He ain’t no Jewish prophet, but…

Apparently Aurelio De Laurentis doesn’t like being jacked around. After weeks of back and forth negotiations with Reggina starlet Rolando Bianchi, Napoli quickly changed course and swooped in to sign young Argentinian Ezequiel Lavezzi and put an end to the drama with Bianchi. The 22-year old San Lorenzo striker signed a five year deal after Napoli paid the club a 6 million euro transfer fee.

Lavezzi ought to be quite the colorful character with Napoli next season. He’s known as “el loco/il pazzo” by many of his detractors and “el Pocho/il fulmine” by his admirers. Just combine them and call him crazed lightning. The striker has played the last three years at San Lorenzo and scored 25 goals in 84 matches. It’s not exactly the goal scoring rate that makes your jaw drop but many clubs were after his services. Lavezzi almost gave up calcio at 17 and was pursuing a career as an electrician before he decided to stick with his first love. Two years later he scored six goals in Apertura 2004 tournament for Estudiantes. The skills shown were enough to draw the attention of many suitors and Lavezzi was nearly signed by Genoa before their scandal brought them down from a successful return to Serie A to Serie C shame.

Lavezzi relies on his tremendous pace and ferocity to wreak havoc. He’s been compared to fellow Argentinian Carlitos Tevez for his desire and hunger. Given that he’s only about 5′8″ his speed and killer passes will be the key to unlocking defenses next year. He’s most comfortable playing as an off striker or as a trequartista off a pair of forwards. I think he’d be fantastic playing off of Calaio and providing a varied attack.

I just love De Laurentis. As if pulling Napoli out of the sewer wasn’t enough to cement his reputation, the guy takes no shit from anyone, is aggressive as hell and hasn’t shown himself to be the nutjob many calcio presidents are. It’s going to be a hell of a season.

    Great story joe.

I wasn’t enthused about this E. Lavezzi kid because of the lack of scoring and lack of knowing about him. But I’m starting to change my mind. I hope he can provide for Calaio this season and make Napoli look like the contenders that we know they are.

I like what De Laurentis is doing he wants younger players and it is better for other teams to think we are weaker but it would help if we found our diamond in the rough

I wasn’t thrilled about Lavezzi when I first heard about the signing because I simply don’t follow the Argentinian league. However, after reading a bit about him and reading what people on some message boards who follow the Arg. league had to say about him, I’m a little more enthusiastic. I would really like to see us sell off Bucchi because all he’s going to do is take time away from Pia and Lavezzi at this point.
