A friendly reminder of who’s really in charge

By: Joe | January 18th, 2008

If I have to do this myself, I’ll just call the other teams and see who’s available.Napoli President, Aurelio De Laurentis, showed once again why the tifosi love his passion and attitude. In an interview with Napoli Magazine, De Laurentis went off on his players, his DG Pier Paolo Marino (a General Manager of sorts for those familiar with American sports) and, most of all, on the head of coach Edy Reja.
Here’s the transcript of the discussion and my lame attempt at translating the text:

This is how you play a game when you don’t want to win. I wanted to stay in the Coppa Italia because it’s an avenue to European competition [the winner automatically qualifies for the EUFA Cup]. When a team plays at home you have dictate the play and not allow your opponents to do it. All the changes made were done only after the [Lazio] goal. I saw a pissed off and motivated Lazio side today, like we should have been. As Eduardo said [Reja] the test never ends. We are all in the same boat. At this point we’re looking at 38 points in Serie A [to avoid relegation]. At that point we can start seeing the two jewels of our youth system. If this performance was useful in tiring out Lazio for our Serie A match on Sunday then so be it. Lotito [Lazio President] is better than I am, because he asks questions of his [technical] staff. I asked Marino, but he said the team is built in June and on the market there aren’t any players better than our own. However I want two (ali?…is that wingers?), because I’m like the other Napoletani:  I want to win.

Better start getting on the phone, Mr. Marino. Mr. Reja, you may want to consider your retirement plans. I’m sure Francesco Montervino can recommend some nice Serie C2 side you both can help rescue.

I should’ve written about it, but this summer when they were haggling over Reja’s contract one of the sticking points is that Edy wanted a two year deal. Marino/De La stuck hard to the “one year, take it or leave it” offer. Sounds like the intent all along may have been just to make sure the old coot doesn’t get us relegated while we continue to build up the squad.

I love DeLaurentis… San Paolo rights or no, he’s such a character and it’s hard to beat his passion for the club.

Exactly. He’s the perfect owner, he always has a close watch on things, without being intrussive to the point that others can’t do their jobs. I think this year they may have been hopeful for a uefa spot, but really just wanted to build up their revenues so that they can responsibly grow the club in the coming years. I love that De La seems to have a long term plan, but still wants to compete immediately (hence why Reja should be worried).

    Here’s a link to a neutral blog about Napoli’s turmoil…

It’s funny how a lot of Serie A fans see Napoli as a mid table side and believe Reja is doing a good job… I think Reja deserves to finish out the year unless Napoli become in danger of being relegated

Fantastic site. As a Roma fan i worry that Napoli rediscover the magic of 86-87. If De Laurentis backs up his passion with his wallet then the big four will be looking over their shoulders once again. Until that comes Forza Roma!
