‘A Serenata ‘E Pulecinella news

  • Uruguayan striker Marcelo Zalayeta is set to make his return to Napoli in next week’s Birra Moretti. The preseason tournament, held at the San Paolo and this year featuring Juventus and AC Milan, will mark El Panteron’s first live action since he suffered a knee injury on March 9. My take: Zalayeta can be a useful player when he’s on and he is capable of some stunning matches. However, his inconsistency is maddening. He should be used as a logical sub for German Denis and coach Edy Reja is likely to bring him in off the bench in the Birra Moretti matches. All in all, he’s earned a place on the club but he shouldn’t sniff the starting XI when he regains full fitness.

  • Chievo Verona is looking at potentially sweeping up three Napoli players who are surplus to requirements at this stage. Left-winger/Left back Mirko Savini, central midfielder Samuele Dalla Bona and trequartista Roberto De Zerbi. Chievo would like to purchase Savini outright and figure out a loan deal for De Zerbi and Dalla Bona. Currently, the sides are two million euros apart. My take: The fact that Dalla Bona has rotted on our bench the last two years is one of the biggest indictments I have against Reja. He’s been pushed out by Michele Pazienza and Francesco Montervino. Put together they don’t have the skills of Dalla Bona who has hardly played since he signed a big contract with Napoli three seasons ago. The Andrea Russotto signing made De Zerbi expendable and it’s unlikely he’ll ever make a meaningful contribution. Savini? Meh. At his best he’s an average defender and provides little to the attack. At his worst? He’s slow, has trouble crossing the ball and is often out of position. Ciao, Mirko!
  • Direttore Generale Pier Paolo Marino confirmed Inacio Pià’s place with Napoli. Marino calls PiĂ  a “player who we lost and now found again” and credits the Brazilian’s hard work and Reja for helping him rediscover his touch. My take: PiĂ  must have gotten sick of being on the bench with smaller clubs in previous loan deals. Somewhere along the line, the kid matured and realized being on the bench of an up-and-coming Serie A team playing in Europe is better than playing scrub minutes for Triestina and Rimini (no offense). In Reja’s big-and-small two forward attack, PiĂ  would likely sub in for Ezequiel Lavezzi.
  • The article referenced above also states Napoli’s market is closed unless/until some players get sold. Marino indicated he’d like to perhaps pick up a youngster to fill out the roster but nothing more. My take: I hope Marino is blowing smoke here. There isn’t a chance a hell Maurizio Domizzi is staying and I don’t see more than one player out of Savini, Dalla Bona and De Zerbi staying with the club. Competing in three different competitions (Serie A, UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia) is going to take its toll on the squad’s depth. We’re still short on defenders and flush with midfielders. As good a game as Grava had covering for Leandro Rinaudo and Fabiano Santacroce against Panionios, you don’t want to rely on a winger to man the back line against Milan or Fiorentina, do you?
  • Other tidbits: Marek Hamsik (Slovakia) and German Denis (Argentina) are out on international duty. Walter Gargano (Uruguayan) had been called up but remained with Napoli after his injury. Gargano is training separately (along with Daniele Mannini and Matteo Contini) but should be ready for the start of the Serie A campaign.
Russotto starts training with Napoli today.
  • Tomasz Jodlowiec’s Polish club (Warsaw) has asked Napoli to hold off on their purchase bid one more week for the defender. The 1.9meter (6’3”) 23-year old defender has been all but signed by Marino for 1.3 million euros to a five-year c

zalayeta seems to get lost when he plays. Most of his goals last year were not that good. They were off rebounds or the goalie made a mistake. Some of them were good but but I think he needs to go. We could get some good cash for him. Some well needed cash if Fabio is coming over next year. Is Zalayeta on loan? I am not sure but didn’t he come from juve?

I think, and can’t confirm, that we purchased the other half of Zala’s contract from Juventus along with Blasi. Reja loves him so as much as I don’t think he’s the answer, I doubt he’s going anywhere. At the very least, Denis’s presence means Zala isn’t going to get starter minutes.

I did read that we have Zalayeta fully. I like him as a sub and in case of an injury. We need at least 1 more strong defender. I dont know anything about the polish defender we may be getting, except that hes big. Joe and Joe C do you know bout him, is he a big time defender.

goal.com. Has been speaking highly about the Pol. But I have not seen any video on him yet. I am sure Joe G can tell you much more about him than I could. He is huge in Poland but that is not saying much. There team at the euros did not look that good. They did have a hard group though. Joe G, Joe C, Joe A! I’m sure we are confusing the hell out of everyone.

Joe, not quite. Blasi’s other half was bought by Napoli this summer for an undisclosed amount, reports say for about 4-5million euros. Zalayeta’s co-ownership was just extended. I guess Napoli didn’t want to buy him outright and Juve thinks he might gain in value.

Apparently Zalayeta never complains in the dressing room, and I think that’s why he’s popular with Reja. It’s good to have that kind of player as a sub. But when he was a full time starter last year he didn’t show the consistency you’d expect from a top Serie A striker. He should be OK to start once in a while to give Denis a rest.

Just put $100 on Napoli to make the top four this season. Here’s hoping they don’t let me down.

Whenever I see Zalayeta play (which isn’t much, due to Australia’s crappy coverage of Serie A) he seems to give it all for the club. There’s better players out there, but as Neil said, he’s great off the bench, and he adds some depth.

Hey Jake, I dont think Napoli will make the Top 4 this year maybe in two years time. I think they can definetly get a top 6 spot but while having a talented team, they are not experienced enough like Roma, Juve, Milan and Inter to get a top 4 spot. They should look for a good run in Europe and a top 6 spot. Also a good example Napoli should follow are Sevilla, who were promoted back to La Liga in 2000 spent a few years in the Uefa Cup before winning it in 2006 and 2007 and then qualifying for the Champions League last year. Napoli need European experience first and the Uefa Cup is a good start.

Maybe it was just my love for Lavezzi (being a big Argie fan) that convinced me to do it. Still, heres hoping! I think in the next couple of years they can become a top level team, if the right decisions are made. Like you said, the UEFA Cup is a great place to start.

Here’s goal.com’s season preview for Napoli:

      http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=832278

It’s not the best preview but it’s neutral and doesn’t show any apparent bias either for or against Napoli.

So does anyone know what the deal is with the Napoli games broadcast rights this year?

Are we actually going to be able to see the Napoli home games here in the states this season?

johonna, i hope so because last year was rediculous napoli was the only team which did not have their home games televized. we missed all the greatest games they played last year because we beat all the big teams in the league outside of roma at san paolo. that sucked. i don’t know who exactly was to blame for that but hopefully they have all their ducks in a row this season, cause that was bullshit.

THere’s no word on this at all (regarding home matches). De La was holding out for more money and that seemed to be the sticking point last year. SerieA.tv still is “under construction” which seems really fishy to me and the first match is being televised on FSC, but it’s a road match. I’ve scoured the Napoli boards and asked everyone I know for the answer to the question, but no one seems to know. To say it seems “odd” is an understatement of epic proportions.

We always have radio marte’s audio feed, when it doesn’t crap out two minutes into the match so that’s something, right? Guh.

Its a video feed showing them and the crowd as they announce the games. Its excellent for Napoli fans. The broadcaster goes crazy when Napoli scores

the text says “Rai International detiene i diritti per la trasmissione delle partite di campionato 2007/2008 di tutte le societĂ  di serie A, escluso il Napoli.

Joe i may be wrong with the Rai link. 2007/2008 i beleive means 2007 season, this year would be 2008/2009. Anyway i dont think home games will be on this year. We would have heard or read something by now. If im wrong on the link, sorry. But the link i sent to listen to the games is excellent and reliable.
