Napoli – some club from Turin

By: Joe | October 25th, 2007

I hate Juventus with a passion difficult to describe. Let me count the ways: they’ve had Frenchmen as talismanic leaders…not once but twice, Luciano Moggi, 27 scudetti, dubious, questionable, shameful refereeing decisions, the prison stripe jerseys, half of Italy claim to be fans but they can’t fill up the Stadio delle Alpi (what a shithole), Alessandro Moggi, the G-14 G-18, Zinédine Zidane, spending €57 million after a year their penalty in Serie B, getting their penalty reduced from the initial Serie C relegation from the calciopoli scandal, Pinturicchio, appealing the first calciopoli penalty and having it reduced to a Serie B relegation with a 30 point penalty, David Trezeguet, appealing the second calciopoli penalty and having it reduced to Serie B relegation with a 19 point penalty, Michel Platini, appealing their third calciopoli penalty and having it reduced to Serie B relegation with a 9 point penalty (I don’t seem to recall the same charity bestowed to Napoli a few short years ago), Pavel Nedved, getting preferential treatment at the start of the season and avoiding playing any big matches early in the campaign (the same benefit was given to Milan, Inter and Roma…funny the other promoted sides weren’t given the same treatment), Lilian Thuram, earning the first Serie B trophy ever awarded last year (coincidence?), Luciano Moggi’s unborn great-grandchildren, and ultimately, the cockiest, glory-hunting fans who could give Notre Dame fans a run for their money on the obnoxious-o-meter.

Juventus have started the campaign as if last year in Serie B never happened. The tinkerman, Claudio Ranieri, has the bianconeri playing perhaps the best calcio in Italia (all due to respect to the Argentine national squad up in Milan). Juve have only conceded one goal (a late pk to Adrian Mutu) in their last four matches and have already had matches this campaign where they’ve put up five (against Livorno) and four (against Reggina). I know, I know those two sides are sitting at the bottom of the table…on the other hand no one else has given them that big a spanking either.

Giorgio ChielliniJuventus matches at the San Paolo are always one of the best fixtures of the season. The match is sold out and it’ll take another monumental effort to break down the back line of Zdenek Grygera, Nicola Legrottaglie, Cristian Molinaro and the golden beak himself Giorgio Chiellini. Maybe Ranieri will lose his mind and give Jean Alain Boumsong and Jonathan Zebina on that backline. Don’t they need to rest up for Inter Milan?

Things get much easier though because after that backline, that’s combined to give up one goal in the last 270 minutes, Napoli just have to get it past Gigi Buffon. It’s not David-vs-Goliath, but it’s not exactly as if the sides are on equal footing either.

Two native Napoletanos are likely to see some playing time for Juve at the San Paolo. Midfielder Antonio Nocerino has been playing the role of the young Rino Gattuso for Juve and it’s only a matter of time before he starts playing meaningful matches for the Azzurri. Nocerino’s workrate is legendary and he’ll be motivated to get it done in his hometown. Striker Raffaele Palladino may also get some playing time as douchebag extraordinaire Pavel Nedved is sitting out the match due to his ejection last week against Genoa. Tinkerman is also getting a match ban for… I don’t know and I don’t care why he won’t be on the touchlilne come Saturday night.

Hugs and kisses, Juve fansProjected lineups:

Prison-stripe cheating scumbags: Gigi; Grygera, Legrottaglie,El Grande Naso, Molinaro; Salihamidzic, Zanetti, Nocerino; Del Piero; Trezeguet, Palladino

Napoli: Iezzo; Cupi, Cannavaro, Domizzi; Garics, Blasi, Gargano, Hamsik, Savini; Lavezzi, Zalayeta

Stats:

Goals scored: Napoli 14 (5th); Juve 17 (t-2nd) Goals conceded: Napoli 10 (t-8th); Juve 7 (t-2nd). Juventus are the second most fouled team in Serie A. Wouldn’t have anything to do Pavel “watch my flowing locks as I catapult in the air” Nedved and Vicenzo “I’m absolute crap for the Azzurri but Donadoni keeps calling me up” Iaquinta tripping all over themselves when they get anywhere within 30 yards of the opponents goal.

Additionally, Juve have allowed the second fewest shots on net and 3rd fewest overall shots. Napoli meanwhile had their seven game streak of “out-cornering” their opponents when Roma had 10 corners to Napoli’s four. I’m just making up my own stats because I follow Napoli’s statistics from match to match but don’t follow the league…because I have a life, too much to do, a lazy streak a mile wide.

Hopefully, there won’t be fan trouble at the match. Traveling Juve fans will be allowed in the stadium. Much as I despise the bianconeri, it’s time all Italians started behaving themselves with a little self-respect and keep the violence in check.

IERI… OGGI… DOMANI… SEMPRE JUVEMERDA!!!

That picture of Chiellini is so inaccurate it’s disgusting. His schnoz is at least twice that size.

Also, great to see someone who hates Notre Dame fans as much as I do. Though I tend to keep it to myself as my school is a complete embarrassment to Div-1 athletics.

I wouldn’t mind my girlfriend to be a Catania or Messina-fan, but as soon as she comes home wearing Juve-stuff…she’s out. I can’t imagine 10-year olds watching a Juve-match, and saying ‘wow, this team looks great, i’m becoming a gobbo’. Juventus is the perfect example of all that is wrong in this world.

Stop holding back, Joe, tell us how you really feel about Juve. *grins*
(But could you explain for those of us who have never followed college football what’s wrong with Notre Dame fans? I’m lost.)

it would be interesting to have a serious academic study on the psychological profile of Juve tifoso. After few drinks with Oxfords scholars we came to this simple conclusion:
He is obviously somebody with a serious inferiority complex and serious anxieties. The typical Juve tifoso needs constant reaffirmations and feels the need to always achieve something more than his mates from similar upbringing.
In adult stages of life those tendencies manifest in arrogant work and social practices which could potentially push the boundaries of legality and decency. Otherwise if the individual is not successful in channelling his anxieties in his career and social life he sadly ends up supporting Juve.

There’s an old joke (not a very funny one) that says:
Q: How can you pick out a Notre Dame graduate from a crowd?
A: You don’t. They’ll tell you within the first minute they meet you.
My father-in-law really instilled my hatred in Notre Dame. His brothers were all fans and watching them go at it was a site to see.

Let me paint with a very broad brush here (why stop now?)…Notre Dame fans have a well deserved reputation for being the most sanctimonious, self-aggrandizing, arrogant and holier-than-though in the U.S. Wow, the more I think of them, the more Juve fans really do remind me of ND.

Love the analytical profile, Karl. To me Juventus always been the most odious and disgusting squad (top to bottom) this side of Hellas Verona. It all started with Platini and then Zidane sealed it. I don’t even like to eat french fries…and I’m not really joking.

When it comes to Chicago area College Sports, I have to agree with Joe, except one thing. Northwestern. It doesn’t make sense to have an “Ivy League” school in the Midwest. I work down the street from Northwestern, and I swear to God, when Saturday afternoon comes along during this time of year, their fans put on a faux new-englander accent.

“So I thought to myself, if you’re going to buy the S600, why not just go for the Maybach?”
    “Too true, Trevor, too true…”

My friend is an assistant AD at Northwestern so I’ve been to a few games. There is an odd sense I get from some of the fans… I think it comes from spending more in one year on the tuition, room and board for one year at NU than I spent for almost all of my five year college career at a much less prestigious school. Somehow all that money means your shit doesn’t stink. Who knows? Double that feeling if they’re Greek (the fraternity/sorority kind). The only frat I was ever involved in was attending parties at a house across the street called Kappa Tappa Brew…great music, cold beer. Good times.

It’s hard to complain about Evanston though, (I know I’m waaay off topic now)the campus being as nice as it is, and with B’hai temple up the street, it adds up to a good chance of getting laid, after having dinner with a new chick.

If you want to talk abut poorly misjudged placements of institutions, try the genius who plunked SEC-powerhouse Vanderbilt in the middle of Hickville, USA. So I’d have to agree with Joe here and say that the level of pomposity and asshole-ness is directly proportional to the price of tuition.

Ok, what will you say now that the prison-stripes team lost a balanced match because the referee awarded Napoli two invented penalty kicks??????
Anyway, i want to compliment you because, even if you hate Juventus, you have been fair and honest in your comments on the blog. And i want to compliment your president too, because is not an everyday issue that a president apologyze after a match like this and asks for “moviola” to avoid that a wonderful match (and it was) is “falsato in maniera scandalosa”.
I’m a little sad anyway, because your president’s honesty will cost you much during the season (in Italy, you know, is always like that: if someone has the courage to speak the truth he will pay for that).
Bye. Un Gobbo (19 anni di abbonamento, serie B inclusa)

collective short memory…. yes one can argue the two penalties conceded were ‘invented’, yet other ones (at least one in the first half on Lavezzi) were much more convincing yet ignored by the referee.

oh.. and apparently Mazzola (not known to be a Napoli supporter) in expressing his view has stated that the second awarded penalty was spot on. Zalayeta had to jump or else would have ran over Buffon with possible injuries for both.
check also Chiellini (most overrated player in serie A?)on Lavezzi, first half.
