Napoli - Livorno match preview

By: Joe | September 24th, 2007

Livorno? You’ve got a friend in me.Rookie Livorno coach Fernardo Orsi brings his squad into San Paolo on Wednesday for the fifth match of the season. The mid week encounter will test both sides but especially be hard on Livorno who have just played Inter last Sunday and then will have to play an in-form Fiorentina after the Napoli encounter. Orsi served as an assistant for four years under Roberto Mancini first at Lazio and then traveling with Mancio to Inter Milan before striking out on his own. Livorno gave Orsi a shot last year after firing Daniele Arrigoni twice (a common occurrence last year in Serie A). The results have been less than stunning.

Orsi did manage to keep Livorno up last year as they were four points from the drop in a very tight and anxious relegation battle that went on until the season’s last day. The squad has stayed in the top flight for its fourth year now and they’ll be aiming to get a result at the San Paolo before they get too buried down in the table and struggle for survival. Livorno currently sit dead last in the table due to their -6 goal differential. They opened the campaign with successive blowout losses against Juventus and Palermo (not that there’s much shame in that) but rebounded to draw Genoa and last week drew with Inter Milan at the Stadio Armando Picchi. Despite their place in the table, Livorno has some quality (they played in last year’s UEFA Cup) and are capable of playing to the level of their competition.

Despite an active transfer market where Livorno picked up former Empoli hit man Francesco Tavano, forward Diego Tristan and Giuliano Giannichedda, they are struggling to replace their enigmatic captain and leader Cristiano Lucarelli. Who’s around to pay homage to Che Guevara and to provide a good old fashioned dual clenched fist goal celebration?

The side is not to be taken lightly and they are certainly capable of locking things tight in the back with their backline of Fabio Galante, Alessandro Grandoni, Dario Knezevic and Giovanni Pasquale along with Azzurri keeper Marco Amelia who is now playing again after getting his hand slapped by Livorno chairman Aldo Spinesi. Apparently, there were words exchanged regarding Amelia’s contract and interest from other clubs in Italy as well as English sides looking to purchase the Roman netminder. Livorno and Napoli played late last month in a 3rd round Coppa Italia thriller that went to penalty kicks after 2 full hours of play. The match was one when Livorno’s last two penalty kick takers missed the net completely on their attempts. Livorno has picked up 14 yellows in the season’s first four matches (Napoli has seven) so you know the squad isn’t afraid, or doesn’t know any better, than to fly in and take men out when they want to.

Meanwhile, there are injury and suspension concerns for the squadra partenopei. Napoli will again be without ‘San Genarro’ Iezzo who is nursing an injury. The Napoletano keeper may return for Sunday’s match against Genoa but Napoli will once again need to buckle down and maintain their excellent defensive form (2 goals allowed are tied with Roma for tops in Serie A) if they are to grab the full share of the points. Ezequiel Lavezzi is nursing a leg injury and was removed early from the Empoli match on Sunday. He didn’t train with the club but got some rest and massage on his sore wheel. Manuele Blasi becomes the first
suspension candidate for Napoli this year as he has earned a yellow in three consecutive matches. Doesn’t he know the resident red-ass of our squad is Maurizio Domizzi? In all fairness, Blasi has been a tremendous pickup as he’s teamed up well with Hamsik and Gargano in the midfield. The suspension could open the door for Mariano Bogliacino who has had little playing time this season after being so instrumental in last year’s Serie B promotion battle.

Napoli are undefeated in their last six Wednesday matches dating back to 1980. Plus it’s Prince spaghetti day. How can we lose?

Festivities kick off at 8:30pm local time. There were rumblings that Radio Marte may not stream the audio broadcasts any longer though I’ve been unable to find anything official on the topic. Fans abroad may have content themselves with sitting in a chat room or message board and hitting the “refresh” key every 30 seconds during the match. A fan’s work is never done.

Forza Napoli!

Update: Reja just announced his callups. Gianello, Del Giudice, Contini, Garics, Maldonado, Rullo, Domizzi, Cannavaro, Savini, Blasi, Bogliacino, Hamsik, Gargano, Montervino, Calaio, De Zerbi, Sosa & Zalayeta.

So a few things to take from this:

1) Since Blasi is on the squad it means my sources were wrong and Karl was right (sorry I doubted you, mate) and a player is not suspended after three yellows as Napoli2000.com reported.

2) Gianluca Grava being out means someone else will wear the captain’s armband. Also Andrea Cupi is not on the roster which means either Maldonado or Contini (most likely Contini) will form the 3-man backline.

3) Ezequiel Lavezzi is not on the squad so either Reja is erring on the cautious side or his injury is worse than anticipated. I’ll go with the former since I don’t want to think of the other possibility.

4) If Samuele Dalla Bona, Fabio Gatti and Marco Capparella are not even going to get called up why didn’t we loan them out? There was definitely interest in Sam and in Gatti.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ll see Garics and/or Rullo on the sides from the start, Bogliacino (maybe in for Hamsik to give a breather) and Calaio’ in for Lavezzi who has a knock or two.
Who knows, there might even be room for Sam (Della Bona) and Cats (Gatti) at some stage in the match if it goes well. It would be nice.
Remember Sam’s 30 meters left foot rocket against treviso last year? I still cry when I see it.. what a goal!

That was the goal of the season last year for Napoli last season. It saddens me that the guys you mentioned, Karl, haven’t even made the bench for the last few matches (Garics, Rullo, Dalla Bona and Gatti).

I think Garics and Rullo are part of the future of the team. Garics was the Austrian U-21 captain so he’s no slouch and should, in my opinion, be either at right back if we go with a 4-man back line or should be starting in place of Grava. Once again, though, Reja has gotten himself into a trick bag. Last year he made Sosa and Montervino captains for a long stretch when neither of them were 90 minute players (and in Montervino’s case, he’s not even a good bench option).

I’ve read reports that Lavezzi will almost surely not play at all against Livorno and hopefully that’ll give Calaio the opportunity he’s been waiting for. I really hate this midweek matches. It interrupts the flow of the week for me but if it means three points I can live with it.

I think we’ll see them all at some point during the season. It must be tough for rullo and grava at the moment but I am sure they are aware that they are the future as you say.
talking about tactics, I don’t think the 4 in-line is an option at this stage. Many friends in Napoli don’t seem to like the 3 central defenders and 2 wing-back option but I am a big fan (if of course the 3 CD are good and the 2 WB have big lungs).
anyway, it will be a tough match. Livorno need to score points and will be on a high after the Inter match.
BTW: Inter and Milan are both playing some of the worst seria A football (or ’soccer’ for you?) I have seen in years. That’s funny seeing how much their squads costs… :)

Inter made Livorno look so good it was scary, but I’m guessing they’re a whole lot closer to the dismal squad we saw against Juve than the team that should have beaten Inter; should be three points for you guys.

check out the update on the roster i made to the post. some interesting roster selections by Reja. The old man is as unpredictable as ever. And Karl, I never, ever, ever call it “soccer.” It’s always football or calcio…something that gets me strange looks when I coach the nine-year old boys on my team.

Any comments about the change of referees?? I think Livorno should be fined for announcing the referee before the draw was made official. When things like this happen, it puts a black mark on all of Serie A

I can not stand Livorno. I want to see them get relegated this season. Hope Napoli win. That is second week running but this time I have a legitimate reason for wanting Napoli to win.

The story for those who might not know is that by FIGC laws, a referee is named 48 hours before a match. However, Livorno’s official website announced the ref for Wednesday’s match on Sunday evening (correct me if my timing is off). Collina just went off about this and changed the ref again and it appears Livorno may be in for at least a hand slap here.

I’m not naive enough to think this signals some kind of watershed moment for referring in Italy but it is heartening how swiftly they acted and I guess Collina was just pissed. I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often to be honest. For some reason, I think the reaction would be the same if it was Milan or Juventus who did what Livorno did. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking…or maybe that’s because those clubs can’t be as stupid as those running the Livorno socialist football club.

Taib: I’ll accept your support. The enemy of your enemy is my friend. I like it.

ok, let me wear the devil’s advocate robe for a second: I really don’t think Livorno can be classified as a socialist football club. Mr. Spinelli (Mr. Spliffs!) never strikes as being a closet Das Kapital reader and keenly accepted a big stash of Euros for local-hero and self-proclaimed ‘friend of the working class’ Cristiano Lucarelli.
Yes, many livorno supporters have always been showing ‘lefties’ banners and flags but I don’t see it as a problem especially since they have never (to my knowledge) been involved in episodes of violence or vandalism (the same cannot be said for some neo-fascist Ultra’ group I’m afraid). Furthermore I have always seen Livorno as a small miracle (just like Empoli or Chievo and others), small teams that have managed to build something out of very little. Outcasts, just like Napoli amongst the big clubs/cities. Call me a romantic (or a even a socialistif you like) but I support those teams against the Juventus and Milan of this world every day! wouldn’t you?
