Catania Match Report & Other News
By: Neil | May 26th, 2009Catania 3 Napoli 1
This game meant something: yet another road loss. The game was destined for a 1-1 draw until Martinez went down in the Napoli box in the 88th minue giving Catania a penalty. The foul was committed by Santacroce, who stepped in front of Martinez from behind to claim possession of the ball just as Martinez went to shoot. As soon as Santacroce went by him – maybe there was contact – Martinez instantly fell to the ground. You can’t really determine the nature of the contact from looking at the TV highlights, but if it was a penalty it was definitely a soft one. Mascara buried the spot kick to give Catania the three points. The highlights are worth checking out, as Bogliacino and Falconieri both scored beautiful goals from distance, with Falconieri’s coming on the half-volley.
No Auriemma highlights this week:
Napoli didn’t play a terrible game or anything but it seems the last three weeks Napoli haven’t got the breaks. Two weeks ago Lecce got a soft penalty to get back in the game, last week Torino scored from their only two real chances, and this week there’s another soft penalty. This late in the season, with a league position lower than expected, it’s harder to regroup after key incidents go against you. The loss to Siena was the only recent game where Napoli played poorly and deserved to lose, so these last three weeks have been frustrating to watch.
It also looks like Lavezzi is going to be sold to Liverpool for a fee of around 22m euros. This move, if it goes through, will have been forced by Lavezzi and his agent. The club obviously wants to keep him, but the player is tired of being a celebrity in Napoli and wants more money. I hate to admit it, but if he’s not going to give his best effort in a Napoli jersey selling him is the best thing. There’s something wrong with the agent’s logic, though. He claims if Napoli turn down Liverpool’s money, it means the club has the finances to give Lavezzi a pay raise. Just because a club isn’t selling its best players doesn’t mean that it’s rich enough to increase wages. We all known DeLa has plenty of cash anyways, but the point is that Lavezzi and his agent are forcing the club to sell him to Liverpool or else Napoli will have an under motivated player on a long term contract.
Reports also indicate that Napoli will replace Lavezzi with the Brazilian striker Nilmar, who has also been linked with Palermo. The fee is rumoured to be around E16 million, which is a really, really big risk. It’s true Nilmar has a good scoring record in Brazil – he’s actually included in the Brazil squad for the Confederations Cup – but he struggled to earn a starting spot at Lyon during his first spell in a European league. It resembles the German Denis signing from last summer – both are younger players who have bagged a lot of goals in their domestic leagues and broken into their national teams, but both players had less than impressive spells in Europe before returning to South America. I’m confident that Nilmar is better than Denis, but from a business perspective it’s a similar risk: if Nilmar doesn’t live up to expectations, Napoli will have overpayed yet again for a South American striker who won’t be in demand very much.
If the team does sell Lavezzi, I’d rather see the club spend E15 million on three players. Get a good striker for E7 million, a left sided defender for E5 milllion, and a backup right defender for E3 million. I think that would strengthen the team much more than bringing in one really expensive signing who could be a flop. Rather than trying to undercover the next big star, Napoli should be concerned with creating a solid all around team that has both depth and a bit of star power. The model Napoli should follow is the one used by Genoa and Fiorentina. Both those teams have a core of important marquee players surrounded by an excellent cast of supporting players. Both those clubs seem to get their players for relatively cheap – obviously the better players are more expensive – but overall, Fiorentina and Genoa do a great job of bringing in the right player for the right role, and they don’t break the bank doing it. That’s the approach Napoli should try.

Spot on Neil! I for one really like Lavezzi and what he brings to the table, but if he is pushing for Liverpool[or is it just more money], sell him and re-invest the dough. But please, not on Nimrod! We can’t be in the taking big risks on South Americans game every year.
Take the money and bring in Quagliarella, Cigarini, and Boriello or some combination of them And while we are at it, sell Hamsik’s sorry ass too!
Having Boriello and Quags upfront would ne SWEEEET!
I do think we need to go for players to fit in a 442 or 433.
Well, let’s just finish at the San Paolo with a win and a good send off from the fans. Get their heads out of their backsides and cheer the team, for f@cks sake!

I couldnt agree more with you Neil and Vincent!
We must change the formation to achieve better next season and that is why the club should invest in players who are suitable for a 4-4-2 or 4-4-3. Playing 3-5-2 will need two world-class wing-backs, which we dont have and neither will be able to buy. I dont hate the 3-5-2 system at all, Im just saying if we had played a different system this year as well as last year we would have collected more points, because fewer goals would have been scored against us. Its just putting too much pressure on our 3-man defence during every game where we dont have the ball for long periods of time. Maggio is the best wing-back we have and he can play all positions on the right thats why he is so important. We really need his excellent crossing abilities and his pace. Im really excited about seeing him again next season. Maggio is also a good example of a decent signing – the club needs to follow that path again this summer. Quality both on the field as well as on the bench, its essential if you want to qualify for the european competitions. If Lavezzi is having low morale because of anything, I really hope it can be solved. If the pressure from the supporters demotivates him, thats just how it is in the city of Naples when youre the star.
It takes a special personality to grow under these circumstances. If he wants an increase of his wage, then I actually believe the club should grant him a raise, because that is how important he are. With that being said I only want the club to get him a raise if he then commits himself 100%. Can we have a guarantee for a 100% commitment, no, can we risk loosing him if the club wants to progress towards the european spots, no.
If he only wants to join a Champions League-club, then we must let him go, although he is by far our most valuable offensive player. We all seem to forget that we already have a star-attacker playing for Siena. Emanuele Calaio still has the potential of becoming a decent goalscorer for SSC, if he is allowed to play more than the occasional 8-10 minutes, he did under Reja.
I´ve seen several games with Siena this season, also to keep an eye on Zuniga, their right back/wing-back and Galloppa who is one of my favourite young players in the Serie A. Emanuele has played very well this spring, not only scoring some goals but also contributing with many won duels in the air and intelligent play when setting up attacks. He is by far the most dangerous SSC-player on headers since Careca. I would love to have him back to improve the over all quality of our attack. I really think both Cigarini and Russotto should be bought right away, because those two players have already so much quality that theyre likely to become internatiol stars in the future. Those two could be part of our first Champions League-adventure. Lets see what happens on the market the next few days. A nice day to all!Posted from

thats quags dad
http://www.tuttonapoli.net/?action=read&idnotizia=34771
and thats his mam!
what an absolute treat that would be to see fabio in his hometown colours. he scores a good amount of goals and i cant remember a player who scores so many amazing goals

im sorry i would take him over lavezzi in a heartbeat. i really do think along with hamsik they have been blown out of proportion and now with all this contract talk they think they are worth more than they are. lavezzi is just to greedy on the ball. i would only be happy selling lavezzi and hamsik for good money though. if we can offload hamsik to juve then there are a few players that could seriously help our cause more then marek can.
their attitudes have been shit recently on one hand you have russotto saying he is honoured to play for napoli and wants to stay for a long time, then you have lavezzi just wanting more money even though hes been awful for the last half season.a team cant just revolve around 2 players. you need quality all over the pitch and a good balance.
in a couple of seasons i would love to see a front 3 combo of russotto-borriello-quagliarella, with cigarini just pinging chip through balls into the box for them.
the most important thing is napoli needs players who will join for the long term and will take this team to the next level

really good article about the entire youth sector. im really lookng forward to seeing some of these promising youngsters in the years to come. like i have said before, de laurentiis needs to invest heavily in the primavera as it isnt like signing a player, as in taking risks, but growing your own local talent which is so much more rewarding

Jon, I agree with you about Calaio`. Floro Flores seems to be doing ok away from Napoli, too. I suppose once Lavezzi and Hamsik leave they’ll start to shine.

If you look at it realistically, Calaio might not be world class, but he’s just as good [if not better] than Z-Donkey and Denis the Menace!

with reja gone i would really like to see calaio back at the san paolo. definitely better than z-donkey and probably denis.
i assume everyone will be watching the champions league final tonight? cant say ive been this excited to watch a game in my entire life between two teams i dont support. although having watched pretty much all the barca games this season i can say im wanting the catalans to win!
this has the potential to be one of the best games ever between two of the best squads ever assembledPosted from

Pellissier makes some interesting (or obvious) points here: http://itasportpress.it/index.php?action=read&idnotizia=7521

I think both Barca and Man U will be very cautious defensively… could be a lower scoring game than ppl are expecting.
Barca wasn’t very convincing at Stamford Bridge, and with Dani Alves and Abidal out I think they’re slightly weakened. That should be enough of an advantage for Man U to capitalize.

No Italian teams= Don’t care

well barca dominated man utd completely! this current barca team has to go down as one of the best in history. if not the best. absolute magic all season. vincent how can you not appreciate all football? especially lionel messi=maradona reincarnate?
pellissiers comments make sense but also hes being a little bitch. even ibrahimovic gets booed by his own fans thats just football isnt it. c.ronaldo just got booed for collecting a runners up medal its how you deal with it thats important

Alex, that was far from complete domination. You tend to stretch things out of proportion. Barca was dominant at times and played stylish football, but they simply outplayed Man U and won by a clear margin.
But I agree Barca is one of the best sides I’ve ever seen. To win decisively against a great Man U team (not very good on the day though) is something special.

man utd were poor, but its barcelona who made them look ordinary.
apart from the first 10 minutes, man utd were dominated, in my eyes thats a team being dominated for pretty much the entire match. if thats not close enough to completely dominating a team then i dont know what is. lighten up a bit matePosted from

Sorry, I’m not trying to pick on you. I’m just not sure what you mean by complete domination. The stats show Barca had 53% possession and had 7 shots on net compared to 2 for Man U. Until about the 89th minute, Man U still had a chance to draw even.

I had to work so missed the game. I am just more interested in the CL when Italian teams are playing. Sorry. Am glad that Man United lost though, as I despise the EPL.
Now on to the Nuggets vs. lakers

for a team to control man utd in a champions league final for 80 minutes, for me is completely dominating them. lets be fair after the 1st goal man utd had nothing at all. apart from a couple of c.ronaldo shots all game they were just toothless due to barcas passing game.
everytime a barca player ran at utd i thought they were going to lose the ball but their players are that good they just ghost past you. its been a privilege to watch them this season, what guardiola has achieved is astounding.
bit of bad news apparently atalanta are being awkward and not wanting to sell cigarini. they are a selling club so hopefully a deal can be reached as he is too good to play there

i would be amazed if de la spent that much on one player. makes you wonder though if hes planning on selling lavezzi or hamsik? hopefully hamsik

not sure how i feel about this one. on one hand lavezzi could of become even more idolised, but on the other hes clearly not happy. the fact his agent is pressing for a contract which he doesnt deserve is quite annoying as well. if selling lavezzi means quagliarella joining, i say good luck in liverpool el pocho.
quags and his whole family are dying for him to wear azzurri, a true neapolitan who used to go to the san paolo with his father. if there is any truth to that article i would be very happy with dossena as well, a back 4 of maggio, santacroce, cannavaro, dossena could be very interesting…

Hi, everyone!
I truly believe that this years market-strategy from Mr. De Laurentiis and Mr. Marino is to sign 3-4 big names. The strategy is designed to avoid that our best players wanting to leave for clubs participating in european competitions. If the club buys Quagliarella, Cigarini(still a possibility despite Atalanta not co-operating at the moment), Grosso, Pasqual or Dossena for our left back, then I think all of SSC´s current players will see that something positive will happen in the coming seasons. Furthermore it will have a huge effect on the supporters, which again could make San Paolo a strong fortress that wins us many points because of the extraordinary support from the most passionate fans in the world. If Lavezzi wants to leave despite all the above happening, then sell him. I would be really sad and angry but NO-ONE is above our beloved club. I hear that once again the club is interested in signing two keepers – Marchetti(Cagliari) and Cassano(Piacenza). Earlier this season Marchetti was linked to AC Milan but as I´ve mentioned earlier I dont think thats the position where we need quality. Maybe we can buy Cassano as backup but Marchetti wants a first-team spot. I just hope were holding on to Navarro and his potential, as I really would like to see how he would perform next season with a competent defense in front of him.
If the club had a different wage-structure a player like Trezeguet should have been the main-target for the attack, with Lavezzi and Quagliarella as the two other players in a 3-man-offensive. A trio like that would score about 35-40 goals during a season. We are all excited to hear some positive news on Quagliarella´s transfer. I really hope he will move to Naples, because having passionate players proud of wearing the clubs jersey is what it takes to build up something great. Positively it could also mean that Lavezzi would feel less pressure from the supporters, which would give him the needed personal space to improve his attitudes and his game. Let the arrival of 3-4 big players begin!Posted from

very, very disappointing. see a sensible sporting director would realise he is only 20 and would buy him on co-ownership then loan him out for next season. genoa have got to the position they are in through loans and co-ownerships.
marino needs to take note and de laurentiis needs to invest in the youth academies apparently man utd are after a youngster called marciano i think whos been likened to giovinco. so many young talents that napoli must keep hold of for the future
