Champions League Final: Napoli 0 Lazio 0
By: Neil | November 22nd, 2009Before the game Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri told his team to treat the game “like a Champions League Final.” Well, if you saw the game – and I really hope you didn’t – you know that neither team treated the game like any kind of final. I don’t recall one good Napoli scoring chance and aside from Mauro Zarate there wasn’t a single player doing anthing noteworthy in the offensive zones. Even though Napoli’s performance was concerning, the one point was more than Fiorentina, Genoa, Cagliari, and Bari earned so our position in the standings doesn’t really suffer. Things aren’t so bad after all.
I was reluctant to include the highlights because it’s mostly broken plays and half chances but there might be some people out there who enjoy boring 0-0 Italian stalemates.
Here’s some bonus footage of Mazzarri explaining how Napoli had a great second half:
I honestly don’t know how to do a write up of a game with so little action. It’s not like there was all kinds of great defending that I can comment on. To be fair Lazio defended well for the whole ninety minutes, but Napoli didn’t put up much of a fight. On the other side Rinaudo was the only Napoli player who might score higher than a 6.0 in le pagelle.
Man of the Match has to be Mauro Zarate. He spent most of the game trying to work some magic all by himself and in the second half he looked like the most dangerous player on the pitch. For a while I was genuinely worried he might get Lazio a smash and grab win but for all his skill in dribbling through the Napoli midfield and defence he never got himself a great scoring chance. The ref also deserves some mention. It’s not often that the ref puts in a better performance than the players, but Saccani managed just that on Sunday.
I will say this however: when Mazzarri said that Napoli would treat the game like a CL final, I was expecting a smooth Napoli side firing on all cylinders. About the 80th minute I realized that Mazzarri had bullshitted us about how Napoli would play… but why? The only thing I can think of is that he’s giving more priority to Thursday’s Coppa Italia match against Cittadella and next Sunday’s trip to fifth place Parma. For those of you who have followed Serie A for a long time, you’ll know that Guidolin knows what he is doing and that Parma’s position in the table is no fluke. Also the Coppa Italia represents a great way to qualify for Europe if Napoli can reach the final, so it’s reasonable to assume that Mazzarri will be taking both those games a lot more seriously.
Napoli’s record under Mazzarri is now 3-3-0 for 12 points from a possible 18. If Napoli had played at this clip the entire season, the team would now be in 3rd place with 26 points. Although the last two games maybe haven’t gone as planned, these 0-0 results are a sign that our defence is moving in the right direction. The team isn’t leaking goals like earlier in the season and Rinaudo looked very good on the left, i.e. much better than Contini.
Up front I’m wondering how healthy Quagliarella is. If he’s injured, give him some time off to let him heal properly. I hate when players get a long term injury because they tried to play through a short term injury. If the game was important it might make sense but these games won’t really define Napoli’s season.
I will conclude with an abbreviated version of le pagelle: every Lazio player falls between 5.5 and 6.5, and every Napoli player falls between 5.5 and 6.5. There was really nothing separating the two teams and by the end of the game the individuals simply blurred together to make 22 men chasing a ball on a pitch. I should have slept in.
Next up is Cittadella on Thursday. I have no idea if I’ll be able to catch the game or not, but I can guarantee one thing : it won’t be another boring 0-0 draw. Forza Napoli!

Quags looks frustrated as hell. Considering e hasn’t provided much, we are still in a solid position.
I’m just baffled how we can score 3 goals away against Juve, but zero goals against Catania and Lazio?
We need some help on the offensive end.

A lot of Lazio’s strategy was sticking 9 or 10 men behd the ball and soaking up Napoli’s pressure. The closer the ball was to the goal the tighter Lazio defended.

“…by the end of the game the individuals simply blurred together to make 22 men chasing a ball on a pitch. I should have slept in.” Exactly my thoughts on the match.
It’s a good point Luigi, something is wrong when Napoli can put up three against Juventus in the second half at Torino and not create a single good scoring chance against Lazio at home. The team lacked spark, regardless of how well Lazio defended. When Hamsik disappears you know its going to be a long game.
Not sure what it will take to make this team consistently perform at a high level every week. Perhaps the lack of a true leader on the pitch? Someone who can really lead by example. Too often they look directionless for large spells of the game.

there are a few problems with the team just off the top of my head no target man, no leader, too play with a back 3 the central defender has to be a rock (paolo is certainly not that), no height in midfield, no ball winner and players are trying to seriously play like they are world beaters.
the management seem to think lavezzi is the player that can conjure that moment of magic consistently but i think its fair to say he certainly isnt. for this team to progress he has to go. how many times does he collect the ball in midfield and then completely fuck it up??
very good point neil, about lazios defending yesterday every time we went to attack i was completely shocked by how quickly they had so many men behind the ball! i have to say that it was partly down to napolis passing, we get the ball and instead of moving it around quicker players just hold it up and slow everything down
dela and bigon have still got a lot of work to do lets hope they can get it done. one more thing to say that we played lazio yesterday you would never of known it was a derby game would you?? absolutely no passion whatsoever

what would be ideal is to get a player on loan (or buy dela!) in the mould of gilardino, pazzini, luca toni that would partner quags upfront. lavezzi is constantly collecting the ball in random parts of the pitch when he and quags should be playing off eachother

haha thats a scudetto winning team!
i think the formation will probably a few first teamers and then some of the fringe players like hoffer, maybe amodio people like that. cigarini has to play from the start thse are the types of games that can really build confidence
i keep seeing articles about swap deals with lazio involving cigarini and santacroce…not only would we lose out on two italian talents we would be getting to troublemakers that havent played for half a season??? wheres the logic in that?

Lavezzi would never pass me the ball… ahahahahahha

Looks like Rinaudo was suspended 3 games for hitting Cruz after Cruz bit the man? Who does that – don’t answer that Mike Tyson…

jermain defoe bit mascherano once….
“There have been plenty of contacts with Napoli as the president there likes Acquafresca. I have also spoken to the president. The reason the move failed in the summer is because the player did not feel ready to take on a big challenge at a major club.” bobby freshwaters agent
shame he couldnt arrive in january hes the bombastic striker thats needed for the formation, look at what pazzini did when he went to samp. we lack a focal point upfront definitely
shame about rinaudo and a shame he didnt actually connect with cruz he was horrific last sunday couldnt believe how much he cheats
will be good when aronica is fit (or was he suspended?) then we have two decent palermitano down the left instead of clueless contini and zuniga

Yeah I want to see Hoffer get some solid time. I think we gave up on him before we found out what he has to (H)offer. Speaking of Jermain Defoe, 5 goals last weekend??? A hat trick in 7 minutes!? That game was outrageous. If only Napoli looked like that..

Actually, Maggio had the best chance of the game early on. That being said, Napoli struggled again vs a team bunkered in defense mode. The problem is that the Napoli we saw Sunday is perfectly suited to a free-flowing team like Milan or Juve. This set-up is horrible vs a team looking to get out of town with a nice 0-0 tie (and 1 point in the standings). Lazio used the old playbook to slow down Napoli that we saw starting Dec last season: shut down the running lanes for Lavezzi and Hamsik (which Lazio did very well). Keep Maggio occupied with a wide attacking option on his side (Kolarov). This will force Napoli to filter the ball through their central mids (Gargano/Pacienza on Sunday) or on the left (Zuniga). All 3 of these players are terrible in a build up, possession offense vs a deep defending team.
I wish Mazzari would stop playing “scared” vs these opponents and start Datolo on the left and Cigarini in the middle. This would give Napoli wide options on both sides of the offense and a player who can actually pass a ball into traffic in the middle. I would also tell Maggio to sit back if their wide mid is shadowing him and slip either Lavezzi or Hamsik to that wide side (a sort of hybrid 4-4-2 from the obcvious 3-4-3). This will force the defense to slide their wide-mid back to help (thus freeing up Maggio for some forays) or leave their wide-back isolated which is not a good option vs Hamsik or Lavezzi.
Just me 2 cents!

a very fine 2 cents as well ctruppi! completely agree with everything you said.
never thought i would say this but i wouldnt mind denis playing from the start on thursday see how the 3-4-3 works with an actual target man. with lavezzi and quags they are always collecting the ball outside the box

NAPOLI (3-4-3): Iezzo; Grava, Rinaudo, Contini; Zuniga, Cigarini, Bogliacino, Rullo; Dàtolo, Denis, Pià. All. Mazzarri
CITTADELLA (4-4-2): Villanova; Manucci, Pisani, Battaglia, Marchesan; Oliveira, Dalla Bona, Musso, Pettinari; Iunco, Ardemagni. All. Foscarini
ARBITRO: Domenico Celi di Campobasso (Conca-Marrazzo. Tozzi)
thats what tutto napoli has as the probable formation could be interesting where the fuck has rullo been???

Guys,
Is Zenga fired?Vincent, I like your team. The only thing is that I would like to switch with Luigi in the second half. I like the right wing better.
Zenga and Donadoni are in the bowling team now. LoL.
