Catania vs. Napoli: Giornata 37
By: Neil | May 22nd, 2009This Sunday Napoli travels to the east coast of Sicily to compete against Walter Zenga’s Catania. It’s shaping up to be the most exciting game of the season, not only in Serie A but in all of Europe.
OK, let’s be honest. There’s no real reason to watch this game. The most interesting part might be the beautiful landscapes of the Sicilian coast. Last season around this time of year, under a blazing Mediterranean sun, Napoli played its worst game of the season and got spanked 3-0 by Catania. And that was when Napoli was playing well – in the final months of last season, a promising Napoli side gracefully inched up the table and sneaked into 8th place, earning an Intertoto Cup spot. This season, both the Partenopei and Etnei are going through the motions with no short term purpose. It is, as ESPN’s Derek Rae might comment, the dying embers of the schedule.
I am therefore going to provide no real preview. If you’re looking for an in depth preview, check out whatever news website you frequently visit. Yes, I am even too lazy to post links.
One note surrounding this game is Catania’s interest in Napoli defender Salvatore Aronica. I really like Aronica. He’s an ideal team player, and he works hard whenever called upon. The only thing is he doesn’t really fit in to Napoli’s 3-5-2. He looked a bit shaky playing in a three man backline when he first arrived, and he’s also seen some time at left wingback. But his best position is on the outside left – either defence or midfield – in a 4-4-2. I believe it’s the system he’s most accustomed to. Aronica has really improved as the season has progressed, and it’s a shame the tactics prevent him from showcasing his full set of talents. Since he probably won’t start at left defence for Napoli, I’d like to see him go to a team like Catania where he’d be a better fit.
In other mercato news, Napoli has reportedly turned down a 22m euro bid from Liverpool for Ezequiel Lavezzi. Today PierPaolo Marino has publicly said Lavezzi is not for sale. The Argentine forward could return from injury on Sunday.
The chances of Napoli landing Luca Cigarini are about 75% according to Parma’s d.s. (Check solonapoli.com – I tried posting this link but it wouldn’t work) There was also an alleged offer from Juventus of Cristiano Zanetti plus money for Gargano. I don’t really think Marino is considering that one.
For the summer mercato, it appears that Napoli is going to overhaul the squad. I don’t know where these names are coming from. De Ceglie and Foggia are not even on the market. Borriello is a different story. He’s not officially on the market, but I don’t think he’s essential to Milan’s plans either. Donadoni really likes Borriello, and I can see Napoli making a significant push to acquire him.
As for the players leaving? Denis, Navarro, Pazienza, and Bogliacino are indeed surplus requirements. The only thing is, Marino may have to take a loss to get Denis, Navarro, and Pazienza out the door. Bogliacino’s a different story. He’s been with the club longer, and Napoli didn’t shell out loads of money for him.
I think the idea of having an Italian core is something that can get discussed. Napoli has nine South Americans – four Argentines, four Uruguayans, and one Brazilian. The rest of the team is Italian, except for the Slovak Hamsik. With 16 Italians and 10 foreigners, isn’t the core already Italian? Two thirds of our regular keepers are Italian, our six defender are all Italian, and seven of our midfielders are Italian. The foreigners comprise one keeper, five midfielders, and four fowards. I think the issue isn’t the number of Italians we have, but the number of good Italians. Only two of our players, Maggio and Santacroce, received Italy call-ups this year. Maggio might not get called up again, and Santacroce can be considered a squad regular looking to break into the starting eleven.
Ten foreigners is not a lot, but with eight of them Argentinian or Uruguayan it can create some problems. First, the minority group is big enough to enjoy a bit of power. If there were only four or five South Americans, the group would be too small, even if all of them were key players. Second, if a small number of South Americans don’t perform as expected, it’s very easy to scapegoat the entire group. So the group is big enough to be pretty important, but small enough that it will have to fight for power. It’s a combo that has led to some division and conflict over the last couple of seasons.
If we want an Italian core, we need to bring in established Italians who have already matured. Loading up on young Italian prospects is taking a risk because their careers might not take off. Vitale is a perfect example. He showed a lot of promise early on, but spent most of the season on the bench. I’m hoping he’ll be given more chances, but once his early season form wore off he didn’t exactly earn himself loads of playing time.
That’s how I see the team’s identity. Nationality is an issue, but simply decreasing the number of South Americans and increasing the number Italians is not a solution. We need to get rid of problem players and replace them with quality ones. Comparing Zalayeta and Santacroce is a perfect example. Zalayeta has not performed well enough to justify discipline problems. On the other hand, Santacroce has enough talent that you have to put up with occasional lapses in discipline. Zalayeta goes, Santacroce stays. Lavezzi, not an Italian, has performed well enough that you have to put up with his partying. Talent reigns supreme.

You are right, could be a real snoozer. Maybe we can hope for just the opposite-nothing to gain or lose and just go forward,
I like the idea of more Italians, with a few stranieri like Lavezzi, etc… But, as you said Neil, good Italians, not scrubs.
Hopefully we can get some in this mercato

Alessio, here’s the link to the Juve for Gargano story.

We would be absolutely retarded if we went for that. Almiron, maybe. But C. Zanetti, when uninjured, has been our 2nd-best midfielder, above Tiago, Sissoko, etc. We would be a fool to give him up.

Napoli led 1-0 from a cracker by Bogliacino, Catania tied it up just before halftime through Morimoto. Game was set for a 1-1 finish when Catania got a penalty in the 88th minute. Mascara converted in the top corner and in injury time Falconieri scored a stunner – better than the Bogliacino goal – to make it 3-1.
I didn’t get a close up look at the penalty so I don’t know if it was a good call or not. Mannini was sent off for dissent a minute later, but that could have been out of frustration at the score rather than a controversial penalty.

Another road loss What else is new?
Face it, Napoli are just not that good. We have an average GK, we play with a sucky 3 man D, and we don’t score more than one goal a game because we have useless forwards. Most of our players our Serie A squad player material.
Still, we have come a long way from bankruptcy and are in Serie A next year.
And if we thought jeering P. Canna was bad, Milan ultras have brought it to a new low by jeering Maldini today!
Morons!

catania are fighting for survival. We were never going to win this one.

vincent thats exactly what ive been saying. the team isnt good enough. it all comes down to the transfers that were made. genoa used loans and co-ownerships and even brought in motta and ferrari in for frees, whereas marino just payed full price for a lot of average players.
lets just hope he has learnt his lesson and signs some real quality. definitely in need of a new defender as well. the fact juventus have signed cannavaro i think its the right time to make a push for criscito because no way he will want to sit on the bench after having such a good season, unless he will be their starting left back

Hi, everyone! My name is Jon and Im a very passionate SSC Napoli-supporter, who lives in Denmark.
I just found this blog and began reading much of the written work, which holds great content.
Its terrible to see ones favourite-team suffer.
That being said its completely nonsense to talk about purchasing a new goalkeeper. I have seen all of Navarro´s games and he has the potential to become a world-class keeper. That is the one position where I wouldnt change anything. He is only 24 years old and has improved tremendously since becoming our main-keeper. He is making very few mistakes. He still needs to improve his goal-kicks and his communication-skills. He is not far from the national-team. If Navarro were to be unhappy and wanting to leave, then we would have to look on the market, but not the way he is playing.
The goals against him is mostly due to the formation that both Mr. Reja and Mr. Donadoni prefers to play.
The 3-5-2 system just wont work with the player-material available at SSC. We need to have 4 defenders in front of Navarro. We have 3 of the players already. Santacroce on the right, Contini and Cannavaro in the centre and then I would prefer a new signing on left-back.
We have Mannini, Aronica and Vitale but none of those are the perfect match for the left back in a 4-man-line. If we were to form a 4-man-line with the current players, i would play Contini on the left and Rinaudo central with Cannavaro, Santacroce right.
Alone having a 4-man-line would earn us many points.
Everyone is talking about potential purchases, but its as important to talk about who will leave and make room for others to join. I understand that Mr. Donadoni needs to see different players in action to be able to select those players he want to use in the next season.
That being said, I would really prefer him to play the key-players every match. A player like Blasi must play, while players like Bogliacino, Grava, Amodio and Zalayeta must be satisfied with getting 10-15 minutes now and then. I would rather sell those players to make room for improvements.
If he really wants to keep and play those last mentioned players in the future and use the 3-5-2 formation, we wont qualify for europe but fight against relegation.
I also know that several key-players are out of form coming back from injuries, Gargano, Lavezzi and Maggio is still injured so he has not been able to form the best possible team so far. Mr. Donadoni also knows that when next season begins and the transfer-market has ended, the pressure on him will be alot different and it could eventually get him fired, if the team is not performing well. I dont know if he has what it takes to manage a big club, but I will give him a chance.
We must remember though that if the team fails to improve when next season has already begun, it costs alot to change headcoach, when all the summer transfers was bought for a special formation or style of play.Lets just end this terrible second-half-season with a home-win and some optimism.

I wish Donadoni would would use his influence with Antonio Cassano to bring him to Napoli. I understand that Cassano is a bit risky and erratic, and also that he may not want to leave Sampdoria where he is flourishing, but both his skills and personality would enable him to thrive in Napoli. I think the Napolitani would love him and allow Cassano to be Cassano. I also believe that Donadoni would make sure that Cassano stays sufficiently grounded so as not to cause Napoli any matches. I think there’s a mutual respect between the two. I know my hopes aren’t realistic but what else will Donadoni contribute to the Club that Edy Reja hasn’t if he doesn’t use his name and reputation to convince players to join Napoli?
Welcome Jon!

Welcome to the site Jon. Obviously you’ve been following Napoli quite closely. I agree with most of what you said. The question with Navarro isn’t about his talent but about his work ethic.
I thought Don would use 4 defenders from the start, but as Gianfranco from the Milan offside pointed out he’s using what the team is comfortable with for the rest of the year. Let’s hope he changes in the offseason because the current roster isn’t built for a 3-5-2.
Peter, you’ve spoken for all Napoli fans when you say Cassano would be perfect for Napoli. But don’t keep your hopes up – Napoli would have to change it’s entire wage structure to bring in Cassano.

“Napoli would have to change it’s entire wage structure to bring in Cassano”
or to accommodate lavezzi. hes apparently after 3m a season. definitely hasnt earnt it and its pissed me off that hes even asking for more.
some links saying de laurentiis has fucked acquafresca off and now napoli are interested in lucarelli, nilmar and obafemi martins.
lucarelli= yes. as long as he is brought in as a backup striker
martins= absolutely not. i know a lot of newcastle fans and can honestly say hes absolutely shite. pace and thats it he cant hit a barn door.
nilmar= didnt napoli sign a south american who had already flopped in europe? no more south americans until the ones we actually have start putting the effort in.acquafresca would be perfect an up and coming hungry italian who hs proven he can score goals in serie a. then de la says hes to young?! hasnt he always said he wants to focus on youth? im starting to wonder if de laurentiis is cut out to run a football club.
out of any player in the world (apart from lionel messi of course) i would love to see in a napoli shirt its cassano. hes the type of player a team needs if they want to get into the champions league and he would be idolised by the fans. maybe not this season but if napoli do well next season who knows…
welcome jon! sort of agree with you over navarro he can make some class saves, but then hes made some awful mistakes, school boy stuff. a team cant function without feeling secure from the keeper up so im all for getting nother keeper or a young prospect like consigli from atalanta fight navarro for the gloves

Nilmar??? Oh HELL no!
I wouldn’t mind seeing us sign someone like Diego Lugano on a free. He is class and would fit in for a tranfer to a 4 man D.
Cassano would be very nice, but I doubt it will happen. I think Dela may be a wee bit too emotional at the moment. Let the season finish and work from then on

im starting to really doubt the future of this team. de laurentiis has stated he doesnt think acquafresca is mature enough to play for napoli, yet he is hellbent on keeping hamsik who has just completely given up?! freshwater has scored 12 goals this season and is the future of the national team what the fuck is de laurentiis logic for not wanting him?
now there are reports nilmar will cost 20m and wanting 3m a season. he could turn out to be a super striker but ive watched enough brazilian shite this season to last me a lifetime. no more southern americans.
plus donadoni thinks the defence is alright as it is. i have no faith in him whatsoever. my biggest problem with donadoni is he has no ambition and is definitely not going to get this club challenging the top 4. didnt want him in the 1st place and i certainly dont want his soft approach now. a team like napoli needs a hard nose manager that will have his players sacrificing life and limb just to please their boss

Alex, could you get us a link with the DeLa quote about Acquafresca?
Posted from

cant find his exact quote, its from a few days back, but it was just a sentence something like de la asked if freshwater was ready to take critiscism or something.
but now there are various other people involved who have said thats why napoli arent interested anymore. that and he isnt mature enough to lead the attack of a larger club. the genoa president thinks the same as well, that hes not ready hence the links to parma.if thats the case why does de la put so much faith in lavezzi (3 years older) and hamsik (the same age) with both of them proving they arent up to it? it seems to me de la says one thing then just does another. now there are links saying that napoli is close to signing a polish player called robert lewandowski whos only 20?
http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=34758
i dont know maybe im far to critical. it just seems he gives up on certain players at the firse signs of difficulty but then signs some shitty foreigner.
the whole cannavaro thing has just pissed me right off though regarding de la. he publicly insulted him! this team needed an experienced leader more than anything and there is literally no other player that would of been better than a neapolitan who had captained italy to a world cup final, won, and then was given the world player of the year award. all that for free and he would of taken a pay cut.
that situation and the players he felt the need to sign just shows me that he really doesnt understand what a team needs only so much blame can go on marino, ultimately its de la who has the last word regarding everything to do with the club.
thats my rant over!
