A Missed Opportunity
By: Neil | May 10th, 2009Lecce 1 Napoli 1
This game is a symbol of Donadoni’s time so far. Napoli was a little better than under Reja, but the team just couldn’t find that something extra and settled for a draw. I think the game was there for the taking in the first half. After Pia’s goal Lecce continued to leave all kinds of space at the back, but Napoli didn’t have a killer instinct and Lecce got back in the game with one of those handball penalites that I don’t like being called. A draw was a fair result, as I don’t think either team deserved to win, but in the last fifteen minutes Lecce gave it all they had and put Napoli under a lot of pressure.
The way Lecce played in the last fifteen minutes was how I was expecting them to play all game, but they only found that extra motivation as time was coming to a stop. I’m really hoping they’ll stay up, but based on this game I don’t think they’re going to do it. Their defence was terrible in the first half, and you just can’t defend like that and expect to stay in Serie A. You could say Napoli was lucky that Lecce didn’t score at the end, but Lecce was very lucky Napoli didn’t put the game away well before that.
With the season coming to a close Don used an experimental lineup, notable for the absence of Hamsik and Santacroce:
Navarro
Cannavaro, Contini, Aronica
Bogliacino
Mannini, Pazienza, Datolo, Vitale
Denis, Pia
Last week the heart of our midfield – mostly Hamsik and Amodio – was missing and this week the midfield was much more solid. But I don’t like the idea of a skill player like Bogliacino in the role of holding midfielder. Some players like Pirlo and Xabi Alonso are great from that position, but they don’t do very much defending. Teams like Napoli that defend more than Milan or Liverpool should use a player like Gargano who can tackle and distribute short passes. Amodio is that type of player, but from watching him the last two weeks I don’t think he’s very good. Having a “deep lying playmaker” like Pirlo only works if the playmaker is really good and others around him do the defending.
Next topic: the penalty decision. When a player’s hand makes contact with the ball, it’s sometimes very difficult to determine whether its hand to ball or ball to hand. The play that got Lecce a penalty was clearly ball to hand, and for me there should have been no penalty. On the other side of the argument, it could be argued that if ball to hand prevents a scoring chance, a penalty should be given. I think in these circumstances, a penalty should only be given when it’s a crystal clear, high quality scoring chance. A good example of this was in the Champions League semi final between Chelsea and Barcelona. The Pique handball was ball to hand, but it prevented a great scoring chance and for me it was a penalty. I would not call the Lecce shot that hit Mannini’s arm a great scoring chance. If it hadn’t hit Mannini’s arm there was still a crowd of players plus Navarro before the shot would have reached the goal, if it was even on net. However, it’s very easy for me to analyze the play after watching the slow motion replay several times. On the field, in the heat of the battle, you have to give the ref some grace.
Here are the highlights:
I don’t have much else to say about this game. I was planning on doing a report card, but because of some distant camera shots and a slightly fuzzy picture I couldn’t alway tell who was doing what. When I first started this blog I usually gave a link with le pagelle but for some reason I stopped that. Here are this week’s pagelle and I promise I’ll include the link every week even if I do my own report card.
Only three games left in the season: Torino (H), Catania (A) and Chievo (H). The homes games look very interesting as both Torino and Chievo could be playing for three points to stay in Serie A. Torino are currently safe, just one point ahead of Bologna, so they might play for a draw. But Chievo will probably need a win on the last day of the season to stay up.
I’m going to do the usual midweek update, but it could be a quiet week and it might be a quick update. If I get some time, I’m also planning on doing a general blog about Serie A, the Champions League, and whatever else comes to mind.

if hes as good as people make him out to be and he leaves on a free to man city im going to be seriously pissed. italians keep moaning about losing youth players but what do they seriously expect when they dont show any sort of trust in a youngsters abilities?! russotto is a prime example.
even when other teams poach players like macheda, rossi and petrucci what does the italian government do to change the law? nothing. the clubs do nothing as well. the fact that giovinco doesnt even play no wonder these young players want to go elsewhere.
after all the exciting names that were linked with napoli looks like another average mercato is on the horizon…

This kind of crap also pisses me off royally. If Italian clubs would show more faith in the youngsters maybe they would want not look at the overseas offers as deeply. Plus, this legal loophole is stupid as well. You can’t have restricitons on stranieri, BUT you can have different laws on contracts in different coulntries. The EU is a piece of shIt that picks and chooses it’s legal renderings based on it’s bureucrats best interests and how much they can get under the table.
End of rant

As for the game, like my prediction 1-1. We can’t put anyone under consistent pressure since we have no forward that can actually score goals.
Denis and Hamsik when he came in were just f’n SHITE!

well boro are pretty much relegated so i hope for my football next season de laurentiis is going to sort this team out and they can bring me some footballing pleasure!

Denis is just BAD. What a horrible investment. I’m not sure if this guy played against the school of the blind in Brazil because I have no idea how he scored so many goals. I mean Pia is a better striker and he doesn’t even play. As far as the handball…if Lecce was playing Inter, Milan or Juve, I guarantee the ref doesn’t call it. Napoli is just not cathing any brakes. As far as the youngsters not playing shame on Napoli. I would think that if they started playing youngsters, you would get more players possibly wanting to come to napoli. Napoli has to be diff, than the rest of the clubs in terms of strategy. But what do I know.

Luigi you make a good point – Pia has looked more comfortable than Denis in the last few weeks. Maybe Pia wasn’t getting much time because he’s the same type of striker as Lavezzi.
I hate to say it, but I don’t think Denis is going to get much better. There was a great shot of Marino looking frustrated after Denis missed a good chance, and it perfectly summed up the situation.

marino is a fool. he gets offered floccari for 5m but chooses denis for 8m. seeing as though de laurentiis has spent so much on so many shit players i dont know why he hasnt sacked marino.

so marino is negotiating for zuniga apparently. why the fuck does he want zuniga when napoli needs a left back?!!!! hes utterly clueless. where does this leave maggio? i have lost all faith in marino and de laurentiis for still employing the man.

Well I read on channel 4 italia that De Sanctis is being courted by Donadoni. I think that is a great move to try and secure a solid number 1. I truly believe that ever since Iezzo went down, so did Napoli.

very good point luigi. iezzo has been amazing the last few seasons. i find it annoying though when de laurentiis says f.cannavaro is to old but then shows interest in de sanctis, di vaio and crespo

Yeah, that is lame. Denis was in Italy before and sucked, so what does Marino do, pay big money for him and bring him back. Idiot!
I hope we have a sound strategy to go forward and don’t trot out the “Italians don’t want to come to Napoli” excuse.
Some of them won’t come until we get into the CL sad to say. Bit plenty of the younger ones’ will if we show some faith in youth

not much fact in that but i truly hope cigarini joins napoli. d’agostino would be slightly better as he is quality with set pieces, but cigarini is definitely no second choice.
there is no other player in the world i would rather join napoli. antonio is the type of player de laurentiis has to aim for if he wants this team to become a force in europe. cassano would become an absolute idol for napoli. maybe next season unless we offload lavezzi or hamsik and come up with 30m….
regarding the upcoming mercato apparently acquafresca is top of the list for napul so if marino pulled his finger out and signed bellusci from ascoli, cigarini and acquafresca i think luca and robert would be amazing signings and obviously bellusci is one for the future unless he pulls a kjaer and plays amazing.
also i really want to know what the situation with russotto is? focus on finding the next f.cannavaro and ciro ferrara as well the team needs a leader from naples

apparenly lavezzi wants 2.5m a year improved contract even though he signed an extension at the start of the season. he definitely hasnt earnt it but has the cheek to ask for more money.
if that is his attitude then i say sell him, get 25m and get some players who want to play for the shirt. try and sell him to juve so a couple of their players can be brought in. you never know giovinco could be on his way out…

should we be getting excited? even the intention of asking about availability is a positive signal from de laurentiis and marino

Motta for 10 mill PLUS Santacroce??? It really is the silly season huh.
If we give up on Santacroce for a usually injured Brazilian I will be royally pissed off!!!
