Are we really 2nd best in Serie A ?

By: Neil | September 29th, 2008

In a word, no. But I’d like to remind Serie A fans of an English soccer saying, “The table never lies.” Only Lazio has started better than us, and we’ve played quality teams like Roma, Fiorentina, Udinese, and Palermo in the first five games. Yet Jose Mourinho admitted that he is not afraid of teams like Lazio, Napoli, and Catania – he is confident because Inter is still ahead of teams like Juve, Milan, and Roma.

Mourinho does have a point. I watched the Milan derby last night, and from a neutral perspective it was even better than a Champions League game. Both teams showed the kind of skill and tenacity it takes to compete for the Scudetto. Napoli has shown lots of heart, but the richest teams in Serie A all have thoroughbreads at every position. After watching our reserves struggle against Bologna, I’m worried our depth will be a factor, especially if we go on a big UEFA Cup run.

Right now our squad is in good shape to qualify directly for the Europa League next year. However, if we can sustain a Champions League spot until January, De Laurentiis might choose to spend big in order to improve the team. There are always rumours linking us with South Americans – the latest two names were River Plate midfielder Diego Buonanotte and 17 year old Uruguayan striker Abel Hernandez. Napoli has also been linked with unsettled Real Madrid midfielder Royston Drenthe. This kind of speculation is fun to read but the rumours rarely become reality.

It is more likely Napoli will sign a player like Siena’s Daniele Galloppa. Although foreign players can turn out great – see Lavezzi and Gargano – foreigners are a higher risk proposition. If for whatever reason they don’t work out, you can be stuck with a non EU player whose high wages might be a turn off for other teams. If Italians are a bust, it’s an easier problem to solve.

On the injury front, Lavezzi is healing faster than expected and will likely play some part in Thursday’s epic showdown with Benfica. Iezzo’s broken nose will keep him out of the lineup a bit longer, while Bogliacino is still recovering from a broken ankle.

Finally, much respect to Luigi Vitale, who is now being scouted by Pierluigi Casiraghi for the U-21 Azzurri. I have watched Vitale a lot and you can see him growing into a solid two way player. He’s still young so he’ll continue making some mistakes, but his goal in the first leg against Benfica proved he could be a big game player. The Castellamare di Stabia native has won the starter’s job from Daniele Mannini, and should keep developing.

I’ll be back later with a preview of Napoli’s 2nd leg UEFA Cup showdown in Lisbon.

I like Napoli, and it’s good to have a blog based purely on them. If they can hold onto players like Hamsik and then they are definitely going places. 5 years and they could be up there fighting for the Scudetto.

Nap have an unusually good record with signing foreign players. It’s not just enought to identify the right players, but the club needs to have a culture of supporting them. I think we have that and Marino is good at identifying who can handle the move to Serie A (hopefully Denis comes through). The Benfica and Genoa matchups will be very intriguing as I think we are capable of getting the desired results in both (tie in Lisbon and win in Genoa).

Once we are all healthy, it’ll be like getting a few midseason signings, but I still wish we had some more depth at the back.

Neil – don’t discredit yourselves. Napoli are a formidable team who can cause fits for ANY team in Serie A (or the UEFA Cup for that matter). A top four finish is definitely not out of the question this season.

If my boys Palermo had more stable management, we’d be in the same type of situation right about now (although, our’s is not at all bad regardless)

They need to build points now as the season is a long one and the bench rather thin in terms of quality players. I suspect the second half of the season will be a tense one.

If Napoli could grab Pazzini or Osvaldo to give depth up front, and one more solid mid, could push for a CL spot this year.

    Great comments everyone.

Lorenzo, I’m not discrediting Napoli. In fact, I’m very proud of our accomplishments so far. But as Maurizio pointed out, the season is long. Last year we started with 10 points from the first 5 games, and we ended up in 8th. This year we have 11 points from 5, and it’ll be impossible to get our starting eleven out for every Serie A game. Injuries, suspensions, and cup games will test Reja’s ability to use the bench. I think it’s an area he can improve on.

Also, to reach the Champions League, we need one of the bigger clubs to have an off year – last year it was Milan, it could be Roma this year.

Last weekend Benfica defeated Champions League side Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in a derby match in front of 60 000 fans at the Esadio da Luz. Thursday will be Napoli’s biggest game since the club was resurrected.

today Napoli fans we found out are coppa italia team that we will be facing. It is none other than are most hated rivals salernitana! These two cities are so close together you could spit from one to the other. It is where the amafi coast starts and finishes. I love Napoli with all my Heart but salerno is where my family came from and still lives today. So I must say forza granata! Anyways you think Napoli fans got out of control in Rome. No sir. You have seen nothing. This is a derby match that gets no respect because when they play it is usually in the lower leagues. Can’t wait! My first Italian calcio match I attended. Holy shit I thought I was going to die. In the top three things I ever did in my 25 years on this earth.
