. Here is the link

remember when i said we could of signed bocchetti?
i fucking despise marino.

Thanks Neil. It sucks reading Lavezzi wants out. Do you think it all comes down to wages, or is he just sick of losing?
Posted from

I think it’s wages. DeLa’s wage structure is holding back the project. Not getting Canna because DeLa didn’t want to pay a million a year for a 36 year old isn’t the fault of Marino, Donadoni, or the players.
